If Gu Huaiwei and Scar Woman spent enough time together, she would find out that Scar Woman came from the toy factory in District 8.
The explosion that happened a few months ago was planned by the white-haired old man and the scarred woman.
Scar Woman was originally a product produced by a toy factory.
As she and other slaves were being transported to the upper city, she overheard the escorting bodyguards talking about their true fate: they were not to be killers or lovers, but to become prey for a killing party in the upper city.
Having a way to survive is one thing, and going to die is another.
After learning the truth, Scar Woman made a prompt decision to cut off her long hair and disfigure her face.
She desperately escaped back to the toy factory and told the incident to the only person she trusted - the white-haired old man.
The white-haired old man is Scar Woman's adoptive father.
After learning about the situation, the white-haired old man looked at the child he had raised in the cage and decided to betray the toy factory.
He escaped from District 8 with Scar Woman and the four remaining best slaves in the factory, wandering in the wilderness of the radiation zone to avoid being hunted down.
It was later that we came to the Oasis Hotel.
Gu Huaiwei didn't know about these things.
A makeshift slave market located in the abandoned subway station of the Iron Ring.
The underground can isolate nuclear radiation and better display the commodity called slaves.
The subway entrance was like a gaping abyss, pitch black and without any light.
Gu Huaiwei walked down the elevator that had stopped running long ago. The rotten smell in the air penetrated her nose, and even the mask could not block it.
Broken light tubes hang from the ceiling, and the incomplete billboard has become blurred by the erosion of time. If you look carefully, you can still see the words "Underground City, a New Era Green Residence" written on it.
They walked all the way inside.
The rusty rails extend deeper into the darkness.
They didn't stop until they saw many small stalls set up temporarily on both sides of the track.
"This is it." Back underground, Carl took off the mask that was making him feel stuffy.
The air here was quite turbid, but Carl still took a long breath.
"If you want to buy a slave, remember to choose one that's older and stronger, and less likely to die."
Gu Huaiwei plans to hire two doormen to help guests carry their luggage at the hotel entrance.
A worn oil lamp illuminated a small area of their stall, and the dim light revealed the greedy and indifferent faces of the slaves.
Gu Huaiwei walked slowly, observing the slaves in the iron cages.
They huddled in cages, most of them small and thin.
Some lowered their heads and remained silent, while others had dull eyes.
There were men, women, young and old, all wearing heavy chains, their wrists and ankles covered with scrapes, bloodstains and bruises, and they looked very unhealthy.
The slaves in the cage occasionally coughed faintly, but were mostly silent, making it impossible to tell whether they were sleeping or had fainted.
There are far fewer customers here than in the ground market.
Slaves themselves are not cheap, and most of the slaves here are of unknown origin and their health cannot be guaranteed, so business is average.
Gu Huaiwei tilted her head and asked Karl: "Are all the slaves here from the toy factory?"
"How is that possible?" Carl scratched his head and pursed his lips, "Don't listen to the slave traders' nonsense, the toys coming out of the toy factory are all specially supplied to the upper city.
The sources of the things here are either stolen, robbed, or voluntary. Anyway, there won’t be any good stuff.
There's a more developed slave market in the lower city, and it's much larger than here. If you're not in a hurry to buy, I can take you there for a stroll."
"No, it's troublesome to go back and forth." Gu Huaiwei looked away.
The situation in the downtown area is complicated, and now is not a good time to enter.
Slave traders hawked their wares.
Gu Huaiwei discovered that the slave traders here actually sold rat people. They put collars on the rat people and then beat them continuously.
Because of their short lifespan and deformed bodies, rat people are very cheap and can be taken away for just a few gold coins, like lowly livestock.
Several rat people were beaten to death on the spot for resisting.
She frowned, feeling a little uncomfortable about death, but ignored it and continued walking forward.
When passing by an iron cage, Gu Huaiwei's ankle was suddenly grabbed tightly by a skinny little hand.
She looked down and saw a skinny little child.
The child was so dirty, with frizzy hair covering his face, and his body was as shriveled as a dehydrated lentil. There were only two pieces of rags hanging on his body, and his whole body was covered with scars. He was dying, but there was a stubbornness in him that was hard to ignore.
"Buy me, the owner of the Oasis Hotel. I came from the toy factory. I recognize you!"
His voice was very hoarse, as if his throat was burned by something.
However, Gu Huaiwei could vaguely recognize that this was a little boy.
Gu Huaiwei was about to ask a question when she suddenly heard the sound of a whip breaking through the air.
As a fresh blood mark appeared on the little boy's arm, the slave trader kicked him fiercely: "You bastard, who told you to touch the guests! Take your dirty paws back now!"
The little boy gritted his teeth and held Gu Huaiwei's ankle tightly, unwilling to let go, as if this hand was his last straw.
A few more whips came down.
The little boy gritted his teeth and persevered.
If you keep fighting, you'll die.
Gu Huaiwei raised her hand to stop the slave trader from beating the little boy. She threw him a gold coin and said with a smile, "Wait, let me talk for a few minutes. If it's suitable, I'll buy him."
