Chapter 163: Staying Overnight

When Chunxiao and the others returned, Shijiu and the others had not returned yet. They must have gone out to buy something. She thought about it and took Xiaohua to the county government office to get the three horses registered.

Now she has five horses and five carriages. With a few more, she can form a team. She is very happy.

Most of the tools in the blacksmith shop were already completed, and their four carriages could hold them all. This trip saved them the money for renting a carriage. They took their things and drove the carriages back to the farm.

After Chunxiao returned, she decided not to wait any longer and took her people away three days later. She called back several managers, held a meeting, and gave the remaining 400 taels of silver for the tools to Ersan.

"We still need to dig wells in the spring. Even though we can't dig that many, we definitely need to dig 20 wells in this area. 15 wells in the walled village and five in the suburbs. You've met a few well diggers before, so you need to make arrangements for this."

Chunxiao took out a banknote from her pocket and gave it to Twelve Sister-in-law, fifteen hundred taels. "It should be enough to pay for the well digging and the workers' wages until the harvest. Twelve Sister-in-law, keep it."

Then he gave Ersan another 1,500 taels, "You don't need that much there, but you're the chief dispatcher, so you need to have a little more on hand so you can provide timely support if something happens."

The two men's hands were shaking a little when they held so much money. They had never seen so much money in their lives. "Don't worry, Boss. I will definitely take care of the accounts."

Chunxiao gave the last 1,000 taels to Xia Shiyi and said, "When the house is built, ask Ersan and the others to come and inspect it, and then settle the payment. After everything is done, buy 10 cows. This money will be enough."

After everyone collected their money, she went over the precautions for cotton planting with them again, leaving a few more for them. "When you leave, take one of the carriages away and leave it here for your convenience."

"Boss, there are ox carts available at the farm."

"A carriage is fast and convenient. You need to travel back and forth frequently, so you can't do without a carriage. Just remember to take good care of it." Finally, Ersan drove away a carriage.

When Nineteenth came, she brought cloth and cotton, but she didn't use them. She didn't plan to take them all away, so she left them here to make clothes for them. She took five pieces of cloth, needle and thread, and 100 kilograms of cotton with her.

"Boss, please wear your hat, it's very windy on this road."

We could have sat comfortably in the carriage, but now there are only three of us, and each of us has to drive a carriage. It will take six days to get to the next county, Wen County, and we have to find an inn in a small town to stay overnight on the way.

The first day went smoothly, but it was really cold after a day's journey. After they rested in the small town, Chunxiao went to the clothing store and bought a cotton cloak for each of them. She also bought three pairs of gloves so that they would not be afraid even if there was wind.

Not long after they started running the next day, it started snowing. Chunxiao was a little confused. It snowed on the day they were traveling. Was this trying to go against her?

Nineteen looked at the weather. The snow was falling very heavily. He was a little worried. "Boss, should we go back to the previous town? It will be night before we reach the next stop. If it keeps snowing like this, we might get stuck on the road."

"We've come a long way, how can we go back? Let's see how it goes. If we come across a village, we can find a farmer's house to rest."

At 3 p.m. in the afternoon, they arrived at a village. The snow on the road had accumulated quite thickly, and the carriage had started to slip. They really couldn't go any further. If they were stuck on the road with no village or shop nearby, they might freeze to death on the road. Although they had put a quilt in the carriage just in case, there was no telling when the snow would stop.

They entered the village and asked several families, but none of them would let them stay overnight. Finally, they asked a woman's house. The woman saw that the three of them were covered in snow, and the carriage was also covered in snow, so she hesitated and opened the gate of the yard.

"The horse will probably have to go through the back door and into the cattle pen at the back. The car will have to be parked in the backyard, otherwise there's no place for it to rest up here."

A few people drove the car to the backyard. There was indeed a relatively large cattle shed at the back with straw underneath, but it was now empty.

"I raised pigs before the New Year, and I bought some to pay off my debts during the Spring Festival, so I have some free space now." The woman smiled shyly. "Isn't it safe to park the car in the yard if it gets snowed on?"

"It's okay, thank you sister-in-law for taking us in."

"It's only natural to help when you encounter difficulties on this journey. I don't deserve your thanks. But as you can see from our family, this is the only condition. You can just make do with me and eat with me when the time comes."

The door to the backyard suddenly opened, and a boy of eight or nine years old ran over. "Mom, I just saw a horse." He saw the horse in the shed and said, "Mom, there really is a horse."

He wanted to go closer to take a look, but the woman stopped him, "Don't be naughty, that's the guest's horse. It's snowing outside, why are you running out? Aren't you cold? Go back inside." She turned around and locked the backyard door, checked again, and then took them into the house.

"I only have two rooms here. Since there are three of you here today, how about this? Big brother, you sleep in one room with my child, and the two girls sleep in one room with me."

Chunxiao looked around the room. It was probably where two women and their child slept before. Although there was a bed in the empty room, there was nothing on it.

"It's just that I don't have any extra blankets for you here."

"We have three quilts in the car." Xiaohua and Shijiu went to the backyard to get quilts. There were two quilts on the woman's bed, so Chunxiao used one as a cushion and two as quilts. When the two children at home heard that they were going to sleep with a strange uncle today, they were reluctant at first, but then they went to the room and touched the quilts and immediately agreed.

"Mom, their quilts are so fragrant and soft."
