Chunxiao first went to a clothing store in the county town and bought a set of rather expensive clothes for her and Shuwen.
Since the private house was so famous, they should dress better. What if the doorman was just looking down on them and they were rejected for nothing? It would be unfair. After buying the clothes, she went to the jewelry store to buy a hairpin and earrings.
"Auntie, aren't we going to the academy? If you don't know us, you might think we're going to do something if we dress like this."
Chun Xiao was asking the jeweler to change his crown. "Don't say anything yet, let me take a look." Chun Xiao looked at him. "He really looks like a young gentleman in this outfit. Second brother, keep the crown like this. Don't take it off. Let's settle the money."
The waiter happily led them to the counter. He would be happy to receive 100 such straightforward customers even if they came in a day.
"Auntie, it's really beautiful?"
"You'll know if you look in the mirror yourself. There's a bronze mirror over there." Chunxiao went to the counter to pay, and when she came back she saw him grinning foolishly into the mirror. "They say people need clothes and Buddhas need gold ornaments. It's true. If you go back dressed like this, Haitang won't be able to wait until the eighth day of the eighth month to marry you."
"Auntie, please stop joking. Are we really dressed like this just to go to the academy?"
"Of course, we're just going to the academy. I'm afraid they might be snobbish, so if we act rich and respectable, they won't turn us away before we even get in. Let's go and meet them. If we can get this done, Xiaoqi and the others won't have to worry anymore."
Chunxiao asked along the way and finally arrived at the place at 1:00 PM. A plaque hung on the doorway that read "Congwenguan". They knocked on the wooden door. A few moments later, an elderly man came to open it and saw them. "Who are you looking for?"
Yan Shuwen stepped forward and said, "Old man, we are here for my younger brother's education. I wonder if your school is hiring now. We have admired your school for a long time."
Seeing the visitor's polite words, the old man stroked his beard and said, "Wait a minute, I'm just a doorman. I'll go ask for you."
When the door closed, Chunxiao came forward and said, "Yes, you are more steady and talkative now than before."
"Aunt, I've been managing the farm for several years now. You really underestimate me."
"I just feel sorry. If I had this opportunity a few years earlier, you might have studied and become a scholar now."
"It's enough for a scholar to have one in his family. I'm fine now, aunt. I feel free to manage Zhuangzi, and I can travel around. I've seen things in recent years that I never thought of before, so don't feel sorry for him. If it were in the past, I might have felt sorry, but now I don't feel that way at all."
"You really don't know how to do it at all?"
"I really can't, aunt. If I want to study, I can study now. Although I'm a little older, as long as we are willing to spend money and find a good teacher to teach me at home, I can also learn. But there is no need for that."
"It's better to study in a school with others encouraging each other." Chunxiao took the opportunity to look around the house while the gateman was calling for help. The yard was not big compared to the previous school. The green bamboos in the yard had grown outwards a lot, and the door panels were a bit old. But it was this kind of atmosphere that made her feel that there was some fragrance of books, which was strange.
Soon, the doorman came and said that the director wanted them in.
Chunxiao followed Shuwen into the door, and after entering, she found a different world. There was a large green grassy area beside the inner corridor. It should be the time for the library to close, and many people were lying there in groups of three or four, reading books or chatting.
It looked like a playground in my previous life. There was even a small fish pond at the end, and there were people fishing there. This house looked small, but it was surprisingly spacious inside.
The concierge led them to a pavilion. "Please wait a moment, the curator will be here shortly."
"Aunt, this is my first time in the academy, and I didn't know the director looks like this." Shuwen was a little surprised.
"Thanks to Xiaoqi, this is my first time too. It's like this here, I wonder if it's the same elsewhere?"
"Aunt, the yard you built there is also big, but I always feel that it is not as quiet and peaceful as this one."
Chunxiao rolled her eyes for the first time. That was natural. Her place had just been built, and except for the newly planted green plants, everything was bare. How could it compare to here? The grassy lawn here was enough for her to envy. But there was no rush. It wouldn't be far to wait four or five years before coming back to compare.
As they were talking, a middle-aged man in his thirties or forties, wearing a hat and a beard, came over and said, "I heard that you two are here today to ask your son to study."
Chunxiao and Shuwen hurriedly stood up and bowed to the visitor, "Hello, Director."
"Sit down and talk." The man gestured for them to sit down. "My surname is Zhuang, and I'm Shan Ziyan. I'm the director of this Congwen Academy. Since you're here to study, and you're familiar with the academy's rules, why don't you let me talk first?"
Chunxiao and Shuwen were both stunned. Rules, what rules? They really didn't know.
"Director, we came here in a hurry and only wanted to send our son to a good school. We don't know the rules of your school. Could you tell us something?" Chunxiao asked with a guilty conscience. It turned out that he was not prepared enough. However, when he inquired for information before, no one mentioned any rules.
Seeing that the director surnamed Zhuang's eyes changed from bright to lonely, her heart began to beat faster.
"Director Zhuang, please be so kind as to tell me the admission requirements." Shuwen also realized that the matter might be difficult to handle.
Zhuang Yan looked at the two of them and asked, "What is your relationship with the two of you? Who is the child you are sending?"
This got to the point. Shuwen looked at Chunxiao and gave the initiative to her.
