Chapter 35: Teaching the Naughty Child a Lesson

Yan Bingfa frowned. "This is indeed a problem, but we can't just use the money we earned. Buying land is a serious matter, so we must use the money."

"Dad, let's just say we borrowed it from my aunt. They don't know anything about my aunt's situation anyway, and no one will go and ask, right?"

"That won't work. Your aunt is extremely poor, and many people in the village know about it. This lie won't hold up."

"Dad, just say that I took the money." Chunxiao stood up. "They won't come and ask me. As for where the money came from, let them guess whatever they want." Most of them would gossip about how much money she extorted from her husband's family.

Yan Bangfa felt that this was the only way, and it wasn't a lie. It all depended on what the villagers thought.

"Dad, wait for me. Buying land is a big deal. I'd better go ask my wife." Daha said as he went to the kitchen. Dashan saw him and followed him.

"Look, the men in our family all love their wives. If it were in other families, they would make the decision themselves, why would they ask women for help?" Zhou looked at Yan Bingfa. "Just talking about buying land, you're so happy that you can't even find a place to put your wrinkles!"

"Of course I'm happy. Our family has only 5 mu of land so far, and now we have to buy 8 mu. My heart is pounding. If you don't believe me, just feel it."

"I'm touching your head, you big ghost." Zhou looked at Chunxiao embarrassedly, "What nonsense are you talking about in front of my daughter?"

Chunxiao laughed, "Dad is really happy. Dad, there are so many more fields. Will we be able to handle it when spring comes?"

"If we can't handle a few more days of work, won't we hire someone? I just don't know what the land situation is like in this village. It would be better if we could buy 8 mu of land together."

"Dad!" Yan Dahe came over and handed him the silver ingot. "Just buy two more acres. Next year, we can eat fine noodles and rice like Chunxiao."

Dashan also came out and gave him the silver.

"Okay, okay." Yan Bingfa held the four silver ingots, his eyes moist. "I'll keep the money first. I'll go to the headman this afternoon to ask about the land."

"Look how excited Dad is! My wife wasn't this excited even when I showed her just now. I gave away this rare silver ingot before I even warmed it up." Dahe lamented, "Chunxiao, when can you get another one for your brother? I'll keep it safe next time and definitely not take it out."

Chun Xiao spread his hands and said, "How can I be that capable? I still have some small change before the New Year, but don't even dream of getting this big ingot."

"Silver coins are rare," Da He laughed. "When we kill the pig, I'll leave you 50 pounds. I'll give it to you, no money required."

"You are being generous now." Zhou nodded his head.

Chunxiao took out the things she had bought this morning and said, "Mother, I bought four peach wood hairpins, and silk flowers for Shufeng and her two sisters-in-law. I haven't bought Shuwen's book yet, though. I don't have any change this morning, so I'll buy it for her when we go to the market."

"He's just talking, but you're really planning to buy it? A book costs several taels of silver." Dashan took a peach wood hairpin and said, "Just a piece of wood for a hundred coins. Wow, it's too easy to make money."

This is a straight man. Chun Xiao glanced at him and said, "Brother, you must do what you promised the child. If you said you would buy it, you must buy it. Don't worry about how many taels, as long as you promised, you must buy more than ten taels." She took the hairpin back from his hand and said, "This is a gift from me to my sister-in-law, not from you. After all these years of marriage, what have you given to your sister-in-law?"

Yan Dashan was embarrassed. He had never given Tian anything before. "We are already an old married couple. What can I give her? She manages the money. She can just buy whatever she wants."

Chunxiao rolled her eyes and said no more, as it would be like talking to a cow.

"Why haven't the little ones come back yet?"

"I usually go out to play and come back when it's time to eat. Today is strange too. You guys sit here, I'll go out and take a look."

Chunxiao watched Yan Dahe get up and leave. She took a wooden hairpin and measured it on Zhou's hair. "Mother, let me do a new bun for you. A nice bun."

"Why wear your hair in a bun at your age? Just wear it up and don't let it fall apart. You're on your own now, so you should take care of yourself." The two ignored the father and son beside them and gestured at each other with their wooden hairpins. Chunxiao took the hairpins to the kitchen and gave them to her two sisters-in-law. Tian and Zhang were naturally delighted.

After the buns were steamed, Dahe returned with the children. However, they were all covered in mud, even on their faces and hair. Tian was furious when she saw this and went up to lecture them, "I gave you new clothes and you treat them like this. You've only worn them for a day and they've become like this. I think you're only fit to wear old clothes."

"What's wrong? Where did they roll in the mud? Why is Pan'er so dirty?" Zhou pulled them to her side, feeling very distressed.

When the children heard this, all of them started crying except Shuwen.

"What's going on?" Chunxiao asked Dahai.

"I don't know. They were like this when I went there. They stood on the riverbank and refused to come back. I almost took action, so they followed me back."

Chunxiao pulled Shuwen and said, "Shuwen, tell your aunt what's going on."

Shuwen finally shed tears of grievance and threw herself into Chunxiao's arms. "Aunt, we were having fun together, but Erniu and his friends saw us wearing new clothes and started throwing mud at us. He also scolded you, saying that you did something shameful and were divorced by your husband's family. You're a woman no one else wants, but we're the ones who treasure you. We were so angry that we started fighting, and that's how it all turned out. We didn't get our clothes dirty on purpose."
