Song Yunzheng's cold, stern voice rang out in the quiet study, tinged with a hint of doubt. Lin Yue was startled, nearly dropping the ring from her hand. She quickly put the ring back in the box, trying to hide her panic, but her eyes couldn't completely conceal the complex emotions within her.
"I saw it was raining outside, so I came in to close the window, and then I accidentally saw this... I'm sorry..."
Song Yunzheng strode in, staring intently at the blue box on the table—the box he had once so eagerly wanted to give away. The last time he'd accidentally stumbled upon it, it had almost disrupted his resolve.
"Didn't I tell you not to go into the study so casually? There are many important things in there. What are you doing now? Lin Yue, you just won't listen to anything I say, will you? Or is it really as your mother said, that you ignore what others say and forget what you promised as soon as you turn your back?! You are twenty years old, not ten. You need to be more discreet in your actions!" Song Yunzheng's voice was calm, but every word was like a sharp sword, piercing straight into her heart.
Lin Yue opened her eyes wide, tears welling up in them. She stared at him, trying to find a trace of warmth and understanding in his expression and eyes. However, his face remained calm, but a faint sadness lingered in his eyes, as if concealing endless unspoken thoughts.
She thought that after spending time together, they had developed a special emotional bond, and that he must have feelings for her. She could feel his care and concern for her; those subtle acts of thoughtfulness touched her deeply. But now, faced with his indifference and reproach, she felt incredibly confused and lost.
It's just a ring, isn't it? It's just an ex-girlfriend, isn't it? Why care so much? She couldn't understand his behavior, let alone accept his attitude.
She couldn't help but begin to doubt whether everything before was just her imagination. Was his kindness towards her merely out of politeness or a sense of responsibility? The questions in her mind grew, and her heart ached more and more.
"Is it because this was prepared for your ex-girlfriend that you're so angry?" Lin Yue blurted out her question, eager to know the reason for his anger and the real reason why he wouldn't let her into the study.
"Who told you?" Song Yunzheng's heavy breathing was like muffled thunder, and it was clear that he was trying his best to endure it.
"Nobody told me, I just guessed. There are letters engraved on the ring, right? It's hard not to know. Is MWN the initials of your ex-girlfriend's name?" Lin Yue seemed bewitched, determined to get to the bottom of it, even harboring a sliver of hope that he would deny it outright.
"Get out!" Song Yunzheng suddenly raised his voice and roared at her. This was his old wound, a wound he buried deep in his heart and didn't want anyone to know about, but this girl had so ruthlessly torn it open, leaving it bleeding profusely.
Lin Yue trembled with fright. She pursed her lips tightly, trying her best to hold back her tears. At this moment, she hated her sensitive tear ducts to the core. Before the argument even started, she had already lost half of her momentum.
She held back her tears, glared at him fiercely, and shouted, "Why are you being so fierce? So what if you have an ex-girlfriend? It's just a broken ring! So what if I saw it? Do you have to treasure it like this? If that's the case, why didn't you give it to her in the first place? Why keep it as a keepsake?"
Lin Yue's words only added fuel to the fire. Song Yunzheng suddenly raised his head, looked at her coldly, and pointed towards the door, shouting, "Get out! Get out!" His voice grew louder and louder.
"Fine, you said it, Song Yunzheng, you bastard!" Lin Yue pinched her thigh to stop her tears from falling, turned around and walked out of the study, slamming the door shut with a "bang" and running out.
In the dead of winter, on a night as cold as an icebox, Lin Yue rushed out of the residential compound. The security guard peeked out curiously, glanced at her, and seeing that she was dressed in thin clothes, couldn't help but ask with concern, "Young lady, where are you going so late?"
Lin Yue didn't even turn her head, casually replying, "Throwing away the trash!"
Throwing out the trash? Going out of the apartment complex to throw out the trash in the middle of the night on such a cold day?
Lin Yue strode forward angrily. She had stormed out in a fit of rage, and her cotton-padded coat was rather thin. At this hour, she didn't know where to go. The biting wind was like a sharp blade, mercilessly whipping at her face. Her frail body trembled uncontrollably, like a sieve in the cold wind.
As she walked, she kept looking back, her heart pounding like a rabbit's, hoping Song Yunzheng would catch up. If he did, she knew she wouldn't forgive him so easily.
After a long time, not a soul appeared, not even a ghost. She suddenly felt even more wronged, pouting, tears streaming down her face like a burst dam. The more she thought about it, the more pathetic she felt. Perhaps his kindness towards her was truly just out of a sense of responsibility; perhaps she had been overthinking things, being too sentimental.
Lin Yue walked slowly forward with her head down, kicking things along the way as she went. She felt very disappointed. "Damn Song Yunzheng, you'd better not come looking for me. I might as well freeze to death out here!"
She hadn't eaten dinner and was starving. The food Song Yunzheng had ordered had arrived a long time ago, but she'd been so engrossed in the things in his study that she'd forgotten to eat. She reached into her pockets—empty! The worst part was, she hadn't brought her phone! What to do? Freeze to death on the street, or obediently go home?
It was very quiet around, with very few vehicles on the road and no pedestrians. In such cold weather, who would be crazy enough to come out for a walk in the middle of the night? Lin Yue looked around and saw only a few dim streetlights standing in the cold wind in the pitch-black environment. She couldn't help but regret her impulsive decision to run out. Why did she have to put herself through this?
