Chapter 10: Do things with one go

"Why don't you want money? These cost me 10 copper coins. If I had known, I would have saved more. Why would I waste such money?" Zhou felt distressed and regretful. The value of things can only be realized when they are used. The same is true for the grass. Who would use it if it is not used to repair the house? "Have you had breakfast?"

"have eaten."

"Let's go and take these to your father. He's waiting to use them." So the two of them went to the end of the village together, carrying the straw.

Now everyone in the village knows that they are repairing the house at the end of the village, so when they meet on the road, they will not ask too much, just say hello to each other, but there are many people in the village who are curious about Chunxiao.

It was heard that the house at the end of the village was built for Chunxiao to live in. It seemed that the Yan family did not want to live with their divorced daughter, but judging from their behavior, they did not seem to dislike their daughter. They really couldn't understand it.

The Yan family turned a deaf ear to their criticisms. When Zhou's mother and daughter arrived at the end of the village, the father and his two sons were lifting wood from the roof. Dahe was below, Dashan was on the ladder, and Yan Bingfa was on the roof.

Zhou didn't call them. Some of the wood had been exposed to the wind and sun for several years and was easy to break. It was a dangerous job to lift the roof. She signaled Chunxiao to put the straw in the yard and started to weave the straw mat. The straw was not put on directly, but was woven into straw mats and covered on top. Only when it was dense could it truly keep out the wind and rain.

Chunxiao had never woven before, so she watched Zhou woven and started to learn from her. "Mom, where did you learn all this?" She always felt that the adults in the family were omnipotent.

Zhou smiled and said, "There's no need to learn it specially. When I was a girl, I didn't know many things either. Later, after I married your father, I learned everything slowly from the people in the village. It will be the same when you are my age." She looked at what Chunxiao was weaving in her hand and said, "You have to pull it tightly, otherwise it will leak in the rain. Look, look at this, look carefully. This thatch needs to be replaced every few years. We replaced it once in July. I should have saved more if I had known." In her heart, the ten cents were really wasted.

Chunxiao followed Zhou in weaving straw. While they were weaving, someone came to the open space. They were Uncle Mu Sheng and his son Wangzu from the village. My father was on good terms with Uncle Mu Sheng's family, so these two people were probably here to help.

Zhou greeted the two of them.

"Uncle Musheng, my father is waiting for you. You're the best at repairing the roof. Brother Wangzu, what's that in your hand?" Dashan stood on the ladder, holding the wood that Yan Bingsheng handed to him. He said, "Don't drop this wood. It will break if you drop it. It's useless, but it's good for burning firewood."

"The chisel will be needed when tying the top and embedding the wood. You come down and I'll go up to help. It will take Uncle Bingsheng a long time to dismantle it alone." After Dashan got down the ladder, the two of them climbed onto the roof nimbly.

"You all should be careful." Zhou warned.

The three of them were able to dismantle the box much faster, and Dashan and Dahe were both unable to keep up.

"The main beams of this house were well chosen and are quite solid. If the main beams were not good, it would have been much more difficult to build the roof."

"I remember that Hunter built this house himself. He was quite capable, but he didn't have any descendants, so his craftsmanship was lost."

"He always keeps to himself and doesn't interact with the villagers. When I was young, I wanted to learn hunting from him, but he ignored me." Yan Musheng said aggrievedly. Yan Bingsheng laughed at the side, "You are not the only one who wants to learn from him. He ignores everyone." As he was laughing, he almost stepped on empty air. He stumbled and sat down with his butt, breaking two wooden boards. Fortunately, Yan Musheng supported him in time, otherwise he would have fallen.

Both of them were sweating with fear. "Be careful. You can't afford to fall at your age."

Zhou was also startled when she heard the noise downstairs, "Old man, what's wrong? Are you okay?" She stepped back and looked at the roof.

"It's okay, just weave it quickly, it will be laid out this afternoon."

Seeing the three people hiding on the roof, Zhou felt relieved and went back to weaving her straw curtains.

There were three rooms, and a lot of wood strips had to be removed. After they had removed all the wood strips, they began to re-arrange the shelves. They didn't go home for dinner. Tian brought the meal over. Her father-in-law had agreed to send her two extra meals that morning. After they finished eating, Tian packed up her things and went back. She had originally wanted to stay and help weave the curtains, but Zhou said it was almost done and asked her to go back to watch over the wood. Now those things were more important.

"Tomorrow when we have time, we have to dig up some dirt and make some bricks. The weather has been good these past few days, so it's easy to dry them. We'll probably need them to build the toilet and kitchen, and some areas of this house will need to be filled in."

"Mom, Dad said the same thing this morning," Da He said as he sorted the wood. "He originally said he would let you do it today, but then he also said that after we finish this one today, the whole family can work together on it tomorrow."

Chunxiao looked at the people working on the roof and said, "Dad, I want to build a thatched shed in this yard. I can put things in it when the time comes, even if it rains. Is that okay?"

"Your uncle Mu Sheng and Wang Zu are here. They are good at setting up sheds. Please ask them and see if they are willing to help you." Yan Bingfa looked at his old friend with a smile.

"I say you're being disrespectful. You're destroying my business in front of my niece." He glanced at Chunxiao below. "How big a shed do you want?"

"Uncle Mu Sheng, can I have a slightly bigger one?"

"Sure, of course. It's just that it's not cost-effective to use wood for something this big. Tomorrow we'll go up the mountain and cut some big bamboos, and then we'll use them to build you a house."
