Chapter 18 Human Nature

The last person was manager Wu Dahai.

He was the oldest and also the fattest of them all. He had gained weight in middle age, so his physical strength was naturally not up to par.

But whether intentionally or unintentionally, Wu Dahai grabbed someone in front of him in his hasty escape, pulled him backward hard, and used the force to run forward.

The person he pulled stumbled and almost fell, naturally becoming the last one.

Whoosh!

A flash of silver light.

The last person pulled by Wu Dahai was decapitated instantly, without even having time to let out a scream.

Upon seeing this, Fang Xiu immediately stopped and rubbed his thigh a couple of times before continuing to run forward. He wasn't worried about falling behind at all. Young and strong, coupled with regular exercise, he was in the prime of his life.

He didn't know how to quickly awaken his spirituality, so he could only make these attempts, which he didn't know were even meaningful.

The corridor on the right was very long. It took them a full minute to run to the end, where a wide-open space opened up.

It is a restaurant.

The restaurant was large but empty, filled with old tables and chairs, and in the corners were stoves and several large black pots.

Wang Ziteng was overjoyed upon seeing this: "Restaurants usually have an exit that connects to the outside world."

Upon hearing this, everyone became excited, completely ignoring the restaurant's environment. They looked around and immediately spotted the door on the far left of the restaurant, then ran towards it.

Fang Xiu, on the other hand, remained in second to last place throughout, running calmly while taking in his surroundings.

Upon entering, one finds another dimly lit and cramped corridor, only this one seems even darker, with the ceiling lights appearing as if they might go out at any moment.

Nobody cared about the environment; they just wanted to escape as quickly as possible.

The group quickly reached the end of the corridor, where Wang Ziteng, who was leading the way, looked extremely grim: "There's no way out!"

It turned out that the end of the corridor was a dead end.

This is simply illogical. According to Wang Ziteng's understanding, restaurants, which are densely populated places, usually have escape routes or passages connecting to the outside world. How could it be a dead end?

Does this mean the entire hospital is completely closed off and they don't want anyone to leave?

"Look! There's a door!" a colleague exclaimed.

At the end of the corridor on the right, there was a narrow door, so narrow that only one person could pass through at a time. The door was made of wood, the paint on it had faded, and it had a small glass window.

Upon seeing the door, everyone rushed inside without a second thought, regardless of what was inside, for there was something sinister outside!

Fortunately, there was no monster inside the door.

This is a small room filled with clutter such as brooms, mops, old tables and chairs.

So much so that after the five of them squeezed in, it was difficult for them to find a place to stand.

"Damn it! This is a storage room! There's no way around here!" Wang Ziteng cursed wildly, losing his composure.

The others also looked desperate.

Dead end!

This is a dead end!

They were caught in a bizarre trap.

Did I make the wrong choice?

Fang Xiu calmly thought that he should choose the left-hand path next time.

He remained completely calm, after all, this was just a trial and error for him.

He thought for a moment and decided to rewind and start over, choosing the left-hand path.

It's too late to run back now. Two minutes have already passed, and there's only one minute left before the female doctor's next attack. If we turn back now, we'll just be easy prey for her.

Although Fang Xiu could choose to send one person to their death to help the others escape, he felt it wouldn't make much sense.

Currently, there are only five of us left, including myself. Nobody knows how far we still need to run, or how many lives will be lost along the way.

Just as Fang Xiu was about to walk out the door to find the female doctor and rewind time, Wang Ziteng's angry voice came: "It's all your fault! Fang Xiu! If you hadn't chosen the wrong path, would we be stuck here?"

"Fang Xiu! If you didn't know which path to choose, couldn't you have discussed it with everyone? Why did you have to take the right path on your own?" Wu Dahai angrily echoed.

The other person besides Zhao Hao, though not explicitly saying anything, revealed a hint of blame in their eyes.

Fang Xiu couldn't help but smile. He rarely smiled these days, except when he was extremely excited about something strange.

But for some reason, he wanted to laugh when he faced Wang Ziteng and the others at this moment.

Zhao Hao stepped forward and vehemently retorted, "Brother Xiu didn't force you to come. Didn't you want to come on your own? You were the ones who asked for directions in the first place, and now you're blaming Brother Xiu for choosing the wrong way. If you're so capable, why don't you choose the way yourselves?"

“We may not be capable, but at least we wouldn’t act on our own like he did. If we don’t know the way, we can discuss it together, right? We all trusted him and let him choose, but who knew he would make such a bad choice! He betrayed our trust and led us down a dead end!”

Wu Dahai, as expected of a manager, silenced the taciturn Zhao Hao with his words.

"Alright, stop arguing." Wang Ziteng shouted, "The most important thing now is to think about how to survive."

From my observation, this monster only attacks one person at a time, and there's a two- to three-minute safe period afterward. So, the only solution now is for us to choose one person to lure the monster away while everyone else runs away.

The moment Wang Ziteng said those words, the atmosphere in the room instantly became strange.

Even a fool could tell that this wasn't a diversionary tactic; it was a suicide mission, sacrificing one's own life to save everyone else's.

Wang Ziteng took in everyone's expressions and had already made up his mind.

His sudden questioning of Fang Xiu was a setup for this moment. When everyone blames Fang Xiu, who else could be chosen to go out and die?

Wang Ziteng knew very well that he had to do this. This was a preemptive strike, because people are easily swayed by the crowd when they are in a panic and don't think things through.

If someone were to say that Wang Ziteng is a heartless rich second-generation and should die first, then he would probably really die.

Just as the atmosphere became strange, Wang Ziteng made an unexpected move, suddenly shoving Fang Xiu.

He shouted, "If it weren't for Fang Xiu, we wouldn't be in this predicament. So Fang Xiu must atone for his sins! Come and help us!"

The remaining few looked at each other, not wanting to die themselves, but they really couldn't bear to live by killing others and didn't have the guts.

"Let go of Brother Xiu!" Zhao Hao roared and charged toward Wang Ziteng.

Wang Ziteng was shocked and shouted, "Wu Dahai, aren't you coming to help right now!"

When seeking help from others, it's best to call out the name of one person to assign responsibility; this can yield surprisingly good results.

Don't say who can help me; instead, be specific to the individual. If you know their name, call them by name; if you don't know their name, describe their characteristics and specify someone to help.

Wang Ziteng is quite proficient in these simple psychological tricks. Although he enjoys eating, drinking, and having fun, the elite education he received from childhood still proved useful.
