"Could it be that we recognized the wrong person?" Shuwen looked at everyone's disappointed and unwilling expressions and asked Chunxiao in a low voice.
"It's always good to have hope. If there is no clue at all, then you should be anxious. Finding people has been difficult since ancient times." It was even more difficult in ancient times.
After failing to find anything on the first day, Chunxiao continued on the second. The weather was already hot, and being outside in the middle of the day was a bit too hot. Chunxiao found a tea stall and sat down. Two ragged children were hiding from the sun near the stall, one telling the other a story. Chunxiao drank her tea, feeling depressed and wondering what to do next. Suddenly, she overheard the children's story and was startled.
She hurriedly walked up to the two children and asked, "Who told you this story?" Her tone was urgent, and to outsiders it sounded more like a scolding.
The two children were frightened. One of them tried to run away by pulling the other, but Chunxiao caught them both.
"Don't be afraid. I just think your stories are interesting and I want to listen to them together." Chun Xiao adjusted her tone. "How about Auntie treat you to tea, okay?"
Chunxiao pulled them to a table and asked the tea stall owner to bring a pot of cold tea and two plates of snacks. She poured tea for the two children and pushed the snacks toward them. "I'm not a bad person. Eat."
When the two children saw the snacks in front of them, they were no longer afraid and picked up the snacks and gobbled them up.
Chunxiao was patient and told herself not to rush. "Where did you hear that story just now? Can you tell your aunt about it?"
The two children stuffed their mouths with food and took a sip of tea. They looked at each other for a long time and then looked at her. "It was, it was heard in the dog hole at Mr. Zhang's house the day before yesterday."
“What does the storyteller look like?”
One of them shook his head. "No, he was so strange, telling stories to the dog. He left before I finished my story."
Chun Xiao was excited. "Where is Mr. Zhang's house? Can you take me to see it?"
The child looked at the food on the table.
"Can you take me there and give all these to you?"
The child nodded happily.
The two children walked along, through several alleys, and brought her to a large house. They then took her to the back of the side wall and pointed to a small hole. "That's where I heard it."
Chunxiao looked at the house. The courtyard wall was very high. She didn't know the character of the owner inside. She didn't dare to act rashly. She thanked the two children, stood for a while, and left quickly.
Now that the person has been found, she has to go find him quickly.
When she returned to the inn, no one had returned yet, so she paced back and forth anxiously. At 3 p.m., the head of the village and Shuwen finally returned, still looking dejected.
Chunxiao stepped forward and said, "Uncle Village Chief, I think I found one of them."
The headman staggered, "Really, really, where is it, Wuzhong or Xiaoqi?" The expression on his face changed very quickly.
"Aunt, who did you find?" Shuwen also sat down excitedly.
Chunxiao shook her head. "I don't know, but it's definitely one of them." She looked at Shuwen. "Do you remember the story of the King Kong Calabash Brothers that Auntie told you? No one has heard this story except you two, but I heard someone tell it today. Maybe Xiaoqi told the story to his classmates, so I'm not sure which one of them it is, but it's definitely one of them."
"Great, great, let's go find someone now." The village head was getting a little impatient.
"Don't be impatient. If we go to their house like this, what if the owner is a reckless person? Something unexpected will happen. Wait for my father and the others to come back, and then we will go to the township government to ask for help. We have an ultimatum, and now we have clues, so we can ask them for help. Don't be impatient."
The three of them waited anxiously in the lobby for the two men, but they didn't come back until the end of the afternoon. The village head was almost anxious to death.
The two knew that they might have found the person, so without saying a word, they took the ultimatum to the township government to find the headman of Qingfeng Town.
When the headman heard about the child being abducted and looked at their official disc, he was willing to cooperate.
"Are you really sure that this person is in Mr. Zhang's house? If you are not sure, we can't rashly send people there. If we go and don't find him, you will be held responsible."
Chunxiao nodded affirmatively, "It's in Mr. Zhang's house. I have the children's portraits here. We can find out by checking." Chunxiao took out the two portraits.
Seeing that she was so sure, the captain said nothing more and asked a leader to lead two officials to take them to Zhang's house.
The housekeeper of the Zhang Mansion was also surprised to see the official. "Sir, I wonder what brings you here so late at night?"
It was dinner time. The Zhang family was eating in the dining room. When they heard that the officials were coming, they all became nervous.
"Call out your master. The government has something to ask you."
Mr. Zhang walked out swiftly and said, "Sir, I'm here. I don't know what your visit today brings. We have always abided by the law." Everyone in the room was at a loss and confused, not knowing what was going on.
"We'll have to investigate to find out whether they're law-abiding." The officer pulled out the two portraits. "These two people are in your house. They say you're trafficking children, and your family has come looking for you."
Mr. Zhang picked up the portrait and looked at it. "I have never seen the child in this painting, so how can there be any talk of kidnapping?"
Chunxiao and the others were anxious, but they couldn't interrupt the officials as they were doing their work.
"Sir, please look carefully and make sure you haven't seen it. If we were to search it out, it would be hard to say for sure." The woman who reported to the police was so sure, and she was certainly confident. This gave them some confidence.
"Sir, I wouldn't dare to lie to you, no matter who I am. I really don't..." Before the man could finish his words, he was pulled aside by the housekeeper. The housekeeper whispered something to him, and sweat broke out on his forehead. After the two of them finished speaking, the man cursed him as a "fool."
