Chapter 52: Money

When Yan Laowu came over with his cart, he saw the Yan family, young and old, working hard with hoes in the open fenced field. He opened the fence gate and said, "Bingfa, your tables and chairs are ready. I brought them to you."

The father and his sons then noticed that Yan Laowu had arrived. Yan Bangfa hurriedly took Chunxiao and threw away the hoe and ran over.

"Fifth brother, you are really fast." Yan Bingfa helped him push the cart, and Chunxiao went over and called him Fifth Uncle.

Several people pushed the car into the yard.

"We only have two buckets left. Bring them here first. Where should we put them?" The two men worked together to unload the things. Yan Laowu saw the five children squatting in the main room and asked, "What are Shuwen and the others doing?"

"Fifth Grandpa, we are picking seeds for Auntie."

"Uncle Wu, this table and chairs should be placed in my room." Chunxiao pointed towards the room.

The two men moved the table in, and Chunxiao brought the chair in. Then they came out and took the bucket into the utility room.

Yan Laowu stood in the main hall and watched the children picking out seeds. "What kind of seeds are these? Why do we have to pick them out? When we plant wheat, we just spread them all over the place. It saves trouble."

Chunxiao brought him a stool and said, "My land is idle anyway, so I discussed with my father about planting some cotton. Uncle Wu, please sit down."

Yan Laowu took a stool and sat at the door of the main hall. "The soil here is average. It would be good to grow something here." Obviously, he was not very optimistic about the cotton harvest.

Yan Bingfa looked at his cart and said, "Fifth brother, my family wants to buy an ox later. Can you make this ox cart?"

"Are you going to buy a cow?" Yan Laowu was a little surprised. A cow would cost at least ten taels of silver. Everyone in the village said that Yan Bingfa's family had a secret, but he didn't expect it to be true. Thinking of this, he looked into the house again.

"Chunxiao has such a large piece of land. We also have land over there. If we don't buy it, we'll have to rent it when we can't do it. It's better to bite the bullet and buy it ourselves. A cow can save a lot of trouble. It will also make it more convenient to go to town."

Yan Laowu nodded. "If you can afford it, it would be great if you could buy it. I can make an oxcart, but making the wheels is very troublesome and will probably take a lot of time, so the price will be higher."

Yan Bingfa smiled and said, "Your price is always fair. If you can do it, it's fine."

"I still owe you a lot of things. There are still six buckets. Didn't you say before that you wanted to make a big bathtub? Now with this ox cart, I don't know if I can finish it before the New Year."

"It's okay. We're not that anxious about this cart. The cows haven't come back yet. We can make it after the New Year. But the wheels must be made stronger."

"Don't worry about that." Yan Laowu came up to him and said, "Bingfa, tell me what kind of business your family is in. Yesterday I saw the oxcart that delivered the wood last time leave your side, but the cart was covered tightly and moved so fast that nothing could be seen. Could it be that you also make wooden products? I remember you chopped down a lot of wood some time ago."

"Fifth brother, if we knew how to make wooden items, we wouldn't let you do everything. We don't have your craftsmanship," Yan Bingfa's eyes were evasive, and he was obviously feeling guilty.

Now the suspicions in the village are increasing. She will have to dig a well soon. If she doesn't give an explanation, all kinds of rumors will come out. Although it won't have much impact if they ignore it, if she can give an explanation, no one will ask about it all the time.

Chunxiao thought for a moment. "Fifth Uncle, I know the villagers are suspicious of our family's sudden lavish spending. Since you asked, and since you're one of us, it's okay for me to tell you. I was in a very bad mood a few days after I got back from He Li, so my father took me to the mountains, saying he wanted to pick some wild fruits for me. I don't know if it was just luck or fate, but I actually found some old Ganoderma lucidum in the mountains. I was originally going to sell it at the town's medicine store, but coincidentally, a man from the city came to the countryside looking for Ganoderma lucidum that day, so I sold it to him at a high price and made a fortune that way."

Although Yan Laowu felt that what she said contained too many coincidences, he also felt that it was reasonable. Otherwise, how could their family suddenly become rich?

"You know, I was cutting wood a while ago. I had a lot of things to make for my new home, and the villagers complained, so I thought I'd buy some from outside. But some of the wood was infested with worms, so I found a buyer and returned it. That's what you see on the oxcart that brought it in and took it away." Chun Xiao sighed. "I was originally trying to save money on materials, but I decided against it. Your price was fair, so I saved some money after all."

"So that's how it is." Yan Laowu smiled. "Why didn't you tell me earlier? Now everyone in the village is saying that your family is quietly making a fortune, and everyone is asking about it. But you are a lucky girl. Over the years, countless people have gone into the mountains, and you are the only one who picked Ganoderma lucidum. I think it must be God's will."

"My father said the same thing." Chun Xiao smiled innocently. "The money will eventually run out. I wanted to have something to rely on, so I bought this wasteland. It will at least bring in some income."

"You're right." He looked up at the sky. "Okay, I won't delay your work anymore. I'm going back."

The father and daughter walked him out of the fence.

Yan Bing laughed and looked at Chun Xiao, "I found that you are quite good at lying. I almost believed it when I heard it from the side."

"Dad, I have no other choice. If this matter continues to ferment, it will become a big deal."

"What if everyone listens to you and runs to the mountains to look for Ganoderma lucidum?"

"What can we do?" Chun Xiao spread his hands. "If everyone could find it, everyone would be rich. If they can't find it a few times, they'll naturally give up."

Yan Bingfa shook his head, and the two of them went back to prepare the land.

Days passed one by one. On December 20, Yan Bingfa followed Dashan to the town to sell charcoal. When he came back in the afternoon, he brought back a strong cow. All the villagers ran to Dashan's house to watch the fun.
