Chapter 57
Tang Jiulin reminded Tang Ruxin of something: she should go see Yu Zhe.
After the accident, she was only concerned about Yu Zhe's life and death. Knowing he wouldn't die, she stopped caring about him. Only after seeing a doctor at the hospital did Tang Ruxin realize the severity of Yu Zhe's injuries: a concussion, broken ribs, a fractured right hand, and a comminuted fracture of his left knee. He could no longer use his right hand, and he would never be able to walk normally again.
Tang Ruxin held the flowers and quietly watched Yu Zhe, who was still sleeping. His head was wrapped in gauze and a net, his face was still bruised, and his forearm was in a plaster cast. Other signs of treatment were hidden under the bedding, making it impossible to see, but it must have been even more shocking.
The little hatred and resentment she had with Yu Zhe disappeared at this moment, and the only thing left in her heart was anger towards Tong Jiayu.
Yu Zhe was afraid of spiders, something she had indeed told Tong Jiayu many years ago. She treated it as a joke, but also as a foreshadowing for future pranks. The Donghe Refining and Chemical Plant's pump and compressor rooms, often poorly maintained and warm indoors, became a haven for these cold-shy spiders in winter.
So every winter, Yu Zhe refused to attend the emergency drills at the facility, instead having the general manager's deputy go in his place. But he couldn't completely avoid the plant, especially with the recent surge in accidents, and his car had been a frequent sighting.
The car's underside was warm after the run, so whether cold-shy spiders would crawl onto his car was anyone's guess. He lost his car keys eight months ago, too long ago to establish a strong connection between the two events. Thus, the true cause of the accident remained elusive.
As Yu Lei said, too many coincidences are not coincidences.
Tong Jiayu was present when Yu Zhe lost his car keys, knew that Yu Zhe was afraid of spiders, and returned shortly after Yu Zhe left her home on the day of the accident. These three things combined made it impossible for Tang Ruxin to deceive herself and others into exonerating Tong Jiayu.
——But there is no hard evidence. Like all the cases that seem like accidents so far, there is no hard evidence.
Tang Ruxin sat beside Yu Zhe's hospital bed, quietly reviewing the surveillance footage stored on the server, from the moment Yu Zhe rang the doorbell until he left. The police must have seen this footage and found nothing, but she just wanted to see it again.
Yu Zhe's car wasn't within the surveillance range, so he must have parked in the open space next to the house. It wasn't the main thoroughfare, so it was less crowded and convenient for parking. If she stopped for a short time, she'd usually park there, which was a blind spot for the surveillance. Yu Zhe appeared on the surveillance camera at 9:07 and left at 9:15. His car pulled out of the house at 9:16; though he couldn't see it, he could hear the wheels grinding against the curb.
If Tong Jiayu wanted to put the spider on his car, it should have been between 9:07 and 9:15.
This type of spider is afraid of the cold and will freeze to death within half a day if it leaves a warm environment. Tong Jiayu, who had sneaked away from the hospital, couldn't have gone back to the equipment area specifically to catch spiders, nor could she have predicted that Yu Zhe would come to find her at that time.
Yu Zhe's appearance and departure took only eight minutes. How did Tong Jiayu find the spider? She returned from the hospital with Yu Zhe's car keys, suggesting she had premeditated the attack. When did Tong Jiayu develop the murderous intent against Yu Zhe? Was she planning this when she stole Yu Zhe's car keys eight months ago?
Tang Ruxin sighed deeply. The more she thought about it, the more she felt that Tong Jiayu was like an abyss with no bottom to see. Just who on earth had she been keeping around all these years?
"What are you doing here?"
Yu Zhe woke up and tried to sit up with one hand.
Tang Ruxin turned the lifting arm at the end of the bed and raised the head of his bed a little.
"Tang Jiulin said he would break my legs if I didn't come to see you."
"Now that you've seen it, you can go away." Yu Zhe was weak, and even his harsh words sounded like a spoiled child.
Tang Ruxin pursed her lips and smiled, saying, "Alright, to prove I've been here, let's take a photo together."
As she spoke, she turned on the camera on her phone, switched it to selfie mode and held it high, then she moved closer to Yu Zhe's head and made a scissors sign with her other hand.
"Come on, smile."
Yu Zhe was so angry that his heart ached, but he didn't have the energy to curse, so he could only close his eyes in pain.
After a moment, his ears suddenly felt hot. He turned his head in surprise and saw Tang Ruxin burying her head in his shoulder, her hair brushing against his cheek, trembling slightly.
"I'm sorry." Tang Ruxin said sullenly.
Yu Zhe was at a loss, unable to move his hands or feet. He didn't know why Tang Ruxin apologized, after all, there were so many things between them that needed to be apologized to.
Tang Ruxin sat up straight, looked at Yu Zhe's arm in plaster, and said, "In view of my sincere apology, can you tell me what you and Tong Jiayu talked about when you met in the underground parking lot of the hospital that day?"
Yu Zhe's face suddenly became awkward, as if he didn't want to mention it, but also seemed embarrassed to mention it.
"It's none of your business."
"If you don't tell me, I'll just draw a few strokes on this plaster."
Yu Zhe's eyes widened instantly, "Tang Ruxin, are you still a woman?!"
"I don't want to be a woman anymore, let alone a man." She looked at him calmly, took out a lipstick from her backpack, and opened the lid.
"Stop... stop it!" Two red circles appeared on the white plaster in an instant. Yu Zhe shouted anxiously, his voice breaking. "I'll tell you, I'll tell you!"
Tang Ruxin closed the lipstick cap, stood up and smiled.
"I'm really impressed. You really are..." Seeing her glance at the plaster on his right arm again, Yu Zhe immediately said, "I came to Tong Jiayu to inquire about you."
Yu Zhe had no choice but to repeat the conditions that Tang Jiulin had proposed to him before: in order to obtain Donghe Refining, he had to marry Tang Ruxin first.
He sought out Tong Jiayu simply to understand Tang Ruxin's preferences: her favorite perfume, favorite desserts, and her go-to makeup brands. For years, Yu Zhe had been solely concerned with how to annoy her, so suddenly being asked to please her left him clueless. Having sought help from many sources, he finally sought out Tong Jiayu, the person who knew Tang Ruxin best.
Tong Jiayu, on the other hand, knew everything, but she didn't believe he could change Tang Ruxin's mind. At the end, she even patted him on the shoulder and encouraged him, looking like she was enjoying a good show. He felt like he was being teased and laughed at by a nanny, so he left in a huff.
Tang Ruxin's face was speechless. She couldn't tell whether Tang Jiulin regarded Donghe Lianhua as her dowry or regarded her as Donghe Lianhua's dowry, so she insisted on buying one and getting one free.
But is this something that needs to be kept secret from her? Why did Tong Jiayu lie to her at that time?
"If I remember correctly, you had a car accident the day after you met Tong Jiayu. Is that right?" Tang Ruxin asked.
Yu Zhe hummed, his face gloomy, "Are those spiders related to Tong Jiayu?"
"The police are investigating, but there is no evidence yet," said Tang Ruxin.
She looked at Yu Zhe's face and admired his calmness. If it was her lying here now, and if she was the one who couldn't lift heavy objects or walk normally in the future, she probably wouldn't be able to control her emotions so well.
"Yu Zhe, if it was really Tong Jiayu who did it, I will be responsible for the rest of your life."
Yu Zhe sneered, "How can I be responsible? Are you going to marry me?"
Tang Ruxin held her chin in her hand and remained silent for a moment, then smiled and said:
"sure."
