The next day, Bai Nuo went to the stable to put out the hay and feed, and then began to tidy up the stable. Occasionally, passersby would peek inside and see that the fair-skinned young educated youth from the city did not seem to mind the horse manure at all. Not only that, but she also cleaned the stable very efficiently.
Based on this alone, the people in the animal husbandry team began to look at this young educated youth from the big city with new respect.
Although these tasks are normal for people in the countryside, as the saying goes, there is no harm without comparison.
This alone was enough to make the people in the countryside treat Bai Nuo differently.
Good morning, Uncle Zhao. What are you doing here all by yourself?
When Bai Nuo rode Black Wind past the old cowshed, he saw Grandpa Zhao squatting in front of a dilapidated thatched hut and greeted him curiously.
"Girl, you're here just in time." Grandpa Zhao looked up and saw Bai Nuo. He immediately said with a look of surprise, "I heard you know carpentry? Can you help me take a look and see if you can fix this? I've been fiddling with it for ages but I still can't figure it out. Your Uncle Zhang Quan isn't in the brigade today, and I can't find anyone who knows how to do it."
"Okay!" Bai Nuo jumped off the back of the black wind and quickly walked to Grandpa Zhao and squatted down.
"This is... a valley windmill?" Bai Nuo then picked up a wooden board and looked at it curiously.
Looking at the little girl's curious expression, Grandpa Zhao said with a loving face, "That's right, this is a wooden winnowing machine. I dragged it out of the old cowshed. It's a bit old, and I was thinking if I could replace a few rotten boards and keep it for our breeding team."
Bai Nuo nodded knowingly. It was the first time she had seen such an old-fashioned farming tool, which was far too advanced for her. However, she had a lot of miscellaneous books in her space, and she should be able to find an introduction to this thing when she went back and looked through them. As long as she knew the internal workings, she could not only repair it, but also make a new one without any problem.
"Grandpa, take this thing back to the animal husbandry team. I'll go back this afternoon and take a look at it. I should be able to fix it."
"Alright, I'll take it back to the feeding team right away." Hearing this, Grandpa Zhao stood up with relief, preparing to take it back in a wooden oxcart.
"By the way, how come you know carpentry at such a young age? Anyone can learn that skill."
Bai Nuo smiled and used the same trick he used to fool the captain back then.
“I learned from my grandfather. He was an old carpenter with pretty good skills, but I’m not very talented, so the things I make are just passable for my own use.”
“Oh, this is not good. It’s good that you can make it. But I can tell that your grandfather is a reasonable man. The carpenters in the other brigades of our commune treat their skills as family heirlooms and only pass them on to their sons and grandsons. None of them would let their granddaughters learn them.”
"Uh..." Bai Nuo blinked. How could she give such a good reputation to her grandfather, who was nowhere to be found?
"That's not how it works. My grandfather wanted me to learn this skill so I could go out and earn money early, and then come back to buy wine for his son, my father. Otherwise, he wouldn't have passed it on to me."
Grandpa Zhao's expression froze for a moment: This is awkward!
Yu Guosheng glanced furtively at the old man beside him, suppressing a laugh as he thought: Damn, this is going to be awkward!
Zhu Dadao secretly hid in the old cowshed, clutching at the cracks in the wood, gritting his teeth, his eyes reddening.
Yu Guosheng pursed his lips and patted his old friend's shoulder: "Don't be like that, Niu Niu is still young, she can't speak properly..."
"She called me grandpa, she called me grandpa so sweetly." Zhu Dadao gritted his teeth to keep from bursting out, his eyes red as he looked at his old friend, his face full of emotion.
Yu Guosheng: "..."
You didn't hear a word of what that little girl said afterward, slandering you, her grandfather!
"You... wake up!" Yu Guosheng had no desire to comfort the old deaf man in front of him anymore; he just wanted to slap him awake.
“Niu Niu just said that her grandfather forced her to learn a trade to earn money so that he could buy alcohol for her father.”
"What does that have to do with me, Zhu Dadao!" Old Man Zhu's face changed, and he looked at Yu Guosheng seriously, saying righteously, "I would never treat my darling like that. I would only let her father, uncles, and brothers earn money for her to spend."
Yu Guosheng was so angry he laughed, but he didn't think there was anything wrong with what Zhu Dadao said. However, he just couldn't stand Zhu Dadao's smug look and said through gritted teeth, "Wake up, my Niu Niu said her grandfather is a carpenter."
"That's me! I'm a carpenter, so what? What's wrong with you?" Zhu Dadao said confidently.
Yu Guosheng rolled his eyes and said with disdain, "You're no carpenter at all. You can't even nail a simple stool."
"Who says I'm not? I'll say I'm a carpenter, and then no one will dare say I'm a general." Old Master Zhu raised his arrogant face, his tone domineering.
Then Grandpa Zhu realized the truth, frowned slightly, and said with some anxiety, "No... I'll go back and find someone to teach me carpentry, so that he won't slap my darling's face. When my darling comes home, I want my granddaughter to use furniture that I made myself."
Yu Guosheng twitched his lips: Your wish is truly grand!
"Hey, you know..." Old Master Zhu gently tugged at his old friend's sleeve and muttered softly, "What do you think if I were to demote myself, I could be assigned to this place, and then I could spend every day with my little darling."
"Are you crazy? Did my sister not hit you hard enough, or is my sister-in-law too weak to wield a gun? You better shut up. The Zhu family still needs you to keep things under control, and my older sister and brother-in-law still need you to secretly protect them."
