Dongsheng ran over and took another look. "Brother Dahe, this well is so big! It's bigger than the one in the yard."
Wang Zu also walked over and said, "My father was right when he said that you were secretly doing something big. No one in the village would know about it."
"If they find out, they'll definitely come here every few days, and then we'll have no peace." Dahe laughed. "I've been looking at that well for a couple of days, but there's nothing to see. It's more important for us to learn how to drive a cart. Maybe you can even accompany me to make deliveries in the future."
The two men then asked what the restaurant looked like, whether it was full of rich people, and asked about his delivery.
Yan Dashan and Tian went down the mountain after chopping a load of firewood.
At noon, there were not enough seats for the whole family to eat, so Wangzu and Dongsheng stood aside and refused to sit at the table. Chunxiao had to move the long table from the bedroom out for everyone to sit around, and only then did they sit down. Several children also sat around.
"Dad, ask Uncle Wu to get another table. We have a big family and we'll all eat together at noon. Let's set up two tables, one for the men and one for the women. It'll be more convenient. I'm going to town tomorrow, so I can buy a few more bowls."
Yan Bingfa knew what she meant. She, along with Shufeng, were both grown-up girls, so it wasn't appropriate for them to eat with outsiders. "Okay, he should have a table ready at home. I'll bring one over for you tomorrow morning, along with two benches. The main room is small, so we can eat in the yard unless it rains."
Zhou and Tian brought the dishes together. Today's dishes were not much different from usual ones: a large bowl of braised sausage, a large bowl of steamed eggs, two stir-fried vegetables, one stir-fried tofu, and a pot of cured pork ribs soup.
Even such a dish left the two farmhands dumbfounded. They had not expected Yan Bingfa to treat them so graciously. Especially after Zhou had given them a bowl full of rice mixed with whole grains, they were completely overwhelmed.
"Uncle, aunt, you are too polite. We are workers, not guests. You..." How much does this meal cost?
"Yeah, let's just eat porridge."
Everyone in the family laughed.
"This isn't something we prepared specially for you. This is what we always eat at noon. Just enjoy your meal." Yan Dahe patted Dongsheng, "We all have to eat like your sister Chunxiao. If she eats meat, we have to eat meat. If she eats vegetables, we have vegetables too."
"Second brother, how can you talk to people like that?" Chunxiao was unhappy.
"Dahai is right. We should eat whatever Chunxiao arranges here. This is how she requires the food to be. You just have to follow her." Dashan also laughed.
"You two, stop being so cocky. Don't act like you've gotten something for nothing." Zhou served them some food. "Feel free to eat. Don't be polite. We eat casually too. Sometimes we have more dishes, sometimes we just have porridge. Anyway, we do whatever's convenient for us. You'll get the hang of it as time goes by."
"Grandma, Dad and Second Uncle are right. Here you just do whatever Aunt says. I didn't have such a good dinner when I went back. Duo'er and the others also like to eat here. Dad said you only listen to Aunt."
"What's wrong with me listening to your aunt? We use her rice to cook. If I don't listen to her, I'll listen to you."
Dongsheng watched them bickering at the dinner table, carefully picked up the bowl and took a bite. He hadn't eaten dry rice for a long time since his mother fell ill. Now there were not only eggs but also meat in his bowl, which was better than what he had eaten during the Chinese New Year. For some reason, he felt a little disappointed in his heart. It was true that one could not compare to another.
Wang Zu was not polite. "Thanks to Sister Chunxiao, I am able to eat such a good meal. I will not be polite."
"I told you you're welcome. We'll be together every day from now on. There's still a lot of time to go."
"Try the braised sausage I made for you. This is our food, and it sells very well in the restaurant."
When the two heard this, they quickly picked up a piece and put it in their mouths, "Well, it's delicious, even better than meat." Wangzu took a mouthful of rice and picked up another piece and put it in his mouth.
"I've never eaten such delicious meat." Dongsheng ate carefully, "No wonder your family can do business with restaurants.
"If it tastes good, you can eat more. There's still rice in the pot. But make sure you're full. We have heavy work to do this afternoon."
Although the food was delicious, they were new to the place, so it wasn't appropriate to start eating right away. They each finished a large bowl and refused to refill it, insisting they were full. It takes time to adjust, and Yan Bingfa and the others didn't try to persuade them.
After finishing the meal and resting for a while, Yan Bingfa led the cow and went to the fields with his two sons, Shuwen and Wangzu.
Today is Zhang's braised meat day. Zhou, Tian and Chunxiao went up the mountain in the afternoon. Shufeng stayed in the village with Pan'er, while Shuduo stayed to help look after the yard and the chickens.
In the afternoon, Chunxiao and his friends each chopped two loads of firewood and went down the mountain. Not long after they got home, Yan Bangfa and his friends also came back with the cows. Everyone looked tired.
"How much did you get?" Zhou asked.
"Three acres, it will take several days."
"Uncle Bingfa said there's another 10 mu. Auntie, I didn't expect you had so much land. My dad said your family is just like ours, but how could they be the same? You have 15 mu."
"Of the other 10 mu, 6 mu belong to Chunxiao. They were all bought this year, so naturally the villagers don't know about it."
"Aunt, Sister Chunxiao, I heard from my uncle that the harvest will be good if we apply base fertilizer to the land like today. Can I tell this to my father?" Dongsheng asked carefully.
"Of course, there's nothing to hide." Chun Xiao smiled. "When you plant wheat, soak the seeds in cold water for four to five hours a day before. This will increase the germination rate and speed."
