The next day, they got up early again, and today they planned to go to the dental clinic first.
The three of them were a little nervous when they thought about buying people directly through them. Although Chunxiao had bought people before, those were packaged and given to her, not selected by her personally. All the way to the pawnshop, they were still discussing what kind of person they wanted, whether male or female.
When they actually arrived at the pawnshop, they realized they had been worrying too much. There were many people coming in and out, some of them taking their loved ones with them. There were several pawnshops in the county town, and they asked the innkeeper, who said this one had the best reputation among its peers.
As soon as they entered, a servant came up to greet them, "Ladies and gentlemen, are you buying or selling land? Are you buying or selling people?"
The question was direct and clear. Knowing that they wanted to buy someone, the servant took them to a courtyard on the left. There were several pavilions in the courtyard. After asking them to sit down in a pavilion, someone who looked like a maid came up to serve tea. Not long after the servant left, a middle-aged man came over.
"Everyone, I'm one of the managers of this brokerage. I heard you're looking to buy someone. I'd like to know what your requirements are. It used to be hard to find people, but now it's different. The war just broke out in the north, and there are many displaced people. We have more people to choose from."
The more Chun Xiao listened, the more awkward this statement became. She glanced at the manager and asked, "Do you have anyone here who can write and do math?"
The steward was momentarily stumped, then burst into laughter. "Those who have studied are in high demand. They've been booked before they even arrive. We can't wait this long." The steward then looked at Dashan and the others. "If you have any requests, please tell us."
Dashan looked at Chunxiao, then looked outside the pavilion. "We want to buy a few people who can do farm work. As long as they are in good health and can work, it will be fine."
The manager was delighted. This was the most basic requirement. "How many people do you need? I have people ready here. I can choose the number for you."
"What's the price for your group?" Dahai asked, deliberately straightening his back.
"A man between 20 and 40 years old costs between nine and ten taels. Those between 40 and 50 are slightly cheaper. Women require a closer look, as prices fluctuate widely. How about I take you to have a look?"
Several people had the same idea, so they stood up and followed the steward into the inner courtyard.
Not long after entering the inner courtyard, a very strong man who looked like a security guard came over with a group of people. There were about 20 people in this group, most of them were wearing thin and ragged clothes. Chunxiao also saw two women shivering.
"Are there any married couples here?" Chunxiao asked. If they were married, their situation would be relatively stable. Besides working, there would be someone to cook and sew for the management of the manor, which would be ideal. They had mentioned this on the way here: if there were a married couple they liked, they would buy them.
"Yes, there are four couples, all of whom are childless and don't want to be a burden."
Shuwen frowned. What the manager said was really unpleasant. He was brave enough to walk over and take a look. Those people just stood there motionless with numb expressions.
The steward asked the four couples to step out.
Dashan saw that they were both middle-aged couples. Although they were a little skinny, they should be able to recover after some care. He looked at the steward beside him and asked, "Can I ask them a question?"
"Ask whatever you want."
Dashan walked up to them and asked them where they were from, what they did before, and why they were sold.
Several couples had different experiences. Two were domestic slaves from other farms, from the north, sold by their masters. One couple was even more tragic, originally from the north with two sons, but both died in battle. They left their home and, with no hope of making a living, sold themselves. The last couple were sold by family members.
This relative is so vicious, he must not be a serious relative.
Dashan and his friends discussed it and decided to buy three couples.
"If I buy these three couples, how much will it cost, Steward?" The three couples whose names were chosen showed joy in their eyes. The ones who were not chosen lowered their heads silently.
"10 taels for men, 9 taels for women, and 57 taels for three pairs." The manager smiled.
"Manager, you said ninety taels before, but when we asked you, you raised the price. That's not fair of you." Daha was unhappy.
"Oh my god, this is already the cheapest price. In the past, you couldn't take a person away without more than ten taels. Now it's only ten taels and you still think it's too expensive. These are all middle-aged men.
"They are in their prime, but look at them, they are so skinny. If they don't get enough nutrition, they won't be able to work. You are so calculating, but you don't even feed them enough."
"Then, then 54 taels. Any less and I won't be able to sell it."
Chunxiao pointed at the remaining couple and said, "If I buy both of them, how about 64 taels for four couples?"
"Girl, this is not the price you said. My men have already discounted me by one tael of silver each, and now you are trying to bargain. The more I sell, the more I lose. I can't afford it."
Every business owner is like this. Chun Xiao decided to try the trick from his previous life. "Brother, if that's the case, let's go look somewhere else."
The manager smiled when he heard this and said, "I've shown you around all this way and I don't want to ruin this deal. If you buy the other two women as well, I'll give them both at 8 taels each. How about that?"
Several people looked at the only two women left in the team. These two women were the two women Chun Xiao had seen shivering. She frowned and said, "Manager, I see they are shaking violently. Are they sick?"
The manager winked at the person next to him, and Chunxiao saw the person next to him leave. After a while, he brought two coats and threw them to the two of them.
