Chapter 51 Chapter 51 Sugar-coated bullet! I won’t be fooled...
His footsteps made a crunching sound as they stepped on the thick snow. Every step he took seemed to tread on Nie Xiangyi's heart, shocking her, filled with disbelief, yet filled with an indescribable mix of emotions.
"Master Pei, you're in good spirits." His voice was as dull as stepping on snow. "You're not with your family on New Year's Eve, but are out here having fun."
Outside, fireworks popped and exploded, their brilliant light illuminating Xie Zhiru's jade-like face for a moment. His expression was no longer the cold and noble one of the past. Instead, it was gloomy and cold, like a seductive ghost walking in the snow at night.
"Your Highness is the same." Pei Jue stared at him amidst the fireworks, his smile never wavering. "Your Highness, since I didn't see you touring the city in person today, you've had the leisure to follow me."
"Tracking? I was only trying to protect my wife." Xie Zhi's eyes were cold. "Pei Jue, are you capable of bearing the charge of abducting the prince's consort?"
Upon hearing this, Nie Xiangyi was afraid that Pei Jue would be implicated, so she only took half a step forward to block Pei Jue. "I want to leave on my own, it has nothing to do with Master Pei."
The air suddenly stagnated.
With a "bang", a gorgeous firework exploded in the night sky, and Xie Zhiming's face became increasingly cold and stern.
Xie Zhi walked closer to Nie Xiangyi, took the unlit flower tube from her hand, and looked at Pei Jue calmly, "I will spend New Year's Eve with Ah Si and his wife, so Master Pei Jue will not stay."
Such calmness is like the sky before snow, and no one knows when the blizzard will come.
Pei Jue could hear his blunt order to expel her, "But Sister A'si doesn't seem to want to spend New Year's Eve with His Highness."
Their eyes fell on Nie Xiangyi, as if waiting for her to make this decision.
Such a look made Nie Xiangyi feel uneasy. She hesitated for a moment, not knowing how to start.
Pei Jue had come here specially today, and she had no intention of rejecting his kindness. However, Xie Zhi's icy gaze was so intimidating that she couldn't bring herself to say anything.
Xie Zhi seemed to see her hesitation. He clenched his cold fingertips and turned to look at Pei Jue. "Little Master Pei, you don't have any status to accompany Ah Si on New Year's Eve." As he spoke, he glanced coldly at the wall next door. "If what happened today alarms Master Pei who is in seclusion here, Pei Jue, what will you do?"
Pei Jue remained silent for a long while before finally sighing softly. When he turned to look at Nie Xiangyi, his gentle expression remained unchanged.
"Sister Ah Si, I'll take my leave first." He smiled softly with his eyes curved. At this moment, fireworks reflected into his warm eyes. "Happy New Year's Eve."
After the splendor, the room fell into silence.
When she was alone with Xie Zhi, Nie Xiangyi felt at a loss for words. They hadn't seen each other for half a month, and Xie Zhi seemed thinner. His dark eyes just stared at her quietly.
Firecrackers fell into the snow, covering the ground with red. She lowered her eyes and looked at the flower tube in Xie Zhi's hand, thinking that she probably wouldn't be able to set off fireworks tonight.
She suddenly felt bored.
The night wind made her shiver for no reason. She turned and went into the house, closing the door. "Your Highness, please go back."
The flickering candlelight illuminated the vague outline of Xie Zhi outside the door. He stood outside the house but said nothing.
"A self-torture trick! Who are you trying to show off to?" Seeing this figure, Nie Xiangyi felt inexplicably annoyed. She punched the pillow in anger and simply buried her head in the quilt, no longer looking at the figure outside.
"Crunch..." After an unknown amount of time, the sound of footsteps stepping on the snow gradually faded away.
Although she had covered her head, Nie Xiangyi could still hear the receding footsteps clearly. She peeked out from under the covers and saw that the figure reflected in the door was indeed gradually receding.
Indeed, how could someone as aloof and noble as Xie Zhi endure such cold treatment from her? It would be better to leave! So as not to upset her!
For some reason, she felt even more annoyed. She dove back into the quilt and closed her eyes tightly.
She's going to sleep! She doesn't care anyway!
The person curled up in the quilt, but felt inexplicably upset and couldn't fall asleep.
"Bang--" The fireworks suddenly exploded, like a sudden surprise. The sound was very close, as if it was right next to my ear.
Nie Xiangyi suddenly jumped out of the bed. The brilliant fireworks reflected on the window lattice, making the firelight in the house look extremely dim.
Those were fireworks set off from the yard.
Nie Xiangyi's heart suddenly beat violently for a moment because of the dazzling colors.
She got on the bed in her slippers, quietly opened a small crack by the window, and watched the sky explode like a meteor. Her dark eyes were particularly bright under the fireworks.
At this moment, Xie Zhi just leaned over and lit one firework after another.
As this dazzling shower of stars illuminated the night sky, Nie Xiangyi's eyes suddenly met Xie Zhi's. His dark eyes were like the stars in the sky, just like the first time they met in Shanzhou, a glance that lasted a thousand years.
Her heart began to beat violently, and she closed the window in panic subconsciously.
"Ah Si, happy New Year's Eve."
Xie Zhi's voice was drowned out by the fireworks, leaving only the loud noise.
Sugar-coated bullet, Nie Xiangyi thought, she would never be fooled again!
But she chuckled for no reason. When she buried her head in the quilt, she felt severe lack of oxygen and her heart was beating violently. Even she could hear the thumping sound.
The fireworks stopped without her knowing when, and she fell into a drowsy sleep without her knowing when.
She did not sleep well. Suddenly, there was a crisp crackling sound in the night, which was vaguely the sound of dead branches being broken by the accumulated snow.
Nie Xiangyi suddenly seemed to remember something, woke up suddenly, and sat up, "Is it snowing outside?"
Han Xu glanced outside the door with some worry, then nodded, "It's been raining for a while."
She looked up and followed Hanxu's gaze, and the man's figure was still in the wind and snow outside the door.
"Miss, it's snowing heavily outside. Do you want to let His Highness in?" Han Xu hesitated for a moment and asked her.
Nie Xiangyi hesitated for a moment, then gritted his teeth and said, "Leave him alone!"
She turned her back to him and went to sleep as if she was angry. "It's all for the Zhong family's military power! I won't be fooled!"
She closed her eyes tightly, and even her eyebrows wrinkled.
Han Xu wanted to say something more, but seeing her like that, he finally shut up.
She forced herself to go to sleep, knowing she would know nothing when she fell asleep. But the night wind outside was disturbing, howling and making her unable to rest.
Nie Xiangyi tossed and turned in bed, but the dark figure reflected outside the door kept appearing in her mind.
"I'm so annoyed! I'm so annoyed!" She suddenly turned over and punched the pillow hard as if she was out of breath. Then she put on her shoes resignedly, rushed to the door angrily, and flung it open.
"you!"
Before she could finish her words, she was startled by the cold wind blowing in her face.
Xie Zhi suddenly hugged her in his arms.
His embrace carried the chill of wind and snow, yet was broad and reassuring, wrapping her tightly in it with his usual refreshing aura.
The sudden embrace made her throat feel sore for no reason. Nie Xiangyi heard her own heartbeat intertwined with Xie Zhi's chest beating, and she didn't know whose heartbeat was more violent, making the louder thumping sound.
"Xie Zhi, please let me go!" She twisted her body and struggled for a moment, "I'm freezing!"
Xie Zhi gently let her go, looking down at her, "Ah Si."
Nie Xiangyi was a little afraid to look him in the eye. She just turned around and went into the house without stopping Xie Zhi from going in.
She took out a quilt from the box and threw it on the couch in anger. Then she looked at Xie Zhi with a stern face, "Didn't I tell you to go back?"
Xie Zhi brushed the snow off his shoulders and followed her into the house.
Nie Xiangyi's hair was slightly disheveled, and she glared angrily with her round eyes, completely devoid of any aura. Her outwardly stubborn demeanor made her look like a timid, shaky-haired kitten.
Xie Zhi pursed his lips and said only, "It's hard to travel on a snowy night."
"When I followed Master Pei here just now, didn't I see that you had difficulty walking on a snowy night?" She couldn't be fooled anymore.
Nie Xiangyi threw the quilt to Xie Zhi, "Sleep on the floor! Leave tomorrow morning! I won't go back with you!"
Hanxu whispered in her ear, "Young lady, Your Highness has been outside in the wind all night. The ground is damp and cold. I'm afraid it's harmful to your health."
"I need you to remind me!" Nie Xiangyi glared at her, "Which side are you from?"
Han Xu could only laugh secretly at his stubborn look, and then he went to the side room silently.
Nie Xiangyi no longer looked at Xie Zhi. She just lay on the bed angrily, rolled over, wrapped herself in the quilt, and quietly gave up half of the bed.
She was furious. On the one hand, she felt soft-hearted, but on the other hand, she felt that Xie Zhi was really annoying, having to stand at the door all night, deliberately trying to take advantage of her.
Xie Zhi looked at her with her back to him, looking extremely angry. The corners of his mouth rose slightly for a moment, then immediately turned down.
There was the sound of silver scissors cutting the wick, and the candlelight dimmed in an instant. Nie Xiangyi heard a slight movement beside her, and a familiar, clear breath came. Xie Zhi lay gently beside her.
The two of them were each covered with a brocade quilt, like a clear dividing line.
Nie Xiangyi recalled the day she and Xie Zhigang got married, and he was like this too, lying quietly beside her.
The sound of calm breathing came to Nie Xiangyi's ears. His mind was in a turmoil and he fell asleep again without knowing when.
She slept soundly that night, and had a rare sweet dream. In the dream, her mother and grandfather were still there, His Highness treated her sincerely, and the family was reunited, setting off fireworks and watching the snow on New Year's Eve.
But in her dreams, she always felt as if something was tightly binding and entwining her, making her feel breathless. It was clearly winter, but she felt as hot as summer and sweating.
She suddenly opened her eyes. It was already bright outside. The snow that had accumulated overnight shone brightly. It was the beginning of the new year.
She was sleepy and was about to take another nap, but when she turned around, she saw Xie Zhi's cold and handsome face enlarged in front of her.
The clear dividing line had long disappeared. He held her tightly in his arms, chests pressed against each other, warmth passing through them, just like lovers in the midst of passionate love.
"Thank you!"
Xie Zhi opened his eyes slightly when he heard her voice, and then he just reached out and put her head into his arms. As if it was a subconscious action, he closed his eyes again in an instant.
He always maintained a respectful demeanor, and Nie Xiangyi had never seen him lazing around in the morning. His thick, crow-feather-like black eyelashes drooped slightly, and his face was a faint, sleepy blush, his burning breath radiating down Nie Xiangyi's cheeks.
Nie Xiangyi was about to struggle, but suddenly realized that something was wrong.
Xie Zhi felt as if he was burning with heat.
She struggled to pull a hand out of Xie Zhi's arms, reached out to Xie Zhi's forehead, and was immediately startled.
There was a whole night of wind and snow last night, and Xie Zhi developed a high fever.
"Your Highness? Xie Zhi?" She pushed Xie Zhi's chest, but he closed his eyes and did not say a word.
Nie Xiangyi couldn't help but panic and struggled in his arms, preparing to get up and call a doctor.
Xie Zhi's hands were tightly wrapped around her waist, refusing to let her go.
He buried his head in the crook of Nie Xiangyi's neck, his hoarse voice tinged with a strong nasal tone, revealing a sense of vulnerability that Nie Xiangyi had never seen before.
"Ah Si, don't leave me."
