Chapter 39: I feel like I'm on a pirate ship
Du Mazi and others nervously gripped the hilts of their swords as they heard the footsteps running from behind.
Zhou Yunshu turned to look at the man running towards her, and spoke with a hint of impatience, "What? Can you bear the consequences of delaying the adults' business?"
The man immediately apologized with a smile, "I'm sorry, sir. I'm sorry."
As he spoke, he respectfully handed a wooden box to Zhou Yunshu and said, "Sir, I hope you can put in a few good words for me with the county magistrate."
"Nice words?"
"It's just the yamen runner's business." He raised the box in his hand and said with a flattering smile, "It's just a small gift, not a respect."
Zhou Yunshu watched the man casually open the wooden box, raised her eyebrows in surprise at what was in the box, then closed the box and held it in her arms.
"Okay, I'll take note. Wait for my news."
When the man grinned and nodded, Zhou Yunshu poked Wei Zhong beside her. Wei Zhong immediately raised his whip and set off, leaving behind the man with a silly smile on his face.
…
Zhou Yunshu and her group left very quickly, even Hu Zi and the other two who were pushing the cart behind them were not slow.
Originally, Hu Zi and the other two were filled with joy that they were finally going to show up in front of the county magistrate, but the further they walked, the more they felt something was wrong.
First, two mule carts surrounded them from the front and back, then they discovered that the route they were taking to transport grain was not to the county government office. Coupled with the screams not far away and the flames everywhere, their legs almost went weak.
There was an ominous feeling, as if they were on a pirate ship, and this feeling was confirmed when they saw the dilapidated and lost city gate and the corpses scattered on the ground.
The two people behind Hu Zi stopped in their tracks in fear. The county town had been breached!?
The man on the mule cart behind him pointed the tip of a knife at his back and threatened, "Get up and get going!"
After all, Hu Zi and the other two were gangsters who had been in the business for many years. Even if they were stupid, they would have realized that Anshan County had been attacked. So the people who came to transport the grain today were most likely not from the government office.
However, after living for so many years, they are still very aware of the current situation. If they want to survive now, they can only follow this group of people of unknown origin out of the city.
Zhou Yunshu and his group moved very quickly. The refugees at the city gate had disappeared, and all that was left on the ground were the bodies of officers, soldiers and refugees.
Zhou Yunshu and others did not stop and drove the carriage all the way towards the direction of the large group.
They occasionally encountered scattered refugees on the road, but when they saw Wei Zhong and others holding long swords and looking fierce, and the empty city gate, they abandoned Zhou Yunshu and his group without hesitation and rushed to Anshan County.
Zhou Yunshu is eager to go home and now just wants to get back to her daughter, mother and others as soon as possible.
However, when they rushed to the place where Du Laozhuang and others should have stayed, Zhou Yunshu did not see their large group except for Du Laoer and others who arrived earlier than them.
"Where are the people?!" Du Mazi exclaimed.
As soon as Zhou Yunshu got off the car, Du Laoer and Manager Liang came over. In addition, there was also Wang Liyong who should be with the main force.
Zhou Yunshu saw that Du Laoer did not look anxious, and that Wang Liyong did not look like he had just experienced anything, so she felt relieved.
Before Zhou Yunshu could ask, Du Laoer had already explained to her, "Only Wang Liyong was there when we arrived."
Wang Liyong now looked like a proper refugee, with no baggage on him. No one would care if he died on the roadside, so he waited safely on the road for Zhou Yunshu and her group.
Wang Liyong had a very good impression of Zhou Yunshu. If it weren't for her, their family would have gone bankrupt long ago.
So after seeing Zhou Yunshu, Wang Liyong immediately said after Du Laoer finished speaking, "Mr. Zhou, after the city gate was captured, everyone was afraid of being affected, so they retreated another three miles to the outer perimeter. I stayed behind specifically to wait for you."
Zhou Yunshu finally breathed a sigh of relief after confirming that the main force was alright. "Then let's continue on our journey."
Du Laoer and his group did not fail to notice the three strangers sandwiched between Du Mazi and Wei Zhong, but seeing how obedient they looked, they did not think much of it.
Only after Hu Zi discovered that there was no trace of the Red Lotus Envoy among this group of people did he really realize that they had been deceived.
Oh my god! How could they be so stupid!
Hu Zi and the other two roared to the sky in their hearts, but on the surface they still had to keep their tails between their legs and follow Zhou Yunshu.
Zhou Yunshu and her group caught up with the main force an hour later.
Before they got close, the patrolmen noticed their presence.
Everyone in the large group originally thought that their death was approaching because they had no water, not much food, and Zhou Yunshu had not brought anyone back yet.
When Anshan County was breached by refugees, except for those who made up their minds to leave the team and rob the county government office, the rest of the people were secretly regretting why they did not go.
But when they saw Zhou Yunshu rushing back, they regretted disappearing without a trace.
When Zhou Yunshu came back, she first handed over the water and food she bought to the excited Du Lao Zhuang, and then took Doctor Xue and his apprentice to their car.
When Li Jialan and Fang Huiwen saw Dr. Xue, they were surprised at first, and then their eyes became red.
"Doctor Xue, you...how did Yun Shu end up meeting you?"
Doctor Xue looked around but didn't see Ji Mingzhu and the others. He sighed and said, "This is a long story, a long one... Where's the old lady?"
Li Jialan's eyes turned red again. She didn't know whether her mother-in-law was alive or dead, and the mother-in-law and daughter-in-law from the second room were nowhere to be seen.
As the world becomes more and more chaotic and the refugees become more and more aggressive, Li Jialan becomes more and more panicked.
Zhou Yunshu looked at Li Jialan sobbing softly and said to Doctor Xue, "We'll talk more in the evening. Now let's get on with our journey!"
The two mule carts driven by Doctor Xue and his companions arrived near Zhou's mule cart, while the other carts carrying water and food did not move.
The group kept walking south. It was not known whether all the refugees rushed to Anshan County, but they did not encounter any other refugees along the way.
With food and water, the team felt more confident and full of strength. Especially since Zhou Yunshu also notified everyone that each person would have three sips of water to drink in the evening, the team moved faster.
Just for these three sips of water, everyone walked all the way until night.
The team occupied a large open space and began to rest. When they had almost finished packing, Wei Zhong asked the patrol to notify everyone in the team to attend a meeting.
The person who convened the meeting was Zhou Yunshu. Zhou Yunshu originally wanted to let Du Laozhuang speak first, after all, he was the legitimate manager of this team.
But Du Laozhuang waved his hand and let Zhou Yunshu speak.
Du Laozhuang's original intention was that after the two of them pushed and pulled each other a few times, he would go on stage to speak, in order to demonstrate his status in the team.
But who knew that he was just waving his hand politely to let Zhou Yunshu speak first, and Zhou Yunshu actually stood on the cart and prepared to speak, which made Du Laozhuang choke.
