Chapter 98
When Lawyer Bian stepped into the F District Community Service Center with his resume, he was surprised by the size of the building and noticed how well-organized everything was.
From District D to District A and then to District F, that is, from the central government to the local grassroots. Bian Lu was also feeling miserable. He didn't know if it was his own problem or if he really couldn't adapt to his colleagues. In short, he was not happy.
Entering the administrative hall, Bian Lu handed the documents to the receptionist. The receptionist was in her forties, wearing the Blue Ocean Party emblem on her chest. She glanced at him, immediately stood up, and said with a warm and flattering smile, "Secretary Bian, the Party Committee Director's Office is in the first corner room on the second floor."
Bian Lu nodded, feeling relieved, and took the information back to the second floor. He was cautious and kept an eye on the situation. He went up to the second floor carefully and knocked on the director's door.
"Please come in." Director Liu was about fifty years old, with gray hair and a kind temperament. Bian Lu noticed that he had excellent handwriting and gave people the feeling that he was easy to get along with.
Lawyer Bian replied, "Hello, Director. I'm Lawyer Bian, transferred from District A. This is my resume."
As he spoke, he handed over the information, and Director Liu agreed. Unlike Director Wang from Area A before, he not only took it with both hands, but also looked at it very carefully.
This made Bian Lu feel respected, and his guard was relaxed a little. He said in a gentle voice, "Then Director Liu, may I ask what exactly I should do?"
"Don't be in a hurry, get familiar with the environment first." Director Liu took off his glasses and put his face almost close to Bian Lu's resume, giving people a funny and amusing sense of humor.
"You've won a third-class merit." Director Liu put his glasses back on, his eyes filled with surprise and joy. He asked, "Why didn't you stay in Area D? I can't figure out why you've returned to Area F."
"To build my hometown." Bian Lu laughed and answered honestly.
He was admitted to Blue University and graduated from Blue Continent Military University. He also won third-class merit during his service. He is also handsome and has regular features. His modeling and resume are impeccable. It is strange that such a talent was not retained in District D.
Director Liu nodded and cleared his throat to sound serious. He continued patiently asking Bian Lu, "You were transferred from District A. What exactly do you do there? I'd like to have a brief understanding. As you know, District F is an underdeveloped area, certainly not as well off as District A. The funds allocated for development are also limited. Regarding poverty alleviation, we can only say that we have good intentions but are powerless. We will do our best."
It sounds like this leader is a bit inactive.
Bian Lu couldn't point it out directly, so he replied, "I used to do pretty basic odd jobs. Director, to be honest, I just don't feel like I belong in District A, and I'm unfamiliar with the place. District F, no matter how bad it is, is still my hometown, and I wanted to come back and do my bit."
"I see..." Director Liu pushed his glasses and said, "Well, there's a nursing home in our F District, do you know about it? Isn't Party Building Day coming up soon? You have a good image, so go talk to the director and ask them to send in a few people so we can organize a team-building event in our community."
"Okay." Bian Lu took the blue file bag he handed over.
Without saying anything else, Bian Lu said, "Boss, you're busy," turned around and left, closing the door. As he stepped out of the hall, he happened to run into his neighbor who was on business.
"Hey, Bian Lu, you're back?" Aunt Jiang said in surprise, "You were in District D. Oh, you graduated, right?"
"Hello, Aunt Jiang." Bian Lu nodded, stopped and chatted with her briefly, then replied, "Yes, I'm back to work in District F."
"Are you an official?" Aunt Jiang smiled brightly, sizing up his impressive appearance. "You're quite good, young man. You've become a respectable man now. I used to think you were so timid, so I told your mother to let you join the army. Hey, are you dating?"
"No, Aunt Jiang, I still have work to do." Bian Lu laughed dryly and subconsciously wanted to escape, and immediately declined her matchmaking intention.
Aunt Jiang noticed his shyness and immediately sighed, giving in, and said, "Okay, come and play when you have time."
When he returned to his hometown, he didn't see his parents, but he ran into his neighbor first. Bian Lu could no longer hide his whereabouts, so he immediately walked back to his old house.
In front of the dilapidated and aged iron gate, he had already taken out the key, but still decided to knock on the door, "Dad - Mom - I'm back."
It is now 6 o'clock in the afternoon. Bian Lu thought that his parents should have gotten off work from the power plant.
The door opened, but Bian Lu felt inexplicably nervous, as if his heart was in his throat, anticipating the uneasy looks on his parents' faces.
"Oh, you're back." Bian's mother was actually wearing pajamas, and her right hand seemed to be injured and was in a cast.
"What's wrong with you, Mom?" Bian Lu picked up the oranges he had bought and saw her injuries. He said kindly, "Oh, look, I bought you some fruit you like."
"Who said I like eating sea oranges? They're so salty." Bian's mother opened the door and let him in, saying, "Isn't this the only kind of fruit you can eat at the base?"
Bian Lu laughed apologetically and walked in. He looked at the identical furnishings in the house, the slightly rotten and damp smell in the air, and the always dim light in the house due to the small windows.
All of this made Bian Lu feel depressed.
"Are you back to work in District F now?" asked Bian's mother.
Bian Lu: "Yeah, that's right. It sounds like a demotion, but I think it's okay. After all, it was really my own choice to return to District F. The work and compensation are about the same."
"I've noticed that you're a fickle person, you can't take root anywhere. Tell me, where have you been working for more than three years since you graduated?" said Bian's mother.
"Mom, the thing is, I joined the army during my sophomore year, then transferred to a military academy. I was already 26 when I graduated. I spent a year looking for a job in District D, and another year preparing for the military civilian exam. I only really entered society recently... and I'm already 28, oh my god."
Bian Lu frowned, looking impatient, and replied, "Times have changed. It's not the hard work that will reward leaders. It's not like you're going to be appreciated. With my starting point and my work, I wouldn't be able to afford a toilet in District D even if I worked for hundreds of years."
"You are just lazy!" Bian's mother clicked her tongue and scolded him.
Bian Lu chuckled twice, went into his room and closed the door, leaving a last sentence: "Yes, yes, I am lazy ~ You are diligent and willing to work ~"
Bian Lu closed the door and then remembered that his luggage was in the hotel where he was temporarily staying. He had no intention of living with his parents this time, so as to avoid nagging or being urged to get married and find a partner.
The room was very clean, except that it was a little damp. The sheets and quilts were all available. It seemed that Bian's mother had already prepared them.
Bian Lu thought of his mother's plastered hand, then looked at his own clean and bright room, his heart softened, and he said loudly: "Thank you, Mom——"
"Have you eaten yet?" Bian's mother said from outside: "I'll make you a bowl of noodles."
"No, no, I'm not hungry and don't want to eat." Bian Lu lay down on the bed that had been with him since childhood and closed his eyes as if he was feeling the taste of home.
He was drowsy until his wrist trembled. He looked and saw it was a bracelet. Bian Lu clicked it and found a friend request from An Jing, and two missed calls.
And, a text message.
An Jing: I'm in District F. Where is your home?
-
Bian Lu jumped up suddenly and rubbed his eyes, as if he couldn't believe it, but at the same time, a strange feeling of surprise rose in his heart.
Teacher An, are you reluctant to leave yourself?
This thought popped up in Bian Lu's mind, and then he came back to his senses. He thought to himself, how could I be so obsessed? I was already infatuated with him as soon as he showed some interest.
Damn it, Bian Lu was shocked to find that he was actually a love-brained person.
So Mr. Bian couldn't hold back any longer, took off his bracelet, unfolded it into vertical screen, called back, and raised the corners of his mouth while waiting for the person to pick up.
On the other side, An Jing was wearing thin clothes, with a red nose, shivering alone at the end of the station while dragging his suitcase. Finally, he received a call from Bian Lu.
"Hey." When An Jing heard this, he wanted to curse him as a heartless man on the spot. However, he was the one who wanted to save this relationship, so he had to shut up and act good.
"I, I didn't bring enough clothes, it's a bit cold." An Jing said.
Such an opening also made Bian Lu want to call him a heartless man.
Teacher An turned out to be just as he expected, a stubborn, wooden-headed person, an idiot in love. Even the sweet words he said to please him sounded like a leader giving orders, which made him feel uneasy.
So Bian Lu said angrily: "If you don't bring enough, you will just freeze to death." After saying that, he hung up the phone.
An Jing didn't give up. He had come here just for this reason, so he called again. After two beeps, the call was connected. He asked, "Where is your home? I came all the way here to see you."
Bian Lu was startled, secretly overjoyed, but the smile on his face became increasingly difficult to suppress. He pretended to be calm and said, "Why did you come to see me?"
"..." An Jing thought for a long time and said with difficulty: "I miss you."
Bian Lu's heart skipped a beat when he heard these words. These were sweet words that the arrogant Teacher An had never said before.
"Do you often say this to other people?" Bian Lu covered his mouth with his fist, his eyes full of tenderness.
"No, I only told you." An Jing scratched his hair irritably, as if trying to make up for the awkwardness of saying sweet words. His nose felt sore, perhaps from the cold or perhaps from feeling wronged. Finally, he said, "Bian Lu, you may be the first person I've ever really loved."
Bian Lu's voice was hoarse, and he could hear the heaviness in his words. The two of them sat in silence for a long time, their ears filled with silence and expectation. Only the faint sound of his breathing reminded them that the call was still going on.
"Bian Lu, I like you." An Jing said again in a serious tone, "Didn't you say that I was your dream? I think if you want, I can make your dream come true anytime and anywhere."
"If it really doesn't work out, I can divorce you." An Jing said, "If you lack a sense of security, or feel very inferior, then I will come and make a promise to you personally."
Bian Lu was speechless, his pupils trembling, and his eyes were full of disbelief.
"So, tell me, where are you, please?" An Jing said this softly and slowly, with an earnest request that was not humble at all.
"Are you at the station?" Bian Lu took a deep breath, feeling that he should show some courage. He made a quick decision and said, "Wait, I'll pick you up right away."
Just as he finished speaking, a giant blue whale flew over An Jing's head, letting out a cry that echoed throughout the base. He looked up, smiled, and whispered, "Okay."
After hanging up the phone, An Jing felt relaxed all over. An unprecedented warmth swept through his heart, like a brilliant firework.
