Chapter 35

Chapter 35

After sitting outdoors in the freezing cold for almost an hour, relying on the warmth of hot coffee, Tang Ruxin couldn't stand the cold anymore, so she packed up her snack bag and drinks and went back.

She had done her best by leaving the couple alone for an hour. Tang Ruxin angrily drank the last sip of her coffee and threw the cup into the trash can.

Arriving at Tong Jiayu's ward floor, as soon as I stepped out of the elevator, I saw two or three people gathered in front of the ward door in front of me, looking curiously into the long glass window on the door. It was Tong Jiayu's ward, and there seemed to be some movement inside.

Tang Ruxin walked forward doubtfully, pushed open the door and let the onlookers squeeze in. The scene in the ward made her gasp.

Yu Lei was half lying on the ground, with Tong Jiayu sitting on top of him, and the two were fighting. To be more precise, Tong Jiayu was attacking Yu Lei unilaterally like crazy, while Yu Lei was busy blocking her punches that kept hitting his head.

"Tong Jiayu!" Tang Ruxin threw down the drink and snack bag in her hand, rushed forward and pulled Tong Jiayu away, "What are you doing?!"

Tong Jiayu, whose arms were held by Tang Ruxin and who was forced to stop, still stretched out his intact leg unwillingly and kicked Yu Lei hard.

Tang Ruxin was so angry that her heart ached. She had only been away for a moment when such an outrageous commotion had occurred. Not wanting to disturb Tong Jiayu's casted leg, Tang Ruxin carefully carried her to a nearby seat on the ground. She lowered her head to examine her injury, confirming the cast was intact and not broken.

"Does your leg hurt? Do you want to call a doctor?"

Seeing Tong Jiayu's face livid and panting but she didn't answer, Tang Ruxin turned around and yelled at Yu Lei, "Don't you know she has a leg injury? Fighting with the injured, is this how you police officers serve the people?!"

Yu Lei was also furious, his heart aching. He was the one being beaten, the one being scolded. If he hadn't been concerned about Tong Jiayu's injuries, would he have let her hold him down and beat him without fighting back? He could have thrown her out the window with one arm.

"Come on, slow down." Tang Ruxin helped Tong Jiayu up and moved her to sit on the bed. "What happened?"

Tong Jiayu stared at Yu Lei with a cold gaze. After she calmed her breathing, her eyes turned red. Then she lowered her head and sobbed in grievance, pursing her lips and saying nothing.

"Did he bully you?" Tang Ruxin herself felt absurd as she spoke, but she couldn't imagine what could have irritated the cheerful Tong Jiayu so much. The last time she'd lost her temper was at Yu Zhe, and that was at her behest. In other words, she'd never seen Tong Jiayu truly lose her temper this much, to the point of hitting a police officer.

Yu Lei said nothing, his face gloomy, and no one knew what he was thinking. He held a ball of tissue in his hand and wiped the corner of his mouth that was broken.

"You two are having an affair." Tong Jiayu said with a heavy nasal voice, her voice was very low, but loud enough for the other two to hear.

Tang Ruxin, who was sitting on the edge of the bed, slowly turned her head and looked at Tong Jiayu, who was leaning against the head of the bed, with a dull look.

This world was truly fantastical. She had just spread the rumor that Yu Zhe had a concubine, and now the retribution had come upon her so quickly. No wonder Yu Lei remained silent even after being beaten like this. It seemed he had earned this beating through his own strength.

"He, said that?" Tang Ruxin asked in disbelief.

"You could have told me directly, why did you hide it from me?" Tong Jiayu sniffed, raised her finger and pointed at the lipstick mark under Yu Lei's collar, tears falling down her face, "I said I liked you first, but that doesn't mean I have to give in to you."

Tang Ruxin pursed her lips, understanding Yu Lei's speechless response. She didn't know how to explain it. The lipstick mark had been made in the car earlier. She'd seen it when she got out, but she didn't think it mattered. She hadn't even considered mentioning the wash to Yu Lei.

"If I have anything to do with him, I will be struck by lightning..."

Yu Lei covered Tang Ruxin's mouth with his hand, but his eyes were always on Tong Jiayu.

"That's not what you said just now." He bent down, approached Tang Ruxin's ear from behind, and whispered, "We slept in the same car for ten hours, and now you don't recognize me after I put my clothes on?"

Tong Jiayu slowly raised her head, the sadness on her face completely gone. The ruthlessness and viciousness that flashed across her eyes startled Yu Lei, sending a chill down his spine once again. It wasn't an illusion; that was the look Tong Jiayu had given him the moment she learned the lipstick mark belonged to Tang Ruxin.

Malice and murderous intent intertwined, a long-suppressed and precipitated rage that was enough to tear the flesh out of the person before him. Yu Lei had seen heinous criminals before him, but there weren't many who carried hatred etched deep into their bones like Tong Jiayu.

A resounding slap rang out, interrupting Yu Lei's musings and also breaking Tong Jiayu's gaze. It was a predictable development. Yu Lei stepped back and rubbed his face. He was already bruised from Tong Jiayu's blow anyway, so he didn't care about Tang Ruxin adding another slap.

Yu Lei poked the side of his face that had been hit with his tongue, then smiled at Tong Jiayu. He bent down to pick up the notebook and pen that had fallen on the ground, patted them on his clothes, and then pointed at Tong Jiayu with the notebook and said:

"Your work is not over yet."

After Yu Lei left, Tang Ruxin turned around and slapped Tong Jiayu in the face. Her force had diminished, and her voice became muffled and drawn-out.

"When did it start?"

Tong Jiayu was stunned and looked at Tang Ruxin in disbelief.

"When did you start acting in front of me?" Tang Ruxin asked word by word.

Tong Jiayu slowly withdrew her feigned surprise, pursed her lips, and lowered her head, her slightly round face breaking into a stubborn line. She looked away, her fingers digging into the quilt.

"You met with Yu Zhe in private without telling me, and lied to me that you liked Yu Lei. You insisted that the doctor put a cast on your leg even though it clearly didn't need one. Why?" Tang Ruxin asked softly, and held Tong Jiayu's hand, pried open her tense fingers, and rubbed them slowly.

"I know you must have... a reason for doing this." Tang Ruxin felt her nose gradually become sore, and a warmth welled up in her eyes. "Can't you tell me? Is it because I can't help, or... or is there some other reason that makes you so wary of me? Even to the point of slandering me?"

"No!" Tong Jiayu said hurriedly. She held Tang Ruxin's hand. "I'm not slandering you. I... I am, I am protecting you. Please believe me."

She frantically wiped Tang Ruxin's tears, her eyes full of helplessness.

"Don't cry."

However, Tang Ruxin's tears were like a river bursting its banks, and no matter how hard she tried to wipe them away, they wouldn't stop.

"Yu Zhe came to me and tried to bribe me to tell him about your movements. Then, he lied to you and said that I liked Yu Lei because, because I was afraid that he would have ideas about you... I don't like the way he looks at you, I hate him, I really hate him! And what else, oh, the legs, this leg is because, if it looks a little more serious, it will make you feel more distressed..."

As Tong Jiayu continued her explanation, Tang Ruxin's tears gradually stopped. Her gaze towards Tong Jiayu gradually turned colder, and a bitter smile slowly rose on her lips.

Sure enough, the things she cherishes never last long.

Tang Ruxin patted the back of Tong Jiayu's hand, saying goodbye reluctantly and silently, then stood up and walked towards the ward door.

"Ruxin!" Tong Jiayu shouted hurriedly, "Believe me. I will never, ever hurt you."

Tang Ruxin stopped, looked back at Tong Jiayu, and responded with a smile:

"good."
