20 Buddha Eyes
Three days later, at the Hong Kong Island Police University faculty apartment.
"Zhou Yun, you can't escape my grasp. I will turn you into the most perfect doll. Look, these are all dresses I picked out for you. Which one do you like?"
Pan Fei grinned wickedly, put on surgical gloves, and slowly walked towards Zhou Yun.
Zhou Yun's hands were tied behind her back. This time, she couldn't untie the ropes, and she was so anxious that sweat beaded on her forehead...
What's going on? Didn't I already wake up and knock Pan Fei unconscious? How come he's still here...?
Zhou Yun panicked and shouted, "Don't come any closer!"
Pan Fei raised the scalpel and extended it towards Zhou Yun.
The tip of the knife and... Fang Chengjin's figure were reflected in Zhou Yun's pupils.
Help me, Fang Chengjin... Help me!
Fang Chengjin stood behind them, calmly observing everything with an air of superiority and arrogance.
“Zhou Yun, once he makes a move, I’ll have evidence. Don’t you want to get evidence too?”
Zhou Yun felt a chill in her heart, struggled violently, and vowed to fight Pan Fei to the death.
But as soon as I exerted my strength, a gust of wind suddenly came.
The alarm rang loudly, and Zhou Yun woke up immediately. In her dazed state, she saw a bright white ceiling.
The air is filled with the fragrance of osmanthus trees, which are planted near the dormitories on campus. They are in full bloom now, and their aroma is rich.
Sunlight streamed in through the window, illuminating the interior room completely.
Is it dawn?
The repeated ringing of the phone finally pulled Zhou Yun back to reality. She shook her head, reached for her phone on the bedside table, glanced at it, and was startled.
Zhou Yun immediately got out of bed, coughed a few times to ease the hoarseness from waking up early, then rushed to the closet to get clothes, and pressed the answer button as she did so.
Zhou Yun's tone was somewhat ingratiating.
The ending sound was drawn out, and there was also some broadcast sound from inside the classroom.
Zhou Yun was startled and immediately responded loudly.
After hanging up the phone, Zhou Yun staggered to put on her white cloth shoes and immediately ran out.
Damn it, I overslept!
**
When Zhou Yun arrived at the classroom, the bell rang, signaling the end of get out of class. She stood at the classroom door, unsure whether to go in or not.
This is a large classroom that can accommodate over a hundred people, and it's currently half full.
Fang Cheng glanced over from the podium and met Zhou Yun's gaze. Their eyes met, and Zhou Yun, feeling guilty, lowered her head and went into the classroom.
A classmate next to her was surprised and even reminded her, "Classmate, the class is over."
Another student commented, "I never expected anyone would broadcast Fang Da Shen's lectures, it's truly eye-opening!"
"Yes, everyone knows Professor Fang's classes are the hardest to get into. We're all from other majors and we all want to attend..."
There was a lot of discussion, and for the first time, Zhou Yun felt ashamed.
After most of the students in the classroom had left, Fang Chengjin stepped down from the podium, stood in front of the lecture hall, and looked up at Zhou Yun, who was sitting in the corner.
"Let's go for a walk, I have something to tell you."
Zhou Yun looked surprised, but still listened to him and followed him out of the classroom.
The two left the classroom and walked along the lake. Fang Chengjin carried his briefcase in one hand, walking at a leisurely pace. Zhou Yun followed beside him, looking somewhat nervous and uneasy.
"Why are you late this morning?" Fang Chengjin asked first.
Of course, his tone was neither cold nor indifferent, and one could not detect any emotion at all.
Zhou Yun couldn't tell if Fang Chengjin was angry, but she was his only graduate student and had even skipped class. Anyone would be angry in that situation.
Zhou Yun could only try to appease him by saying, "I had insomnia last night and didn't sleep very well. I promise it won't happen again."
Fang Chengjin then asked, "Why are you having insomnia?"
Zhou Yun replied truthfully: "Pan Fei's case."
Fang Cheng remained silent for a few seconds, then stopped walking.
Zhou Yun stopped abruptly as well.
Fang Chengjin suddenly said, "I... should apologize to you."
Zhou Yun was a little surprised.
Fang Chengjin turned around and looked at Zhou Yun, his eyes pure.
“You seemed a bit down after we came back from the mountain. I think it was because of what Pan Fei did in the basement… I thought you had been a detective for many years and would be able to handle such dangerous situations, but you seemed frightened. After I came back, I thought about it carefully and realized that I hadn’t considered things properly.”
Fang Cheng suddenly leaned forward slightly and lowered his head, their eyes meeting on the same plane.
Fang Chengjin: "I'm sorry, Zhou Yun."
The man's handsome features were reflected in Zhou Yun's pupils. She was slightly surprised, but then composed herself and looked away.
"I... I was indeed startled, but it's not your fault. I just..."
Zhou Yun couldn't quite explain it. Actually, she felt a little uncomfortable, but Fang Chengjin was her current mentor, so what could she blame?
Fang Chengjin: "That day, I saw you being held hostage by Pan Fei from the second floor of my room. I didn't rush to save you immediately. I went to Pan Fei's room first, found the machine that connected the signal, and called the police. Then, following the clues, I learned that there was something wrong with the well. I've always wondered how this manor communicates with the outside world; it's impossible with just that bridge outside. So, I let Pan Fei hold you hostage. I stayed at the bottom of the well, just in case Pan Fei did something to harm you. But you're smart; you knew how to stall for time. Zhou Yun, it was wrong of me not to tell you beforehand. If I had told you earlier, you probably wouldn't be so scared."
Ultimately, Fang Chengjin overlooked Zhou Yun's feelings.
After a long while, Zhou Yun did not respond.
Fang Chengjin turned around and looked at her back.
The air was filled with Zhou Yun's unique scent, a scent that made Fang Chengjin somewhat uneasy.
He even started to worry that Zhou Yun might drop out of school.
"after."
Zhou Yun spoke up.
Fang Cheng listened attentively.
"From now on, you must tell me in advance."
Zhou Yun turned around and met his gaze.
"My fear stemmed from feeling isolated and helpless at the time. If I had known you were watching me from behind, I probably wouldn't have panicked so much."
Just like teammates, Zhou Yun would always tell her colleagues in advance about any plans she made, so that they wouldn't be too afraid to face the criminals.
Fang Cheng breathed a sigh of relief. "Okay, I promise you."
His voice was firm and powerful.
After speaking, Fang Chengjin gazed at her intently, his eyes seeming to soften with an indescribable tenderness.
Zhou Yun avoided eye contact and subconsciously gripped her sleeves tightly. "I'm going to the library to read first."
After saying that, Zhou Yun ran away like a little rabbit.
She was physically strong, and the more she ran, the faster she went.
Fang Chengjin watched from behind, and suddenly the corner of his lips curled up slightly.
**
Zhou Yun hadn't been reading at the library for very long when she received a phone call.
On the other end of the phone was her mother, Qin Shuming.
In order not to disturb the quiet of the library, Zhou Yun had no choice but to leave the library and answer the phone at the entrance.
"Hello, Mom."
The library of the Hong Kong Island Police University is located in the very center of the campus, in the main square. Even standing at the entrance, gusts of autumn wind can be heard whistling past.
Upon hearing this, Zhou Yun frowned slightly.
Zhou Yun suddenly understood.
The Devil's Mountain case involved a wide range of issues. Lin Long was accompanied by a newspaper reporter at the time, who presumably took photos of her.
Zhou Yun was at a loss, thinking about how to explain, but before she could speak, Qin Shuming's voice came again.
Upon hearing this, Zhou Yun's pupils widened, and she blinked.
Good heavens, Mom, you can't just launch a surprise attack like this.
Zhou Yun felt like dying.
**
After hanging up the phone, Zhou Yun had no choice but to go to the school gate to wait for Qin Shuming's arrival.
The distance from Hong Kong Island Airport to the school is not far; it takes only half an hour by taxi.
Soon, from a distance, Zhou Yun saw Qin Shuming get out of a taxi.
Zhou Yun quickly went over to greet them and helped carry their luggage.
"Mom, this is too sudden. I've already booked a hotel nearby for you. Let's go to the hotel to drop off our luggage first, and then I'll take you out for a meal."
Qin Shuming pushed Zhou Yun's hand away, saying, "We can just eat at school."
These words seem to genuinely aim to verify whether Zhou Yun is a current student.
Zhou Yun facepalmed. "Mom, I'm already so old. If I really came to Hong Kong Island to handle a case, I would have just told you directly. Why would I lie and say I'm here to study? That lie would be too big for me to cover up. Besides, I already verified the admission notice for you!"
Qin Shuming, with her short hair and bangs, looked energetic. "I don't care. I've never been to Hong Kong Island before. What's wrong with treating an old lady on vacation?"
Zhou Yun sighed, resigned to her fate. "Alright, alright, let's go inside the school to eat now."
Fortunately, there is a Western restaurant on campus, with prices similar to those outside, and it's known as the Rolls-Royce of the student body.
Zhou Yun decided to bring Qin Shuming here for dinner.
As soon as Qin Shuming entered the restaurant, she saw many student couples eating steak.
Qin Shuming teased, "Yunyun, are you in a relationship? You're even eating at this restaurant..."
Zhou Yun sighed, shook her head, and chose a nearby two-person table to sit down and eat.
"Okay, Mom, stop teasing me. I'm here to study properly, so don't think about anything else."
Qin Shuming sat down and said earnestly, "Yunyun, you are my only daughter now. Don't make me worry anymore. I just hope you can find a good family and have a healthy baby. That would make me happy."
Qin Shuming is fifty-six years old. Fine lines are visible at the corners of her eyes, and even some gray hairs have appeared at her temples.
Looking at that face, Zhou Yun couldn't bring herself to refuse.
She knew that Qin Shuming's greatest fear for the rest of her life was that she and her sister would disappear like that.
The elderly bury their children.
