Chapter 44
During the daytime on weekdays, the hardworking Song Mu is naturally not at home.
Tang Ruxin didn't call him because she didn't remember the number. She couldn't call the company dispatch again to ask. She had too much dignity to do something as foolish as asking for her assistant's phone number over and over again. She also didn't want anyone in the department to know that she had contacted Song Mu despite being suspended, which would cause unnecessary speculation.
The reason she remembered Song Mu's address was simply because he lived in the area named after him - Songmu Community, and the building number was the number of strokes in his name: Building 7, No. 8. When he first told her, Tang Ruxin even wondered if the developer of the community was his relative; it was such a coincidence.
Song Mu seemed to have been living with his retired parents, so if he was lucky, there should be someone at home.
Tang Ruxin rang the doorbell, but no one answered for a while. It looked like she was having a bad day. Just as she was about to leave, a sudden roar came from the door camera. The sound was so loud that Tang Ruxin jumped, taking two steps back and leaning against the wall.
"Mr. Tang! How could you... Never mind. Why can't I get through to your phone? Never mind. Password: 314279. You go in first. I'll be home soon!"
Song Mu's voice came out from the camera like a machine gun. Tang Ruxin couldn't get a word in. When she came to her senses, he had already hung up the call.
Tang Ruxin entered the code for the electronic lock and quietly opened the door, like a thief. She was worried that someone might be sleeping or using the restroom, and if they couldn't open the door, they might be frightened by her sudden appearance.
Song Mu's home was a very ordinary three-bedroom apartment. The living room was furnished with the usual trinity of old things: a sofa, a coffee table, and a television. The decor was retro, the elegant, mid-century style favored by the elderly. The sofa was piled high with cushions, the coffee table was covered with fruit and snacks, and a Go board and several potted plants sat on the TV stand.
It had been a long time since she had been in such a human-like house. It wasn't deliberately arranged neatly or spotlessly clean, but rather had a sense of casualness and comfort that made it easy to relax. Tang Ruxin didn't wander around, but sat on the sofa and waited quietly.
Song Mu rushed over from the company, taking at least half an hour.
During this half hour, Song Mu's parents, who had been out for a walk, returned home and were surprised to see a stranger suddenly appear in their home, thinking a thief had broken in. Tang Ruxin hurriedly explained that she was Song Mu's friend and had something to ask him, and that he had given her the door code.
Then the two old men looked at her differently. They pulled her aside and asked about her well-being, her age, her job, her family background, and her education. Tang Ruxin knew they had misunderstood, but when she was away from home, her status was her own. She was free anyway.
So Tang Ruxin said that she was divorced and had two children and was currently unemployed.
Just as the two old men looked at each other in confusion, the atmosphere was a little awkward, Song Mu came into the room with a computer bag on his back, sweating profusely. He said as he changed his shoes:
"Mr. Tang, I started calling you yesterday morning, and I made dozens of calls, but your phone was always turned off. What are you doing...Mom and Dad, you're home, why don't you open the door?"
Song Mu looked at his parents in surprise. The two old people's eyes moved back and forth between him and Tang Ruxin several times, and their expressions gradually became confused.
"Yu Lei took my phone away. He detained me at the police station all day yesterday and only released me this morning."
Tang Ruxin discovered that once people start talking nonsense, it is difficult to stop.
So Song Mu's expression became similar to that of his parents, but there was a hint of "Do you take me for a fool?" in his doubt.
Song Mu cleared his throat and said, "Let me introduce you. This is..."
"I know about Yu Zhe's matter. The company must be in chaos now. I guessed that you would look for me, so I immediately took the initiative to come to you. Look how self-conscious I am." Tang Ruxin interrupted him with a wink, stopping him from exposing her on the spot.
"Mom and Dad, could you please pour me a glass of water?" Song Mu didn't have time to act and led Tang Ruxin directly into the study. "The chairman is personally in charge of the work, so the company isn't in chaos."
Tang Ruxin nodded. "Only with Tang Jiulin personally in charge can the company survive this crisis. With provincial and ministerial-level supervision, the general manager was seriously injured in a car accident. If you say no one is messing with our company, no one will believe it."
"The Emergency Management Bureau has fully entered the company, and Ding Xinqiao is leading a review of all of the company's safety management systems and their implementation. They believe the root cause of the frequent accidents lies in the system. Even if someone did it intentionally, it was exploiting a management loophole, and the company still has to bear the responsibility."
"Engineer Ding must be blind. The company has so many rules and regulations." Tang Ruxin smiled. "They still need to be checked and implemented. How can he finish them in half a year?"
"It's done. The Emergency Bureau has over twenty people stationed there." Song Mu pulled out a chair behind his desk and sat down, opening his laptop. "I've learned that half of these twenty-something are interns. If there's a real problem, explaining it shouldn't be difficult, as long as Ding Xinqiao doesn't take it too seriously."
"You're in such a hurry to find me just for this? I've been suspended from my job. You don't want me to do public relations." Tang Ruxin spread her hands.
Song Mu shook his head and turned the laptop slightly to make it easier for Tang Ruxin, who was standing next to him, to see it.
"I wouldn't be unable to handle these alone. This is the problem." He swiped the spreadsheet on the screen with his mouse. "I've analyzed the data on accidents, incidents, and production fluctuations in our company over the past ten years."
Tang Ruxin immediately widened her eyes and looked at him with admiration.
"You are truly the best...employee I have ever met."
"You mean cattle and horses?" Song Mu met Tang Ruxin's surprised gaze and said with a wry smile, "I didn't take the initiative to do this. General Manager Yu personally ordered me to do it. How dare I not do it?"
Tang Ruxin frowned and took the mouse to look through the document. "Why did he ask you to do this? Why did he ask you to do it? When did he ask you to do it?"
"Let's look at the data first." Song Mu brushed past her questions and pointed to the conclusion page on the screen. "Over the past ten years, our company has had a total of 28 accidents, 206 incidents, and 49 production fluctuations. Broken down into the three major areas, there were 74 incidents in process production, 133 in equipment and facilities, and 76 in safety. Of these, 215 involved human error or violations of regulations."
When Tang Ruxin saw the time statistics page, she was stunned.
"Does what happened in the past two years account for 64 percent?"
This is crazy... Have accidents exploded since she took office? Especially this year, accounting for 40% of all accidents in the past ten years?!
Seeing Tang Ruxin's frighteningly pale face, Song Mu hurriedly said, "The safety situation has become increasingly severe in the past two years, and the classification of accidents has become increasingly strict. This is also one of the reasons..."
"No, the accident statistics and analysis data in the company's annual reports for the past two years are different. The annual report compares the data from the same period of the previous year, and there is not such a big gap. Where did you get this original data?"
"I've retrieved the monthly performance data for all production departments. Management and specialized departments at each facility may conceal minor incidents. They may not necessarily report them to the company, but they will always assess those responsible. Monthly performance data is the most accurate."
Tang Ruxin waved her hand. "It's not a secret, but the data wouldn't be so different. And accidents that can be concealed usually don't deserve severe punishment."
"Yes, so the data I extracted all shows that the responsible persons were assessed at more than 50% of their personal bonuses. The intensity of this assessment is no small matter. I also compared it with the accident data reported at the company's monthly production meetings." Song Mu pulled up another spreadsheet page, which showed the accident data discussed at the company's meetings. "The difference between the two figures is only 3%. In other words, only 3% of accidents are concealed."
Tang Ruxin almost couldn't stand, and the joints of her fingers that were holding the corner of the table turned white from exerting too much force.
"Are you saying that the data in the year-end report is falsified? Who would do that? What's their goal?"
"I haven't found any. This involves data submission from three departments and the preparation of the year-end report by the general manager's office. Currently, data submissions are all made via email or corporate instant messaging and are only kept for a year at most. The year-end report, from first draft to final draft, undergoes repeated revisions and reviews until it is finally approved by the general manager. So many people are involved in this process that I can't track it."
Song Mu stood up, walked around to the other side of the desk, took the cup of water and handed it to Tang Ruxin.
"The reason I'm in such a hurry to find you is to tell you this. Once this data analysis is handed over to Yu Zhe, or any other company manager, you might..."
Tang Ruxin took a deep breath, then slowly calmed down. Her hands and feet were numb, her heart was pounding, her back was covered in sweat, and her ears were ringing. She knew it was a heart rhythm disorder caused by excessive stress, and she just needed to slowly adjust her breathing to recover.
Seeing that Tang Ruxin was not in a good state, Song Mu hurriedly put down the cup and reached out to help her, but hesitated and put his hand down again.
"Yu Zhe, how did you get arranged to do this?"
"He just said..."
"I mean, did he tell you in person, over the phone, or by email?"
"A phone call," Song Mu said, and after a moment's thought, he added, "It wasn't an office call, it was a cell phone call. He was probably driving at the time. I heard him honking his horn."
Tang Ruxin leaned on the edge of the table and slowly sat down on the chair. She frowned and stared at the computer screen, muttering to herself:
"Yu Zhe, it's because of this..."
