Zhou thought about it and said nothing more, "How much did you buy?"
"10 pieces of muslin and 18 pieces of coarse cotton." Of course, the two pieces of new cloth were not included.
"I have six rolls of fine cotton and five rolls of coarse cotton. I'm giving two rolls of fine cotton to my younger sister-in-law for their baby. We have to be prepared if we need to buy someone from our farm. Mother, you don't know how expensive cotton is these days. Old cotton from two years ago cost 58 wen a jin. I've made an agreement with the grocer today to exchange 110 jin of new cotton for 240 jin of old cotton."
"Then this new cotton is worth hundreds of coins, right?"
"That's right."
"Chunxiao, this kind of cotton is the right one to plant. These days, someone has come to our house to ask about cotton seeds. I'm thinking about Chunxiao. If you have any extra cotton on your farm, we should give it to the villagers. How it turns out depends on your luck."
"That's certainly no problem, but if the harvest is poor, you can't blame it on my seeds."
"I think it's better not to. What you're worried about is not impossible. Not all villagers are reasonable. Maybe in the end they will really blame this seed and say that the seed we gave them is not good."
"This?" Zhou hesitated, but she didn't think too much about it.
"Let's talk about this later. It's still early, Mom. Please help me look at the cloth first and pick out the ones I can use myself." There was so much cloth today, and in so many colors: blue, black, gray, red, and yellow. The fine cloth was mostly light-colored.
She calculated in her mind that one bolt of cloth should be enough for three sets of cotton-padded jackets and trousers. Nine bolts of coarse cloth would be enough for one set per person, and eight bolts of bedsheets and quilt covers would be more than enough. With that in mind, she'd bought just the right amount of coarse cloth. Fortunately, she'd gone back and picked out two more bolts, otherwise it might not have been enough, and she wouldn't have had any left. Undergarments should be at least one set per person. Undergarments are single-layered and require less material, so one bolt of cloth could make five or six sets. Five bolts of fine cotton would be enough. Spring clothes could be dealt with later. They should have some thinner clothes, so they could consider that later when their conditions improved.
