When the sun wasn't so strong and the mounds weren't unusual, she took the opportunity to go out and start collecting the wood that had been drying in the sun back into the shed. She checked the fire every two times until she had all the wood piles back. She then concentrated on guarding the mounds.
Fire started to come out of the vents at the bottom, so she quickly blocked them with mud. By the time the sun went down, all eight vents were blocked.
Chunxiao looked at the time and it was time to go back for dinner. To be honest, she didn't want to leave at the moment, but if she didn't go to eat, Zhou would definitely ask someone to call her again. She looked at the top of the door and it would probably take some time to seal it, so she hurriedly washed her hands, locked the door, and hurried to the village.
When we arrived at my eldest brother's house, Zhou had already started to complain, "Why don't you pay attention to the time for dinner? You should come before the sun sets, and come early every day."
"Mom, I forgot for a moment," she smiled, "Mom, I have to eat quickly, there is something going on over there, I can't wait until I get back late.
"Why are you in such a hurry?" Yan Dashan said dissatisfiedly, "Even when your parents were waiting for you to eat, they weren't as anxious as you."
"Something's really going on!"
"My little sister said she had something to do, so it must be her business. Come, help me put the dishes on the table and let's eat."
Chunxiao helped Tian bring the food to the table, and when everyone started to eat, she hurriedly began to eat.
"Slow down, what are you in such a hurry for?"
Chunxiao looked up and said, "Dad, I'm doing an experiment. You'll know later."
"Aunt, what is an experiment?" Shuwen looked at her curiously while eating porridge.
“An experiment is when you want to make something, but you don’t know if you can do it well. You have to try various methods. This process of trying is called experimentation.”
Shuwen said "Oh" to indicate that he understood.
"My little sister is the most learned person in our family now." Tian looked at her with some envy, "She knows so much."
"I'm just thinking about it, otherwise I'd be doing nothing." She quickly finished her porridge. "Mom, I won't wash today. Anyway, I live by myself and I don't despise myself. I'm leaving first."
Seeing her hurriedly get off the table and run away, Zhou said, "This is even more unruly. Are you in such a hurry to reincarnate?" She cursed angrily and looked at Tian. "I'll wash the dishes later."
"You and Dad are the ones who made her unruly. I don't think any girl in this village is as lucky as Chunxiao."
"Don't bother with her so much. It's only good for a short time."
"Dad, I don't mean anything else. Please don't think too much. She is my sister. Just spoil her."
Chunxiao rushed home to check the fire. Sure enough, the roof was ablaze. She quickly covered it with wet mud and patched up the cracks. All the holes were sealed, meaning the job of guarding the house was complete.
She washed her hands. It was getting dark, but going to bed so early would be a waste of time. She thought that if the charcoal was burned successfully, she would build a fire in the backyard and burn it at night. That way, no one would disturb her and she could burn it as long as she wanted.
She lit the lamp in the main room. Without pen and paper, it was difficult to make plans. This afternoon, when she returned home for dinner, she returned the axe. She needed tools for work at all times. They lent it to her out of favor, and if she didn't return it, they wouldn't lend it to her again. If she ever made money, buying more tools would be her top priority.
There was nothing to do. Sitting there was not only a waste of fuel but also cold. She had no choice but to undress and get into bed, wrapped in the quilt. She had originally planned to go up the mountain tomorrow to cut some bamboo to build a rack in the yard to dry the quilts. She had promised her eldest brother to help harvest soybeans and she couldn't break her promise. She would see if she could come back early tomorrow afternoon to lie down on the mountain. Chopping two bamboos was also very quick.
She tossed and turned in bed for a long time and finally fell asleep.
The next morning, she woke up early again. The first thing she did was to go to the backyard to look at the mound of earth. She touched it and it was still warm. After washing up, she locked the door and went to her parents' house. When she arrived, everyone was ready to go out.
The Yan family owned a total of 5 mu (approximately 1.5 acres) of land. When the family divided up, the eldest son received 3 mu and the second son received 2 mu. The beans were planted around the same time, so they were harvested together. Harvesting the beans involved cutting all the soybean branches, drying them in the sun, and then pounding them with bamboo shovels to thresh the beans.
"We don't have that many machetes in this house. Your father, Dashan and I will be in charge of cutting the soybeans, Chunxiao, you and your sister-in-law will be in charge of bundling them. You guys should pick up the soybeans that have fallen on the ground, okay?"
"I understand, Grandma."
"We have finished collecting the trash here. If your second brother and the others haven't finished collecting the trash, you can help your second brother collect the trash later." After assigning the tasks, the family went out in a mighty manner.
Although it was early, there were still many people on the road. "You are also going to harvest beans."
"Yes, have you collected it yet?"
"It started yesterday, and it should be finished today after another day of harvesting."
Such conversations continued on the road. By the time the family arrived at the field, the two acres of land next to them had been harvested.
"Auntie Pang's family cleared out the beans yesterday. I even helped them pick up beans."
"Mom, it would be great if we had a cart, so we wouldn't have to wait and carry bundles of things home." Dashan made a wish in the field.
"Of course it's good to have a cart, but I also want an oxcart. But that still requires money, and the wheels are not cheap. If you work harder in the future, maybe you can get one."
"I can't see the end of this. I'm lucky enough to be able to raise these three safely."
"Your father and I weren't as good as we are now, but we still raised the three of you. Life is something we have to endure, so don't get discouraged. There's a saying in the countryside: the more discouraged you are, the more discouraged you become. You must remember this."
