Chapter 6 Moving into the New Dormitory
Furniture store.
The furniture store, which belongs to the supply and marketing cooperative, is located in an abandoned factory building. The furniture inside is both new and old, and you can choose whatever you want.
Many of these items were confiscated during the denunciation of landlords and wealthy landowners, so they included furniture made of precious wood.
However, those pieces of furniture are not considered desirable by people today; their aesthetics are out of step with current trends.
Upon entering the factory, Li Huguo and Ruanqiu headed straight for the dark red five-drawer chest.
Chen Yun stood there observing for a long time. Although she really liked the antique furniture that was completely covered in dust, she hesitated for a while before following Ruan Qiu to another factory.
The item was good, but it was out of place at the time.
"If you like, you can choose a smaller one, but for larger items, you should buy wooden ones."
Seemingly sensing Chen Yun's thoughts, Gao Ming gently reminded him from his side.
Chen Yun nodded.
Gao Ming comforted him, saying, "We'll come again when we have the chance. I believe that one day we'll be able to buy whatever we want, and no one will gossip anymore."
Chen Yun looked around and quickly chose Zhang San's desk and a two-door wardrobe.
"Buy two pear wood chests. They're cheap and durable. You can cover them with a cloth and put things on them. Look at this one..."
Gao Ming was clearly more attentive than Chen Yun, constantly offering advice from Chen Yun's perspective, and even taking over the negotiation.
Their enthusiastic attitude even made the furniture store manager mistakenly think that two young couples had come to buy furniture.
"Six yuan it is." The stationmaster, exasperated by Gao Ming's nagging, finally wrote down the price of the folding round table in his notebook, not forgetting to joke, "Don't forget to give me wedding candy when Captain Gao gets married." He then looked at Chen Yun with a smile.
Gao Ming chuckled sheepishly, scratched his head, and slowly began to explain.
However, Chen Yun didn't hear it. He was standing far away, and his attention was entirely focused on the treasure cabinet in front of him.
The cabinet frame is painted with gold leaf, and although the scroll pattern is covered with thick dust, its exquisite beauty can still be faintly seen.
Just then, Chen Yun's heart suddenly pounded twice, and an indescribable emotion welled up from the bottom of her heart.
Instead of wiping away the dust to examine it closely, Chen Yun quickly decided to buy the cabinet.
"I need a cabinet for storing miscellaneous items in my dorm room. How much do you think this cabinet would cost, station manager?"
The station chief glanced at the cabinet and clicked his tongue twice: "I have to say this upfront, this cabinet was found in the house of a reactionary after he committed suicide. It's bad luck!"
"The person didn't die in the closet, so what's unlucky about it? I just think the closet is nice," Gao Ming laughed.
Chen Yun also said, "I think it's good too."
"If you like it, take it for one yuan." The old stationmaster waved his hand.
The cabinet has been sitting here for two or three years. People who want it either think the color is old-fashioned or that it's unlucky. If it stays there any longer, he's even planning to sell it as firewood.
In fact, Chen Yun wanted to buy more than just one or two pieces of furniture, but the dormitory was so small that it couldn't fit much stuff in it.
The military green truck, fully loaded, sped towards the Hongri Machinery Factory.
With the help of two men, several pieces of furniture were quickly moved upstairs, and under Chen Yun's direction, the room was soon filled to the brim.
"You clean up first, I'll go return the vehicle to the transport team."
Gao Ming raised his hand to wipe the sweat from his forehead, leaving Chen Yun with only a neat turn and a departing silhouette.
After tidying up her dorm room, Chen Yun thought she should definitely set out a nice table to thank the people who had selflessly helped her these past few days.
"Finally, we've found a place to stay."
Looking at the house that was beginning to take shape, Chen Yun sighed with a double meaning.
This room was her first stop after she transmigrated to this world. After two busy days, she finally got off to a good start in life.
"Chen Yun, after lunch this afternoon, let's go to the store to buy some fabric and other odds and ends. We can't do without curtains in the house."
Ruanqiu, who was also cleaning next door, was talking loudly and cheerfully.
Chen Yun has to go to work tomorrow, so she must try to buy all the odds and ends she needs today.
Clearly... Ruanqiu is in the same situation.
The two didn't even have time for lunch; after wiping the furniture, they went to the department store at the foot of the mountain to buy things.
By the time everything was finished, it was already evening. Chen Yun looked at the house and finally let out a long sigh.
"Looks like I'll have to eat at the cafeteria for another week. I'll buy honeycomb briquettes next week when I have a day off."
After taking stock of the things he bought, Chen Yun realized that he had forgotten several items, including honeycomb briquettes.
Since it's a family housing building, a kitchen for cooking must be provided.
The stove on the first floor is in front of the door, while the kitchens on the second to fifth floors are all located together.
The seven houses on the left are next to the toilets at the end of the corridor, while the eight houses on the right are next to the stairs.
Apart from the single-story buildings, all other buildings in the factory were required to use honeycomb briquettes.
Thinking of the kitchen, and realizing that there were no bowls, chopsticks, or pots, Chen Yun pulled out a chair, sat down, and first wrote down what she needed to write on a piece of paper.
Knock knock knock—
I had only written two lines when there was a knock on the door.
"Is this Sister Ruanqiu?" Chen Yun responded, her right hand still holding the pen, and walked over to open the door.
Gao Ming was standing outside the door.
"Li Huguo brought food to Comrade Ruanqiu. I thought you probably hadn't eaten either, so I got some food and brought it over."
The man smiled shyly and didn't dare to look Chen Yun in the eye when he spoke, staring at the door frame in an extremely awkward posture.
If Chen Yun still couldn't see that Gao Ming was interested in her, then she would have wasted her two lifetimes.
"Thank you, Captain Gao, but I've already eaten." Chen Yun smiled faintly, showing no intention of letting anyone in.
To be honest, Chen Yun didn't dislike Gao Ming, but she had only been here for a few days and all her energy was needed to adapt to this world.
"Alright! If you need any help, just let me know. I'll go check on Li Huguo and his wife next door."
The obvious rejection did not change Gao Ming's expression; on the contrary, he was delighted by Chen Yun's cautious attitude towards relationships.
Just as Gao Ming was about to turn away, Chen Yun called out to him again.
"Captain Gao, I'd like to invite you and Director Huang to my dorm for dinner next Sunday, I..."
The refusal needs to be made clear, but Chen Yun, who deserves our gratitude, should also be thanked.
"See you then." Gao Ming nodded and stepped into the next room in two steps.
Chen Yun closed the door, her thoughts lingering on Gao Ming for only a few seconds before she continued to remember what she needed to buy.
"Like ants moving house, they move it little by little."
After looking at the list of items on the paper, Chen Yun shook his head and chuckled, his gaze falling on the treasure cabinet that hadn't been cleaned yet.
The dust was wiped away from the surface of the cabinet, revealing a noble yet elegant floral and bird pattern underneath.
The cabinet was jet black and shiny, with colorful patterns that were so exquisite that Chen Yun couldn't help but trace the raised designs with her fingers.
The moment my fingers touched the brass handle, that strange feeling from the afternoon surged back.
It was as if... urging her to open the cabinet quickly.
The strange feeling that afternoon seemed to be no coincidence, Chen Yun thought to herself, and reached out to open the cabinet door.
There was nothing in the cabinet, only a musty smell emanating from it.
Chen Yun felt something was strange and reached into the cabinet, feeling around inch by inch.
The old saying goes that seeing is believing, but Chen Yun's persistent intuition screamed that something was definitely going on.
Finally, I froze when my fingers touched the bottom corner.
There is a rice-grain-sized protrusion on the side corner.
Almost instinctively, I pressed it. With a crisp snap, a thin drawer suddenly popped out from the cabinet leg.
I initially thought the two patterns on the corner of the table were just an outline, but it turned out to be a small drawer.
The dozen or so banknotes were scattered about, with one "Great Unity" note standing out the most.
"Perfect for storing valuables."
The unexpected windfall totaled thirteen yuan, but what was even more delightful was the strange intuition that welled up in my heart.
Chen Yun guessed that this intuition might have been something the original owner had, or it might be a so-called "golden finger" (a special ability or advantage).
"Let's observe first and then decide."
He stuffed the passbook and money into the drawer, and with another thud, the drawer was instantly sealed shut, leaving no trace of the deception.
The aroma of food wafting from next door filled the air, and Chen Yun climbed into bed contentedly and fell into a deep sleep.
A busy but fulfilling day.

Hongri Machinery Factory.
Yesterday the sun was shining brightly and making people's backs feel hot, but this morning it was as if someone had leaked a hole in the sky, and the rain came out of nowhere.
The downpour had barely started when the drawbacks of the rooftop dorms became immediately apparent.
Rainwater flowed down the corridor pillars and into the corridor, quickly forming a thin layer of water on the ground. The situation was even worse at the very edge, where 515 was located.
When Chen Yun woke up in the morning, she found water stains on the windowsill, rendering the window seal ineffective.
But Chen Yun had to go to work today and didn't have time to deal with it, so she could only cut up an old shirt, twist it into strips, and stuff it into the window crack, planning to find the housing department to deal with it after get off work.
After quickly washing up and getting ready to go downstairs, I happened to see Gao Ming carrying some things and walking upstairs.
"Comrade Chen, time to go to work!"
Gao Ming is broad-minded; even though he was rejected yesterday, he can still greet Chen Yun with a smile today.
The ease in his eyes was genuine; his open and honest gaze met hers with a smile.
"Comrade Gao didn't come to work today?"
"We were supposed to depart on a mission this morning, but it suddenly started raining heavily in the middle of the night, and visibility was low in the mountains, so the mission was canceled at the last minute."
"Then you go ahead with your work, I'm going to work now."
As the rain intensified, Chen Yun knew that if she didn't hurry up and leave, she would definitely be late for her first day of work.
"etc."
After a slight pause, Gao Ming still chose to speak.
Chen Yun turned around in confusion.
"Li Huguo was worried that the windows of the new house were leaking, so he asked me to come and take a look. If Comrade Chen's house is also leaking, I..."
"Thank you, Comrade Gao." Chen Yun was overjoyed and, without thinking, took out the keys from his bag and stuffed them into Gao Ming's palm: "I will always remember your great kindness." After saying that, he exaggeratedly saluted.
His face, radiant with undisguised laughter, turned and scurried downstairs after speaking.
Gao Ming was stunned for a moment before looking downstairs in a daze.
The figure wearing a raincoat disappeared into the rain at lightning speed, and soon vanished without a trace.
Gao Ming was initially worried that Chen Yun would feel awkward, but he didn't expect that Chen Yun would be even more carefree than him.
"We still got outdone!"
Gao Ming gathered the keys in his palm, a smile spreading across his lips, and muttered to himself.
