Chapter 115: Discussion with Wan Lu
Xia Cheng didn't forget the important matter.
"I'm asking you to repay me, but I'm not asking for money. I want you to help me check my background."
"You finally reacted." Wan Lu teased, but there was no smile on his face.
"What do you know?"
"I do know, and I knew it a year ago. But some of the things I say are inappropriate, so you'd better watch out for yourself. I don't want to be the crow that announces misfortune."
Wan Lu picked up the brown paper bag that had been placed on the chair next to him and handed it to Xia Cheng.
"This contains your life story. I thought you had almost figured it out, so I brought it here."
Xia Cheng took it and gradually wrapped her fingers around the coil. She had no reason not to believe him now.
Wan Lu had known for a long time that he had been waiting for him to ask for help. Since he had asked for help, it meant that he regarded him as a trustworthy person.
She paused as she took out the paper, still not mentally prepared.
"I'm not their child, am I?"
Wan Lu hummed softly with a nasal tone.
Xia Cheng then pulled out the A4 paper, his eyes slowly scanning the text attached to the photo, his heart gradually tightening.
She saw familiar names: Xun Youdong, He Qing, An Wuyu, An Yimei...
The paper in her hand was light as a feather, yet the edge was sharp. Xia Cheng flipped it and accidentally cut a hole on her fingertip. This made her more alert, and she looked at Wan Lu with sharp eyes.
"Are these, are these true?"
Wan Lu glanced at her fingertips where blood was oozing out, pulled out a tissue from the table, and pulled her wrist.
"I hired a private investigator to investigate for a long time."
"Why are you investigating my identity?" she asked.
Wan Lu pressed the capillaries on the side of her fingertips to stop the bleeding.
"After you went to college, I asked someone to take care of you. Later, when I learned that your biological parents had been found, I thought about expanding my business in California to Hai City. I often stood outside your window, waiting for the right time to meet you again. But unexpectedly, I caught a strange person. I forgot his name, but I only remember that it had the word 'lai' in it. This person was very strange. He often looked at your window like me, so I went to investigate and accidentally involved you in the matter."
"Xiao Lai? Li Laiyang?"
"Yes, that's the name."
"So what did you find out?"
"This person knew An Wuyu and had met with him many times, but because An Wuyu didn't kill anyone at that time, I didn't pay much attention to him. Now that I think about it, he probably isn't a good person either."
Xia Cheng lowered her eyes in thought and forgot to pull back her fingers. Wan Lu held them down like that, and the two seemed to be holding hands.
"Got it. I'll keep an eye on him later."
The key point now is what the investigation said, that Xun Mo might be the real daughter of Xun Youdong and He Qing.
"If Xun Mo is Xun Youdong's real daughter, then why did the person who started all this do this? And who forged the paternity test between Xun Youdong and me..."
"Perhaps it's not a forgery." Wan Lu had read the report many times, analyzing the details. "Now we know that you are indeed An Yimei's daughter, but the identity of your biological father remains unknown. An Yimei didn't have you until after she married An Wuyu, but you were born prematurely, so the father can't be determined. What you should do now is return to the Xun family for a paternity test."
Xia Cheng agreed with Wan Lu.
Wanlu continued his analysis.
"If the results show that you are not Xun Youdong's daughter, then your biological father can only be An Wuyu. He suffers from a mental illness, and his words cannot be taken seriously. If your biological father is Xun Youdong, and Xun Mo's biological father is also Xun Youdong, then it is true that no one knows what Xun Youdong is doing. Turn to the third sheet."
Xia Cheng nodded and pulled back her fingers.
Wan Lu looked at his empty palm and his eyes darkened.
"Did you see that? An Yimei and He Qing were born on the same day in the same hospital."
"There will definitely not be such a coincidence." Xia Cheng's heart trembled.
Wan Lu nodded.
"Anything that seems like a coincidence must have someone behind it. When I think about it carefully, there is only one reason."
"What's the reason?"
Wan Lu pointed to his head.
"Xun Youdong is mentally ill."
Xia Cheng couldn't help but laugh, and he relieved her tension.
She put the paper into her file.
"Thank you for today, I will..."
Wan Lu glanced at his watch.
"I've been chatting with you for almost two hours and I'm hungry. Miss Xia, would you like to treat me to a meal?"
Under the table, the cold surface of his shoes rubbed against it again, like a snake, winding and climbing.
Xia Cheng nodded quickly and kicked him with her sneakers, her expression still kind.
"Of course, Mr. Wan has done me such a big favor, so of course I have to treat you to a meal. But I don't know where a big mosquito came from under the table and it keeps biting my leg. It's really itchy."
Both of them laughed.
*
It was a little after six o'clock and it was not yet dark. Xia Cheng, dressed in casual clothes, followed a tall man in a suit and tie into a Western restaurant.
Wan Lu was handsome, and with his blue eyes and the desolate feeling of being immersed in wind and rain for many years, he quickly attracted people's attention.
He politely pulled out a seat for Xia Cheng. Xia Cheng looked down at her student-like outfit and couldn't help complaining.
"If you had told me you were going to a place like this, I would have dressed nicer."
"If you had told me earlier, would you still be willing to dine with me?" Wan Lu handed over the menu. "Ladies first."
"You choose." Xia Cheng had no appetite. She was eager to go home and steal Xun Youdong and Xun Mo's toothbrushes.
Wanlu ordered a lot and also asked for a roast chicken.
"Will we not be able to eat it?" Xia Cheng asked.
"You don't have to eat anything else, but the roast chicken is a must." Wan Lu smiled lightly.
"Why?"
"When we were in trouble, I killed a chicken for you. Do you remember?"
"Ah!! I remember now!" Xia Cheng was still brooding over this matter for a long time.
She rested her arms on the table and tilted her head back.
"How are Guoguo and Sister Yiqiu now?"
"It's been pretty good."
The two of them weren't close to each other, but Wan Lu lowered his voice, seducing calmly, "Would you like to sit closer? I'll show you a photo of Guoguo."
"Yeah, okay."
Xia Cheng moved a stool over and put her head next to Wan Lu. Wan Lu's expression remained unchanged, but his palms were sweating. He pretended to calmly click on the screen, and his thighs were tense.
The screensaver was the back of a girl in a white dress. Xia Cheng felt somewhat familiar with her, but since it was her private matter after all, she didn't ask too much and just kept her distance.
Wan Lu opened the album. There were not many photos in it, but photos of Guoguo accounted for half of them.
There were pictures of little boys bathing, swimming, eating, playing, and there were also videos. A smile appeared on Xia Cheng's lips. She still remembered that when he was a child, he was like a monkey, purple and small when he was born, but now he was white, tender, fat and strong.
She glanced at Wan Lu again.
"As expected, the nephew resembles his uncle."
Wan Lu laughed.
"I should be more handsome than this brat."
