Chapter 90: Memories with Wan Lu (Part 3)
Xia Cheng took off the blood-stained quilt from under the woman and prepared to wash it before using it again.
After thinking about it, he gritted his teeth, put the quilt his mother brought when she got married under the woman, wiped her body clean, and put an adult diaper under the woman that was left over from his father who was paralyzed in an accident. Only then did he have the mind to take care of the child.
Fortunately, she worked hard when she was a child and was very strong, so she had the ability to do all this by herself.
"Drink it." Xia Cheng was stunned when a big hand with distinct joints stretched out to her.
Seeing that she didn't take it, Wan Lu raised his eyebrows: "You want me to feed you too?"
Xia Cheng quickly shook her head. She saw him feeding someone and found it hard to accept.
Wan Lu glanced at Huang Yiqiu, who was already clean on the bed, and went out silently again.
After Xia Cheng finished drinking, she took a break and wanted to boil a pot of water to take a bath. When she looked back, she saw that the dirty quilt she had changed had disappeared. She felt strange.
She sniffed again and smelled something burning in the air. She rushed out with her nose turned up, her jaw dropped, and she immediately ran towards the fire.
Seeing that she was not afraid of fire and was stepping into the fire with bare arms and legs, Wan Lu immediately hugged her out by the waist. Then the attack of her arms and legs fell on him, and many footprints were left on his dark clothes.
"What are you doing? That's fire!"
"Why are you burning my things?"
"It's dirty, and I just boiled water."
"Are you sick? I told you it's mine. I'm asking why you didn't tell me. I still want it!"
"I can't clean it anymore. It smells. And it looks like it's been used for so many years. Wouldn't it be better to buy a new one?"
Xia Cheng tried to break free from his arms.
"That's my grandma's! My grandma's! She left me such a small house... I, I... well, you..." Her eyes were red for a long time, and finally a tear fell. Then the tears fell down her little face like a car that couldn't be stopped.
"Where's your grandma? Ask her to buy you another one." He was puzzled.
Xia Cheng turned around and glared at him, crying: "Let's go..."
"Where did you go? I'll help you find it."
"It's going to heaven!" Seeing that the quilt was burned with several big black holes, Xia Cheng opened his mouth and bit Wan Lu's forearm with all his strength.
Wan Lu's eyebrows twitched, but he resisted letting her go. The fire was getting bigger and bigger, and he didn't want her to go in and get burned. He was stunned when he heard Xia Cheng say that it was her grandmother's relic.
While she was dazed, Xia Cheng suddenly rushed out. Wan Lu quickly grabbed her wrist. She had just said half of the word "sorry" when she was hit by a slap in the face. Her head was buzzing and the rest of the words were stuck in her throat. She felt a little annoyed.
Xia Cheng's palms felt numb. Anger and sadness swept through her heart, making her forget for a moment that the person in front of her was a tall and strong adult male. If she angered him, she would be easily strangled to death.
"I took you in and helped you only because of money. You have no right to make any decisive moves on my things. Do you understand?"
"knew."
Wan Lu was hit on the head, but he still reached out, grabbed her wrist, and pulled her over with a smile.
"Bank card number."
"What?"
"I'll give you some money."
"nerve."
"After a while, when our people come to pick us up, we'll transfer the money to you immediately."
"Haha, I just want cash."
"It's all fine." Wan Lu saw her calm down and thought coldly in his heart, what a little girl who is obsessed with money. She was insisting that this was her grandmother's relic one second, and stopped arguing the next second.
Xia Cheng stared at the white cotton that was burned by the fire. A cloud of black smoke emerged, and it seemed that the whole sky was blackened by it.
She was silent, not because of the money.
If Wan Lu looked closely, he would find how deep the sorrow and helplessness in those eyes were.
Not everyone has a choice, and the two people Xia Cheng chooses to stay with will make her life deviate from the trajectory of ordinary people.
*
Official employment doesn't start until July. Xia Cheng went on a trial yesterday. Although she gets paid, it's much less. With three days left until July, she can rest at home for three days.
Xia Cheng couldn't sleep last night, deeply regretting her recklessness. She brought back two strangers who seemed unusual. They wore fine clothes, behaved strangely, and were unwilling to see the police.
What if that man suddenly wants to kill me in the middle of the night to silence me?
People make mistakes because of ignorance, are afraid because of the unknown, regret because of confusion, and repeatedly think about the way out because of no benefits that have been realized.
After thinking all night, she heard the crowing of a rooster at dawn and sat up suddenly.
She should have made some preparations.
For example...Xia Cheng stuffed a pair of small sewing scissors into her pocket, and then slowly opened the door in her half-rotten rubber slippers.
As soon as she opened the door, she felt as if she was in fairyland.
Because there was a faint fragrance in the air. Xia Cheng followed the smell into the kitchen. The moment she lifted the lid of the pot, she saw chicken soup in the pot.
The golden fat lay in the milky white soup, and the pale chicken, dotted with green chopped green onions, seemed to be saying to Xia Cheng, "Come and eat me."
"Your saliva is about to fall into the pot." Wan Lu's voice came from the side. Xia Cheng wiped her saliva suddenly, then realized that he was teasing her.
Wanlu served her a bowl.
Xia Cheng pointed at herself in surprise.
"Can I eat it too?"
"Why not? You have your firewood, your pot, and your chicken."
Xia Cheng was stunned when drinking the soup and almost spit it out, but she couldn't bear to do so and swallowed it down.
He ran to the yard and saw that the only old hen in the chicken coop was already in the pot. He cursed and pointed at Wan Lu angrily.
"Are you sick? This is my home!"
Wan Lu rummaged through his pocket, took out the little cash he had, and stuffed it all into Xia Cheng's pocket.
"I bought it."
Such an action is extremely insulting.
But Xia Cheng's school was in a first-tier city, and if she didn't scrape together some money, she wouldn't be able to go. She had already decided to sell the chickens before school started, so now she was just moving it up a little.
She sighed and drank a big bowl of chicken soup resentfully.
Wan Lu crossed his arms over his chest, taking in her reaction. He leaned against the wall, shook his head, and smiled habitually: "Anyway, thank you for your help."
Xia Cheng raised a finger and emphasized, "This number cannot be less than a cent."
Only then did she realize that his eyes were blue, like gemstones.
"No problem, I'll give it to you in a month at most."
"You're going to stay for another month?" Xia Cheng touched his bulging pockets and couldn't help thinking, this amount of money is enough for them to stay in a hotel in town for half a year. These two people gave up the hotel and came to this remote place to have a baby. Did they offend some enemy and come here to seek refuge?
"Don't worry, I won't drag you down."
Wan Lu seemed to sense her inner thoughts and pointed them out directly. "I'm a serious person, doing serious things, but there are some things I can't tell you directly. Telling you would only harm you."
Xia Cheng buried her face in the broken bowl and glared at him:
"I don't want to hear that. I only care about what I want to care about. Since you can't go out, please stay at my house for the time being and don't go out and cause me trouble. I have no one to rely on, and all I want is stability."
If it weren't for the money and the desire to go to college, she would never have done this in her life.
This is what Xia Cheng thought of herself, but she indeed ignored the heart beating warmly in her chest.
