Chapter 25: Doing Business Until the Morgue
A new day, one o'clock in the afternoon.
Senior first-level apprentice Hayden walked into the second morgue in silence.
He glanced at the teleportation platform, the candlelight on it was dim.
Still no work today.
This is a good thing.
He has been dealing with dead bodies for three years.
The job itself was disgusting to him and disgustingly boring.
But he had to do it. If he didn't do this job, he wouldn't know how to pass the monthly tests.
The number of first-level apprentices entering the wizard tower with him has been decreasing.
A few successfully advanced to the second level, a few died in the test, a few died in the study, and a few persisted in obscurity like him.
So, even though he was extremely tired of this job, Hayden couldn't give it up.
There was no work today, so Hayden walked to the table against the wall and flipped through a book.
But he quickly put the book back.
He has read these books many times, but they cannot help him advance to the second level.
"Actually, if you think about it this way, it's not a bad idea to not be promoted to level two." Hayden looked at the next door, "There's already a level two apprentice doing the first step of handling corpses. If I didn't have this job, I would probably be like the other level two apprentices, worrying about whether I could pass the test every six months, right?"
Thinking of this, Hayden lost all desire to read.
He walked to the conveyor belt and suddenly wanted to lie down on it and try it out.
But just as he put one leg on the transporter platform, there was a knock on the door.
He was startled and almost dropped his hand into thin air.
Who would come to this place at this time? Could it be the newcomer from yesterday?
Hayden raised his chin and sauntered to the door.
"Who is it?"
"I'm a second-level apprentice, Sid."
Hayden's chin and shoulders immediately tucked into one.
He quickly opened the door and saw the impatient blond young man through the crack.
The scarlet door opened a crack and Hayden hurried out.
"Senior, you're looking for me?"
Along with Hayden, the disgusting stench from the morgue also came out.
Sid frowned and took two steps back.
Seeing this, Hayden quickly turned around and closed the door.
"I heard that there's a new person taking over the job in the morgue?"
"Yes, a noisy little boy."
"How's he doing?"
"This... I haven't seen it yet, should it be okay?"
Sid sneered, "How well can a newcomer do? Besides, my junior also wants to do this job."
"Ah?" Hayden looked up in surprise.
"Can you find a way to free up this job for him?"
"Free up?" Hayden pulled his hands back in embarrassment, his eyes swaying around, "But the work in the morgue is all assigned by Instructor Kaz."
"When this job becomes available, I will naturally let my junior apply for it." Sid rubbed his fingers together, his fingertips deformed slightly, and fine white powder fell off.
"Well, then should I go and persuade that newcomer?" Hayden asked tentatively.
"Heh," Hisoka laughed with an ambiguous tone, "If you do a good job and satisfy me, I will give you a Midnight Feather."
“Ah!” Hayden straightened up completely, his eyes wide open, “I, I… I will definitely let that kid…”
Sudden!
"Have you done business till the morgue?"
A deep voice interrupted their conversation.
Hayden and Sid looked further into the corridor at the same time.
"Is it the Level 2 apprentice in charge of the morgue?" Sid narrowed his eyes. "He came so early? I'm afraid there will be more bloodshed this time."
However, when the person who spoke walked out of the darkness, Sid's pupils in his narrowed eyes suddenly shrank.
Hayden next to him almost sat on the ground.
"Teacher, mentor..."
The person who walked out from the end of the corridor was not a second-level apprentice, but mentor Kaz.
Sid was stared at by Kaz, and his heart trembled. However, thinking of the past style of Kaz, he said with a stiff upper lip: "Teacher Kaz, we are just..."
Kaz raised his hand and interrupted Sid, "I don't care what you do."
Sid felt relieved, he knew that his mentor would not care about his apprentice's affairs.
However, Kaz's next words almost made Sid fall to the ground.
"A lot of servants and apprentices have died in the tower recently. Go out and bring back a dozen seedlings from the outside world."
Sid's heart trembled, and he tried to change the situation, "Okay, Teacher Kaz, after I finish the test next month, I will..."
"Next month? This month! You have to leave tomorrow, no, before tonight!"
Kaz glared. He was not tall, but when he looked angry, the other two apprentices felt as if they were pinned to the ground by his aura.
"Teacher Kaz," Sid no longer had the arrogance he had just shown, sweating profusely, "I'm going to take the test next month. If I leave the tower now, I may not be able to get back in time."
Katz turned to Sid and said, unmoved, "You have to understand one thing."
"All the servants, maids, and apprentices in the Wizard Tower are the property of the Tower Master, and you," Kaz pointed his wrinkled index finger at Sid, "you have caused losses to the Tower Master, so naturally you need to compensate for it."
Sid opened his mouth, but in the end no word came out.
A drop of sweat slid down his temple, fell to the ground and broke into several petals.
…
It was the next afternoon that Saul learned that Sid had left the tower.
The person who told him was still Mentor Kaz.
"Senior Sid?" Thor's face was a little pale.
He pressed his hand on the book he had just copied, his fingertips contracted, and the pale yellow paper was gathered into a wrinkled ball.
"But why... does he want to harm me?" Thor shook his head in confusion.
"You'll need to figure it out on your own." Kaz took out a book and threw it on the table.
Thor looked down and saw a thin silk book.
"Guide to Corpse Refining".
It was the first time he had seen a book made of cloth.
"I see that you, uh, have good talent. Take this book and have a look. If you don't understand, you can ask me." Kaz glanced at Thor's reaction and turned away.
Saul picked up the book.
A wizarding book that is not a textbook costs at least two magic crystals a day, but the value of a guide is much higher than cognition.
Mentor Kaz gave him a lot of magic crystals.
"What a nice mentor," Thor said, chuckling softly.
He put "Corpse" aside first, restrained the smile on his face, and carefully smoothed out the book that he had just crumpled.
"Chi~"
There was a slight sound, and Thor looked over when he heard it.
The candle lights on the teleportation platform turned bright white.
Thor walked over and pulled the wrench down hard.
The black conveyor belt started rolling, and a fresh corpse covered with black leather emerged from under the tassels.
This time the deceased was a stranger and died peacefully.
Thor lifted the black leather and found that the body was indeed relatively intact.
This was his first time handling it independently.
Thor let himself fall into a semi-immersive meditative state.
Although the walking monster picture was inserted by Sid to kill him, Thor was surprisingly suitable for meditating with this picture.
Besides, since the hardcover book didn't say anything, we can continue to use it! Thor picked up the tools on the table behind him.
The corpse swayed gently, and in a trance, the person lying on the transmission platform turned into Sid's appearance.
Thor closed his eyes and brought himself back to reality.
"I have a month now, but when West Germany comes back, I'm afraid there will be a more fierce counterattack."
Although the crisis was not completely resolved, it at least gave Thor a chance to catch his breath.
"It seems that as long as I am still useful, I can get some protection. I still need to make myself more useful."
As Thor worked, he glanced at the "Guide to Corpse Creation" that Kaz had given him.
Suddenly, he stopped what he was doing.
"Is there any connection between corpse refining... and witch body transformation?"
