Chapter 22

Chapter 22

Eavesdropping in public was a psychological burden for Zhe, but not for Yu Lei.

He eavesdropped openly, and when the passing nurses and doctors tried to stop him, he skillfully pulled out his police officer ID, using his privilege to perfection. Even so, he didn't hear much. Tang Ruxin and the woman were both quiet, and the occasional laughter made him guess that the two were probably friends.

"Skills test", "eating walnuts", "vacation", "fat again"... The disjointed words made Yu Lei lose interest in eavesdropping, and he already knew who this person was.

He'd heard that voice before; it was a rare, smoky voice among women. It must be the girl who'd said she looked familiar the first time they met, Tong Jiayu. Tang Ruxin did have a personal relationship with her, but it had nothing to do with him, or the case.

Thinking of this, Yu Lei stuffed a braised egg into his mouth and turned to leave, but he caught a glimpse of two familiar figures from the corner of his eye. He subconsciously turned into the next ward and quickly closed the door.

Yu Zhe and Tang Jiulin approached from the elevator. Both men, dressed in suits and ties, walked with a leisurely gait, their every gesture revealing the demeanor of elites. Yu Lei wanted to talk to Tang Jiulin about the past more than Tang Ruxin did. Tang Jiulin was far more likely to know about Zhao Zheng than Tang Ruxin. However, with so many things happening, he hadn't found the right opportunity.

"Who are you looking for?"

Yu Lei turned around and saw a room full of people. Some were sitting or standing around the person on the bed, but at this moment, their eyes were all focused on him.

"Takeout." He answered casually with his mouth full of boiled egg, then turned around and continued to look through the crack in the door.

Everyone in the room started asking each other who had ordered takeout. By the time they confirmed that no one had ordered it, Yu Lei had already opened the door and left.

This time, the eavesdropping was much more effective. First, the door wasn't locked tightly, and second, Yu Zhe and Tang Jiulin's voices were much louder than those of the two women. Even listening to one side of the conversation, I could guess the general content.

The two first expressed concern for Tang Ruxin's condition, then asked Tong Jiayu to leave. It's unclear what Tang Ruxin said, but Tong Jiayu stayed. Yu Zhe and Tang Jiulin likely knew Tong Jiayu, so they didn't insist on clearing the area. Yu Zhe then unilaterally confronted Tang Ruxin, while Tang Jiulin remained silent.

Tang Jiulin's mere presence was a sign of his support for Zhe.

Yu Lei couldn't hear what Tang Ruxin said, he only heard Yu Zhe's voice getting louder and louder, almost a roar, and the roar ended with the crisp sound of a water cup hitting the ground and shattering.

"Shut up! Get out, get out!"

Tong Jiayu's hoarse roar followed, and she seemed to be pushing Yu Zhe. The room was filled with noises: chairs were knocked to the ground, Tang Ruxin's voice was trying to stop Tong Jiayu, Yu Zhe's voice was roaring, and Tong Jiayu's voice was repeatedly asking Yu Zhe's ancestors.

The noise seemed to be getting closer, so Yu Lei hid in the next ward again. Without waiting for anyone in the ward to speak, he threw out the word "takeout" and continued to pay attention to the movement of the door next to him.

The few people who came to visit him in the ward looked at him blankly, then turned around and continued chatting, as if he didn't exist.

I don’t know if it was because Tong Jiayu was particularly strong or Yu Zhe was too embarrassed to hit a woman, but she actually pushed Yu Zhe out of the ward.

"Crazy! Let go!" Yu Zhe pulled Tong Jiayu's hand that was grabbing his collar away and straightened his messed-up tie.

"The madman is a human being, but you are not even a fucking human being. If I see you bullying Tang Ruxin again, I will kill you!" Tong Jiayu said with gritted teeth, staring at Yu Zhe with murderous eyes.

Her hair was messy, the sleeve of her dress was torn, her original beret and sunglasses were gone, and one of her high heels was missing. She really looked like a "madwoman".

"Do you believe I will call the police right now?" Yu Zhe lowered his voice and said viciously, as if he didn't want to attract other people's attention.

Tong Jiayu raised her hands and pushed Yu Zhe hard. Not satisfied, she took off the remaining high heels and hit Yu Zhe on the head.

"Report it! If you don't, you're the one who's responsible for my shit!"

Several nurses heard the noise and immediately rushed over to stop Tong Jiayu.

"She is crazy, lock her up! Send her to a mental hospital!" Yu Zhe shouted while hiding.

One rushed forward to hit someone, and the other held his head and cursed. The doctors and nurses around them tried to stop them, and the scene became a mess.

Despite the commotion, Tang Ruxin and Tang Jiulin remained in the ward. It was natural for Tang Jiulin to be too lazy to deal with such matters, and Tang Ruxin also played dumb and didn't follow them out. The only explanation was that Tong Jiayu's madness was instigated by her. So, she had kept Tong Jiayu here to deal with Yu Zhe.

Yu Lei smiled unconsciously, and was very impressed by Director Green Tea's ability to plan ahead.

"What's going on? Who's fighting?"

Yu Lei was startled by the sudden sound right next to his ear. He turned around and saw four or five heads gathered around him. Everyone in the ward crowded over to watch the fun.

"Of course it is. It's very beautiful." Yu Lei followed the local customs and continued to peek through the crack of the door with an expression of a bystander.

Soon, hospital security rushed over. Seeing Tong Jiayu about to be taken away, Yu Lei pushed open the door and revealed his identity. After clearing the crowd, he took Tong Jiayu and Yu Zhe to the side to mediate the situation.

There was no need for unnecessary discussion among acquaintances, and there was no need for mediation. Yu Lei had kept the two of them in a circle to buy Tang Ruxin more time to talk privately with Tang Jiulin. He hadn't had security escort Tong Jiayu away to save Tang Ruxin the trouble of dealing with the aftermath.

Yu Lei was almost moved by his own thoughtfulness. He would definitely take credit for it when he found Zhao Zheng next time - seeing how much effort he put into that trivial matter.

Seeing Yu Lei ramble on and on, Yu Zhe lost his patience and headed back to the ward. Tong Jiayu, of course, wouldn't let him bother Tang Ruxin and raised her hand to tug at him by the back of his collar. Yu Lei, quick-witted, flung the iced tea bottle, spilling it all over Yu Zhe's back and Tong Jiayu's arm.

"Hey! I'm sorry, I'm sorry, my hands have been shaking lately. Excuse me, wipe them quickly." Yu Lei hurriedly used his hands to wipe Yu Zhe's high-end suit, and spread it evenly.

Seeing Yu Zhe's livid, speechless face, Tong Jiayu burst into laughter. She patted her sleeves and swung her arms in front of Yu Zhe, ostentatiously. Her light brown dress barely showed the color of black tea, while Yu Zhe wore a light gray suit, his back like a peony.

"Captain Yu, I hope to hear your explanation someday." Yu Zhe glanced at Yu Lei sinisterly, then turned and left.

"Eh? Let me explain this old problem of mine..." What explanation? Yu Lei muttered while taking a sip of iced black tea.

He watched Yu Zhe walk away, while Tong Jiayu kept looking up at him.

"I now believe that what you said before was true." Yu Lei unscrewed a bottle of black tea and handed it to Tong Jiayu.

She withdrew her gaze, took the drink, screwed the cap on, and didn't drink it.

"What?"

"We have met twice in total, and both times you kept staring at me. You said you had seen me before, so tell me, where did you meet me?" Yu Lei put the remaining drink bottle in his hand on the ground, squeezed some hand sanitizer on the railing beside him, and rubbed off the red tea on his hands.

"Didn't you say that handsome men look like this?" Tong Jiayu smiled and her tone became unconsciously gentle.

"I did look in the mirror, so I wasn't staring at you."

"Do you like Tang Ruxin?" Tong Jiayu asked.

Yu Lei was quiet for a moment, and fear gradually appeared on his face.

"What do I look like?"

Tong Jiayu hesitated and didn't nod. His actions today had definitely put him on Tang Ruxin's side, even if she probably didn't know it. But his expression at the moment made him look like he was ready to sacrifice himself heroically.

"Then let me ask directly, why did you help Tang Ruxin?"

"It has nothing to do with you." Yu Lei put away his pretended fear and took out his cell phone to check the time.

The two old people from the Chen family should have finished their visit. He picked up the three remaining bottles of drinks on the ground and turned to walk towards the stairs.

Tong Jiayu looked at his back, and a strange smile gradually appeared at the corner of her mouth.

After a moment she called out to him:

"Yu Lei, can I pursue you?"
