Chapter 8
Sun Town has only one church. Archbishop Owen, over fifty years old, is a devoted believer in the God of Wisdom and a close friend of the town's mayor. He holds real power and frequently travels to various locations, including the town's only school for extraordinary abilities.
Owen's portrait hung in the lobby of the teaching building. He had short gray hair, a thin face, and serious eyes. However, his teeth were slightly protruding, making his thin lips somewhat invisible, which made him look a little funny, but no one dared to laugh at him.
His portrait is hung here because he is also the honorary principal of the school.
"Principal Meng, your place is too shabby. Which school is like yours?" Owen pinched his nose with one hand, gathered his sleeves with the other, and walked across the playground with disgust.
The playground was overgrown with weeds and some small black bugs were flying around, which made Owen look even uglier.
Principal Meng said shyly, "Bishop, you know, we have limited manpower and funds. We haven't had time to take care of this playground yet. Please forgive me..."
Owen pulled out a laptop from his pocket and projected a thin virtual screen. He casually wrote on it: "Sanitary environment, only 20 points; capital investment, 5 points..."
Principal Meng's face changed. He tugged at the bishop's robe and whispered, "Bishop, if you write like this, I'm afraid our school will be in even worse trouble!"
Owen said solemnly, "I'm only acting impartially. Your school failed the inspection and ranks last in the exams every year. It's true... you're not far from being shut down. I've heard rumors that if you keep up this trend this year, you'll really have to close down."
Principal Meng was stunned for a moment, then trotted over and followed. "Are you telling the truth?"
"Of course you're right. You should have been mentally prepared. This school has been in trouble for a long time." Owen glanced at him.
"But in this case, what should the students do?" Principal Meng asked anxiously.
As they spoke, the two entered the teaching building, where the bustling sounds of children could be heard. The students here were between the ages of ten and sixteen, divided into three classes: B, C, and D. Classes were not divided by age, but by the level of Extraordinary ability. Most of the children were in Classes C and D, with only two students in Class B.
"As you know, the growth rate of extraordinary abilities slows after adulthood. If they can't reach Rank B during middle school, they'll only be slightly stronger than ordinary people... If the school closes, the students in Class B should be able to transfer to other nearby schools smoothly. However, for those who are older and still in Class C and D, it's harder to say. Most of them will have to drop out."
This made Principal Meng's heart sink again: "What about their subsidies?"
"Of course they're gone," Owen said matter-of-factly. "The church and the government spend so much money to cultivate gifted children. They're not talented enough and can't produce the corresponding value, so of course they don't deserve any more."
As he says, most of the children in this school will lose the opportunity to develop extraordinary abilities and fall back into poverty.
Thinking of this, Principal Meng decisively took out an envelope from his suit trouser pocket and pulled Archbishop Owen's sleeve: "According to the previous rules, this is a small gift and not a sign of respect."
Owen's mouth widened, revealing his first smile of the day. He accepted the envelope and said, "I know it's not easy for you. I can help you pass the assessment, but many rural schools have closed down in recent years. This is the general trend. You should also work hard on your assessment results, or strive for other awards."
"Then... could you please give me some hints?" Principal Meng asked cautiously.
"As far as I know, there's an extraordinary ability competition on Ibilene Island in the second half of the month. It's a nationwide competition, and you haven't participated in such events before... If you can win a prize, even a small one, and pass the auditions, it can also give you some points when you're eliminated."
Principal Meng's heart moved, he knew this might be a ray of hope for the school.
The two walked one after the other, and Principal Meng was thinking about how to raise funds to participate in the competition. After all, the travel expenses, food expenses and accommodation expenses of teachers and students are a considerable expense.
At this moment, a burst of cheers came from the school gate, interrupting his thoughts.
A student ran by, making a trumpet shape with his hands: "The school doctor is here!"
The students scattered and looked at school doctor An Ge with solemn and respectful eyes. She was carrying a shoulder bag and walking towards the teaching building without looking away.
Owen pushed his frameless glasses up: "This is..."
"He's the new school doctor we recruited," Principal Meng replied.
The students' discussions were full of confusion and worry.
"I thought the school doctor had run away and would never come to our school again."
"She didn't go to the competition as agreed yesterday, yet she managed to come to work today looking calm and collected."
"Didn't she escape? Why is she here again? This time, Hai Weir will definitely not let her go. I'm really worried about her!"
There was a lot of gossip around him. Everyone thought Ango was afraid of Hai Weir, so he left school early yesterday afternoon and stood up the whole school. However, Ango didn't care about these rumors.
Owen and Principal Meng stopped at the end of the corridor and saw the ordinary-looking doctor take out the key from his backpack and open the door of the health room.
The next second, a foul smell wafted out of the office. Everyone saw that the desks and the floor were covered with scattered papers, books were torn into pieces, the walls were covered with spilled drinks, and even the filing cabinets and drawers were wide open, with the corpses of some animals stuffed inside.
"It stinks!" Tang Yu followed behind An Ge and immediately covered his mouth and nose.
The students gathered at the door of the health room and screamed.
Ango, a rigorous and aloof genius researcher, has been surrounded by elites for many years, but this is the first time he has encountered such a street scoundrel. He felt like the veins on his forehead were about to pop out.
It would have been fine if she had suffered a setback at Xi Sen's hands yesterday, but Hai Weir even dared to jump on her head.
If Ango was originally just dissatisfied with Hai Weil's arrogance and domineering behavior, now he really wants to kill him.
"How dare you show up in front of me?" Hei Weier pushed through the crowd of students, still reeking of alcohol. No one around him wanted to be touched by him, and they all avoided him in disgust. Only two slightly taller students followed him.
Tang Yu squeezed her hands nervously, and she leaned over to An Ge's ear to remind him, "These are people from Class B. Haiweier only respects these two students."
At this moment, Hai Weier was standing behind Ango. He was tall and looked down at her from above, his face gloomy. "Since you're a deserter, I won't make things difficult for you. As long as you kneel down and apologize to me, and never show up in Sun Town again, I will let you go. How about it?"
The two students from Class B stood on Hai Weir's left and right, both with arrogant expressions. One of them sneered, "You dare to come back after running away? People without abilities are just despicable."
Although the other students cared about Ango, they were afraid of Hai Weil and the two outstanding students, so they could only look at him with worry.
Only Ace couldn't stand it anymore and argued with him, stiffening his neck: "What do you know! Lin Yaoxin fell ill yesterday, and his brother had no choice but to ask Dr. An to come home and help take care of him. He also helped him get some leave. He wasn't running away!"
"Move aside, what happened?" As soon as Principal Meng spoke, the students looked back.
"It just so happens that the principal and the bishop are here. Let's be witnesses. Doctor An broke his promise yesterday and deserted the battlefield. Now shouldn't he accept the defeat?" Hai Weil said to the two of them.
Principal Meng's face became even more embarrassed. Owen, who was standing by, saw the mess in the infirmary and frowned. He looked at Principal Meng with displeasure and asked, "Is this the environment in your school's infirmary?"
"No matter how myopia I have, I can't give you a passing grade in your assessment."
Principal Meng said in panic: "Just now, didn't we agree on..."
"Just now! I didn't see you like this just now!" Owen's displeasure was obvious.
Principal Meng was so angry that his back teeth were about to break. How could he not know what Owen meant? This would probably require a huge sum of money to suppress this matter. Therefore, he glared at Hai Weier angrily: "Teacher Hai Weier, let's not talk about the bet competition for now. You messed up the health room like this. If there is any problem with the school assessment, shouldn't you also take responsibility?"
Hai Weier sneered, clearly disdainful of this. He folded his arms across his chest and said, "Principal, this is none of my business. It's because you hired ordinary people to work with us extraordinary people that the school is getting worse and worse. Anyway, I'm going to a good school in Morino City soon. I might as well tell you that these two B-level students will go with me, but before I leave, I want to see her... bow her head and apologize to me."
Then he turned to Bishop Owen and said, "Your Excellency, only those favored by the gods can gain power. Shouldn't ordinary people like me be punished for disrespecting the gods?"
Ango once again became the focus of everyone's attention.
The rational choice is to suppress the matter and reduce other people's attention so that her identity will not be exposed.
But can she bear it?
Ango turned decisively, his eyes dark and sharp, like a hawk squinting at its prey. "I was busy yesterday and couldn't keep the appointment. How about we end it now? Since you've decided to leave this school, the stakes aren't about staying or leaving. If I win, you will restore this room to its original state and compensate for all the damage caused by your actions."
Haiweier blew a loud whistle. "You have courage. If you lose, you must kowtow to me, apologize, and leave Sun Town."
Ango waved his hand and walked towards the shooting range. "I can't lose."
No one noticed that someone in Ango's shadow in the sunlight also whistled: "Comparing shooting with a Beyonder with tracking abilities...haha."
The one hiding in her shadow is naturally the watcher Xi Sen.
And Ango's extraordinary ability is the tracking eye, which moves towards the target without stopping.
