Chapter 18 You reap what you sow.

Chapter 18 You reap what you sow.

Professor Zhao was still staring blankly at that small patch of black soil, wishing he could take a microscope and count all the microorganisms inside.

Zhao Di had already taken the small paper packet out of her pocket.

The paper package was very ordinary; it was the kind of yellow straw paper used to wrap Chinese medicine.

But when I opened it...

The seeds inside are different.

The wheat seeds were frighteningly large, each one the size of a peanut, golden and shimmering in the sunlight like golden beans.

"These seeds were given to me by the fairy uncle."

Zhao Di said in a childish voice.

She remembered the system saying that if she planted it, she would have big steamed buns to eat.

The little girl squatted beside the patch of black soil she had just "improved," and poked small holes with her little finger.

Then put those gold beans in one by one.

"You reap what you sow..."

"Plant a steamed bun, and meat will grow..."

Zhao Di muttered to herself as she planted the crops.

Professor Zhao snapped out of his daze and, seeing Zhao Di burying something in the ground, instinctively tried to stop her.

"Hey! Baby, don't bury her like that!"

"This soil is a treasure; we need to take it back to the lab for testing. We can't just waste it!"

But when he saw what Zhao Di was holding, he swallowed the word "stop" back.

What kind of seed is that?

Professor Zhao has spent his whole life working in agriculture, from south to north, he has seen all kinds of wheat.

He had never seen such a large, plump wheat seed, which also exuded an air of preciousness.

"This was also... given to me by the fairy uncle?"

Professor Zhao asked cautiously, his voice low, as if afraid of disturbing something.

Zhao Di buried the last seed and then patted the soil flat with her little hands.

"Mmm!"

"My uncle said that it will grow tomorrow and then we can eat our fill."

Professor Zhao gave a wry smile.

tomorrow?

A child is just a child; they can't speak coherently.

Even if it's a divine seed, it still takes ten days to half a month to sprout and several months to mature.

There's no such thing as growing up overnight.

However, looking at this strange black soil and then at those strange seeds...

A ridiculous thought suddenly popped into Professor Zhao's mind.

What if?

What if this child really is a celestial being?

"Okay, let's plant it here."

Professor Zhao sighed.

He didn't plan to dig the soil away either.

He found a few dry branches nearby and carefully stuck them around the small patch of land to build a simple fence.

"No one is allowed to touch this land!"

Professor Zhao straightened up and spoke seriously to his old friends.

"From now on, I will stay here."

"I want to see what kind of seed this god gave me will grow into!"

It got dark.

The nights in the Gobi Desert are bitterly cold.

The wind howled, like the howling of wolves.

Lin Jianguo came to ask Zhao Di to come home for dinner.

I saw Professor Zhao, wrapped in a tattered overcoat, squatting on the ground, shivering and refusing to leave.

"Old Zhao, let's go back. It's freezing cold, don't catch a cold."

Lin Jianguo advised.

"I'm not going back!"

Professor Zhao is as stubborn as a donkey.

"I'll stay here and keep an eye on things; this is our last hope."

Lin Jianguo had no choice but to let Zhao Di say goodbye to Grandpa Zhao, and then he carried Zhao Di home.

Professor Zhao really didn't sleep that night.

He would occasionally shine a flashlight on the ground.

There was no movement in the first half of the night.

In the latter half of the night, the wind picked up, and he became increasingly sleepy.

Just as dawn was breaking.

Right in that darkest moment before dawn.

A soft rustling sound startled Professor Zhao awake.

That was the sound of the soil being pushed aside.

That was the sound of life breaking through the soil.

Professor Zhao suddenly turned on his flashlight.

At that moment, he felt like he was dreaming.

All I could see was that small patch of black soil.

The tender green seedlings are growing upwards at a speed visible to the naked eye!

No! That's not a sudden burst of growth! That's rampant growth!

First there were two leaves, then four, then six...

The stem was as thick as a chopstick, a bright green, and even faintly glowed with a blue light.

They seemed to be using up all their energy in this one moment.

jointing!

Ears are sprouting!

Just as the sun was peeking over the horizon with a reddish tinge.

That small patch of land is already a golden expanse!

That's not wheat at all.

Those were practically saplings!

The wheat ears were as big as sorghum ears, hanging heavily, each grain so plump it looked like it was about to burst.

A rich aroma of wheat instantly filled the air on this chilly morning.

"Clatter".

Professor Zhao dropped his flashlight on the ground.

He was completely stunned, staring blankly at the scene before him.

Overnight.

From seed to maturity.

This completely defies common biological sense!

This completely overturned his decades-long understanding!

"A miracle...this is a miracle..."

Professor Zhao knelt down on the ground with a thud.

He stretched out his hands, which were covered in chilblains, and tremblingly picked up a heavy ear of wheat.

Tears streamed down his wrinkled face.

"There's hope...we're saved..."

"They won't starve...the children won't starve..."

He cried like a child, his voice echoing across the empty fields.

Not long after, Commander Zhang arrived.

Chen Zhiyuan has arrived.

Lin Jianguo also arrived carrying Zhao Di, who was still half asleep.

Everyone gathered around that small patch of land, their mouths agape, as if they had seen a ghost.

"Old Zhao, this... this was planted last night?"

Commander Zhang pointed at the wheat stalks that were taller than a person's legs, and his speech became incoherent.

"Yes, Commander! It was Zhao Di who planted it last night!"

Professor Zhao was so excited that his beard was shaking.

"I stayed up all night! I watched it grow with my own eyes!"

"This is a divine seed! This is a divine seed bestowed by heaven!"

All eyes immediately turned to Zhao Di.

Zhao Di rubbed her eyes and looked at the clump of golden wheat.

The little girl wasn't particularly surprised.

The system said this is a super seed, so it's expected to grow quickly.

She only cares about one question.

"Dad, is the wheat ripe? Can we steam buns now?"

"Zhaodi wants to eat big white steamed buns."

This sentence made the adults present laugh, but it also brought them to tears.

Commander Zhang scooped up Zhao Di and planted a big kiss on her little face, his beard making her dodge.

"Eat! You have to eat!"

"Not only do you have to eat it, everyone in the base has to eat it!"

"Relay my orders!"

"Harvest this wheat! Save it for seed immediately! Clear out all the experimental fields!"

"No matter what method you use, you must plant these seeds!"

"Our lucky charm has brought us food!"
