Chapter 82: Rectifying Zhuangzi

There were several storehouses, and except for this one with some seeds left, the others were empty. They went to the kitchen, which was even bigger than hers. It had a row of four stoves and eight pots, all still there. Opposite was a row of tables for cutting and placing vegetables. The knives had been taken away, leaving behind a few large vegetable bowls, but also no oil, salt, sauce, or vinegar. Chunxiao noted that from the kitchen were two firewood rooms. The firewood rooms were large, filled with cotton stalks and wheat straw, which they usually used for cooking.

"There's a lot of firewood stalks piled up in the vacant lot where we live."

Next up is the toilet, also known as the thatched house.

"Is there no well in this house?" Chunxiao didn't notice it, but she thought it was impossible.

"Yes, there's one in the open space next to the kitchen, right next to the wall. I saw it." Dahe pointed in a direction. "Do you want me to take you to see it?"

"Boss, I have never been to the back of this main house, so I don't know about this," Wang Shiwen smiled awkwardly.

They looked around the yard carefully and found one on the side of the east fourth room.

"This well is built right to the side, unlike ours which is right in the yard and visible from the outside." Tian said with a sigh, "This house is well built. It's large and beautiful. The corridors also use a lot of wooden pillars. If this were really built, it would probably cost one or two hundred taels of silver."

Dashan nodded and said, "Of course, our house cost almost 100 taels."

"This farm is really worth buying." Yan Bingfa now feels that the 1,350 taels are well worth it.

"Wang Shiwen, besides this main courtyard, are there any other wells in the land?"

"Yes, yes. There are four wells in the field inside, two deep wells, and three wells in the field outside. There are seven wells in all."

"Don't ask him. We haven't even checked the fields yet. We just took a quick glance when we came in. We can just go and check it out ourselves." Zhou Chunxiao was about to go back to the front when Wang Shiwen pointed to the side. "There's a side door over there. They often go out through this side door. It leads to the fields right outside. It's more convenient than going out through the front yard."

As expected, they spotted a side door. It had originally been padlocked, but now it was gone. Exiting the door revealed a vast expanse of fields and, in the distance, a row of thatched houses. "What are those houses used for?" Chunxiao asked.

"That's where the little people live."

"Come on, let's go for a walk in the fields. Is there any other door in the outer wall besides the one in front of the main courtyard?"

“Yes, there are two more doors.”

A group of people walked into the field and looked around. One side of the field was planted with soybeans, which had already grown a large branch, but most of the field was empty, probably where cotton was planted before. She finally saw the well in the field and looked over. The first thing she saw was a deep well. They looked inside the field, then walked along the wall. At the corner, they saw a door. They opened the door and walked around outside, then finally entered from the other side and continued walking.

"This place is huge, and walking is difficult. It would take us half an hour just to walk around. I don't think more than 20 people can accomplish anything. We need to find someone else."

"There are more than 250 acres of land. If there are more than 20 people, each person has to take care of 10 acres. That's not feasible." Dashan calculated and came to the same conclusion as her mother: they had to find someone.

"How many cows does Zhuangzi usually have working there?" The cattle pen was very large, so there should be quite a few cows.

"Eight in total."

Only eight? She thought that with so much land, there would be at least ten cows. Now there were only two, so she had to find a way to buy more cows.

"Who else does the work besides you?"

"There's another group of servants brought by the stewards, but they do menial work. It's mainly us and about ten villagers from Deer Village."

"But the tenants?"

"Not really. Other farms have tenants who sell their land out, but we don't. We just hire people for 20 wen a day when we're busy. Just now, the master said that one person can't take care of 10 mu. We really don't have one person to take care of 10 mu when we farm. We each take care of 8 mu, and we hire villagers to do the rest. After the crops are planted, it's almost one person taking care of 10 mu."

This is really treating people like cattle.

"I've almost finished looking at the land. Take me to see where you live." Chunxiao looked at the row of houses in the middle of the land.

When they got closer, they found that there was an open space in front of the house. Just as he had said before, it was full of cotton stalks. The people who were originally sitting in the middle of the field basking in the sun stood up when they saw them coming and stood aside in unison.

"This house is worse than the one we had before." Da He leaned over to him and frowned. "The smell is unbearable."

Chunxiao came over and also smelled a strange smell. She walked to the door of the house and took a look. There was basically nothing in the house except a simple bed. Seeing that they were all dressed thinly, she knew that they did not live a good life. There were not many houses, only about 10. Except for four couples, the other rooms should have three or four people living in one. The quilt was also black and yellow. She took a quick look and came out. Tian just stood aside and pinched her nose.

"What is your daily routine? How are your meals provided?"

"We get up to work at dawn and go to bed at night. Meals are usually porridge with side dishes, which are delivered by servants on time. We take a bath twice a month in the clean room next to the main courtyard." Wang Shiwen hurriedly explained, probably sensing the master's disdain.

Chun Xiao glanced at everyone again and said, "Everyone, follow me to the main courtyard. We're going to have a meeting."

Although everyone didn't know what the meeting meant, since the host had given the order, they had to obey, so a group of people followed Chunxiao.
