Chapter 3: There is only divorce, no divorce

When Chunxiao waited for Zhou Hongzhi, it was already dark.

Zhou Hongzhi walked in holding an oil lamp and placed it on the desk. He glanced at Chunxiao lying on the bed and said, "Don't you have something to tell me? Go ahead." He looked as if he was listening attentively.

Chun Xiao had already mentally encouraged herself. Seeing Zhou Hongzhi, she didn't want to drag things out any longer. "Husband, let's get a divorce! You compensate me with a few taels of silver and return the quilt I brought with me, and we'll be even."

Zhou Hongzhi was stunned for a moment, thinking he had misheard. "What did you say? Say it again."

Chunxiao said what he had just said, neither humble nor arrogant.

Zhou Hongzhi suddenly laughed. "Did you have a fever that damaged your brain or are you just confused? Do you know what you said? I told you I won't divorce you. You don't have to worry about it. You only know how to think nonsense. If I had known this would happen, I should have listened to my mother and got up to work."

"Zhou Hongzhi, I told you I want a divorce. Do you not understand me or are you pretending not to understand?" Chun Xiao was already full of anger, and when he provoked her, she vented it without hesitation.

Zhou Hongzhi was a little confused by her yelling. He didn't remember Chunxiao ever speaking to him so loudly before. He was also furious. "It seems like you didn't listen to a word I said to you this afternoon. It was a waste of my time going to the Xu Mansion to plead for you, Yan Chunxiao. Are you really going to force me to divorce you? If I really divorce you, I won't care how miserable your life will be in the future." He had never seen such an ungrateful person.

"Zhou Hongzhi, divorce is impossible. What I want is a divorce. I have worked in your Zhou family for four years to support your studies. It is not too much to compensate me with a few taels of silver." Since they want a divorce, they will fall out sooner or later. She has to find a way to gain the greatest benefit for herself.

Zhou Hongzhi was furious when he heard her say this. "Yan Chunxiao, how dare you ask for a divorce and even want money? You have no children after marriage. Just based on this, you have committed one of the seven grounds for divorce. No one will say anything if I divorce you based on this alone. Don't force me to do this."

Chunxiao looked at him and sneered, "You've only been married for four years, how can you say you're childless? Just because you passed the imperial examination, you want to change your wife into a concubine and marry someone else. I just need to report it to the county government and I can take away your imperial title. I want to see if the Xu family will still look down on you after you lose your imperial title." In fact, Chunxiao didn't know if anyone would pay attention to her situation if she reported it to the county government, but now was the time to speak harshly, no matter how serious the words were. Scholars valued their own imperial titles the most.

Zhou Hongzhi was instantly like a beast being strangled, his rage subdued. He was actually a little scared. Chunxiao was right. They had only been married four years, and divorcing her for not having children was a bit untenable. He would certainly feel guilty about marrying someone else, so a confrontation wasn't the right time. He suppressed his anger and walked over to the bed to sit down.

"Chunxiao, I know you are angry, but that's not the way to say it in anger. Tell me, how are you going to live if you really leave me? Your elder brother and second brother have separated, and your parents live with your elder brother. If you leave me, do you have to live with your elder brother too? Have you ever thought about this?" After saying this, he was about to hold her hand.

Chun Xiao saw his actions and gave him a look of disgust, putting her hands behind her back. "I don't need to worry about how you're going to live after the divorce. All I ask for is a divorce letter, five taels of silver, and the return of the quilt. Whether you marry the Miss Xu or the Miss Zhang is none of my business."

Seeing her determination, Zhou Hongzhi's heart sank and he lost his patience all of a sudden, "Yan Chunxiao, are you really going to be so ruthless?" She knew that he needed money to get married, but she still wanted to step on him at this critical moment. How come he didn't know that she was such a person before.

"Was it me or your family who did this? If I stay in your house as a concubine, what's the difference between me and a servant you bought, Zhou Hongzhi? Even if I'm not smart, I'm not stupid. Your plan to treat me like a fool is probably going to fail." Chun Xiao's tone was extremely sarcastic. "My parents are coming tomorrow. If you don't want your mess to be known to everyone, it's best to do as I say. I've taken what I deserve, and you don't have to chase me away. I'll leave tomorrow. If you don't want to save face, I'm not afraid. I'll accompany you to the end."

"You!" Zhou Hongzhi hadn't expected Chunxiao, who usually shied away from speaking loudly, to suddenly become so assertive. He was so angry he couldn't utter a single word. He muttered "you" for a long time without finishing the rest of the sentence. Perhaps today's events had truly exceeded his expectations, leaving him at a loss for words. He shook his sleeves, muttered "That's unreasonable," and walked out the door with the oil lamp in hand. The door slammed shut behind him.

Chun Xiao couldn't have asked for more. If she were to sleep in the same room with Zhou Hongzhi today, she would probably have a sleepless night. Soon, she heard the sounds of an argument and the smashing of things from the next room. Her mother-in-law must have been scolding her profusely. Although the room wasn't big, the soundproofing was good, so she couldn't hear the scolding. She put on her shoes, got out of bed, and locked the door from the inside. She wanted to get a good night's sleep tonight. She couldn't worry about what would happen next. She just wanted to go back to her dreams. If she couldn't go back, she didn't want to continue like this anymore. She was determined to get a divorce.

The commotion in the next room lasted for a long time before finally quieting down. Chunxiao was only thankful that although this family was shameless, fortunately they had no violent tendencies. Otherwise, with her talk back today, she would have been beaten up. In fact, she was not sleepy at the moment. How could she sleep after lying in bed all day? It was just that Zhou Hongzhi took the light with him when he left. In the dark, she could not do anything. She lay in bed, thinking about the five taels of silver she had just asked for. There were probably more than ten taels of cash in the family. She had saved them bit by bit by working day and night to grow crops and vegetables, raise pigs and chickens. Zhou Hongzhi spent seven or eight taels of silver every year just for his studies. It was not easy to save up this money. She deserved the five taels, but whether the Zhou family was willing to give it to her was another matter.
