Mother and son lack affection
Liu Jianchun thought for a moment and decided to tell the truth.
No matter how bad their relationship was, she was still his mother. Once she left, Jian Zhaonan would be completely without parents in this world.
When Jian Zhaonan heard the bad news, he didn't react much at first. Perhaps he had already expected such a day to come. Since the car accident, her physical condition has been fluctuating, and she has been issued a critical illness notice more than once.
Just when Liu Jianchun thought he wasn't going to see her for the last time, he suddenly asked hoarsely, "Go ask for me, how much longer it will take?"
She stole a glance at him and noticed that his eyes were wet.
She knew what he meant and called the doctor to help him remove the needle. Although the time for treatment had not yet come, he was much better than before and had no problem walking normally.
The doctor didn't know what was going on. He kept nagging while removing the needle, saying that if he didn't treat his back injury seriously, it might never be healed and he would be disabled for life. Not to mention playing basketball, he might have to use a wheelchair in a few years.
The doctor became more and more stern in his words, and he wanted to grab Jian Zhaonan and ask him to sign a guarantee. However, Jian Zhaonan didn't care about the doctor's words, and even blamed him impatiently, asking if he could be faster.
Listening to the two chatting, she felt indescribable discomfort in her heart. She remembered that his physical fitness had always been very good. He had made it from the provincial team to the first team with almost no injuries along the way. It had only been a few years. How could he have exhausted his body to this extent?
As soon as he took out all the silver needles, he was in a hurry to get dressed and leave. Apart from helping him, she couldn't say much.
The two rushed to the hospital as fast as they could, encountering three or four green lights along the way and having no problems. But even so, when they arrived, they heard crying sounds coming from the ward.
She heard the sound of crying and stopped.
"Do you still want to go in?"
The person inside was already crying breathlessly. He probably didn't have the chance to see her for the last time. He knew better than her what kind of people his relatives were. In this situation, was it necessary to take the initiative to walk into the tiger's mouth?
Jian Zhaonan seemed not to hear what she was saying, and just murmured: "She really doesn't want to see me..."
"Are you still going in?" she asked again.
"I have to go." He turned to look at her, "If you don't want to cause trouble, just wait for me downstairs. I'll come find you after I finish dealing with things here."
"I'll accompany you." She took his arm and looked at him with a firm gaze.
Since he wasn't afraid, there was no need for her, an outsider, to be afraid. She felt that if she were to abandon him at this moment, leaving him to face all this alone, he would be truly pitiful.
He did not refuse, but gently pulled her hand away from his, interlocked their fingers, and led her into the ward naturally.
There were two beds in the ward. The bed by the window was surrounded by mourning relatives, and it was impossible to see who was lying on the bed. Jian Zhaonan's mother was lying quietly on the other side, and the monitor placed next to her was showing her heartbeat curve.
The heartbeat is steady and regular.
Jian Zhaonan breathed a sigh of relief, but Liu Jianchun felt an invisible pressure.
If she were already gone, these relatives would simply be pestering them again, just like last time. But if she were still alive, would Jian Zhaonan's conscience be burdened with a huge sense of guilt because of what he had seen today? Would he believe that his mother's early death was due to his lack of filial piety, his refusal to pay for the medical expenses of this long-lost mother...even though this mother had hardly ever fulfilled her responsibilities as a mother.
"elder brother?"
A young man's clear voice came from outside the door. Following the sound, a boy was standing at the door. He should be Jian Zhaonan's half-brother.
The boy was holding a bowl of porridge in his hand and looked a little reserved when he saw the two people standing in the room.
"Brother, it was my uncle and the others who asked me to do that last time. He said that if I asked you for money, I could have surgery for Mom." The boy stood at the door with his lunch box, not knowing whether he should go in.
Even if Jian Zhaonan was feeling resentful, he didn't intend to vent it on the boy in front of him. This was the first time he saw his younger brother, so he looked him up and down before calmly asking, "Why aren't you going to school?"
"I'm on vacation. My uncle asked me to take care of Mom. He said it would save us money on hiring a nurse."
"She... nothing happened today?" Looking at his mother who was temporarily fine, and his timid brother in front of him, Jian Zhaonan felt vaguely that he had been deceived.
My younger brother shook his head in bewilderment, apparently unaware of the "death" phone call. The caller was a middle-aged man, most likely the uncle.
He suppressed his anger and glanced at his mother on the bed: "How is she... doing recently?"
"Fortunately, I can stay awake for a while at night. But the doctor keeps coming to urge me, saying that if I don't have surgery, my life might be in danger."
Before my brother could finish his words, the family members not far away began to wail again. Crying is a powerful tool for heightening the atmosphere, easily casting a pall over anyone's heart.
"Brother, can you save Mom?" The younger brother mustered up the courage to speak his mind. "I don't want her to die. Mom originally said she would take me out to play after I finished my final exams. I don't want to travel anymore. I want Mom."
Jian Zhaonan was silent.
This was supposed to be a drama of deep love between mother and son, but in his eyes it was extremely ironic.
He believed his mother was simply heartless, abandoning him at the age of three and running away from home. For a long time after her departure, she had no contact with him, leaving him with a completely blank memory of her. It wasn't until he was selected for the provincial team and became a renowned figure that his mother reconnected. Even then, she never offered him any emotional or financial support.
He could actually understand her. He felt that no matter who it was, if they met a man who was a domestic abuser like his father, they would want to escape, and might even hate the man and everyone in him, transferring their hatred to their children.
But his not hating her was conditional. If he had never known how good she was to her little son...
Seeing that Jian Zhaonan was reluctant to agree to his request, the boy burst into tears.
Liu Jianchun, who was standing by, couldn't bear to watch and said impatiently: "Why are you crying? Your mother is not dead yet!"
The boy held back his tears, sobbed and looked up at Jian Zhaonan, as if he felt that his elder brother was easier to talk to than this fierce woman.
Liu Jianchun was not used to this kid at all: "Why are you looking at him? Look at me."
The younger brother could only turn to her with grievance.
"Brother, you have to be reasonable in everything you do. Your mother was in a car accident and needs surgery. Why do you have to ask him for money? Why don't you ask the driver who caused the accident? You are just bullying the weak and afraid of the strong. You are afraid that you can't sue the driver in court, so you think he is soft-hearted and easy to talk to, so you bully him."
Liu Jianchun's few words left his brother speechless.
She wanted to continue to criticize, but was stopped by Jian Zhaonan.
Athletes are public figures after all, and when there are outsiders in the ward, they have to take their image into consideration.
The younger brother felt extremely aggrieved. He didn't understand where he had gone wrong. He just wanted his mother to have the surgery and return home to be his mother after she recovered. But the beautiful sister in front of him had a fierce look in her eyes and even fiercer words, so he didn't dare to confront her at all.
My younger brother sat down on a chair beside the bed, opened his lunch box, picked up the lunch box and poured porridge into his mouth, crying while eating. The tears finally fell into the porridge and were eaten by him.
Halfway through drinking, he remembered that there were two other people. Holding the half bowl of porridge, he stared at the two people blankly.
Liu Jianchun said coldly, "You only remembered us when you were almost done drinking. Your invitation is really hypocritical."
As she spoke, she looked at the boy. He was dressed simply and had only a bowl of porridge for dinner without even ordering any side dishes. She thought he must not be well off, so she softened her heart and asked, "How can you be full with just a bowl of porridge?"
The younger brother was scared by her scolding and only dared to nod but not shake his head.
She dealt with a bunch of kids all day long, and she knew he was lying just by looking at his expression. She sighed helplessly and gave Jian Zhaonan a look: "You stay by his bed for a while, I'll take him downstairs and get something else to eat."
The younger brother followed Liu Jianchun downstairs tremblingly.
In just a few minutes, his impression of her changed from a beautiful sister to a shrew, and from a shrew to a moody woman.
He hugged his arms tightly to protect himself in case Liu Jianchun did anything bad to him again.
But she didn't do anything bad. She just went to the KFC opposite the hospital and bought him a hamburger and a Coke. She asked him if he wanted to eat anything else. He was so scared that he quickly shook his head and wolfed down the hamburger.
The hamburger was not precious, and he was not overly moved by it, but he really didn't want to be alone with this woman anymore. He just wanted to finish eating quickly and go back to his mother.
It only took a dozen minutes to go downstairs to buy a hamburger. When Liu Jianchun walked back to the ward, the atmosphere in the ward had completely changed.
The woman in the next bed finally stopped crying and began to arrange the old man's funeral. The children, who had been wiping away tears a moment ago, were now discussing how much the house in their hometown could sell for and how the money should be divided. The mention of dividing the money seemed to ease the sadness of their mother's death.
Jian Zhaonan's expression was also very unnatural. When he saw her coming, he dragged her away without saying a word.
Although Liu Jianchun didn't know what had happened in the ward just now, she knew that Jian Zhaonan was definitely very angry now. He was even more angry when he learned that she wanted to reconcile with Xie Yu. Because her reconciliation with Xie Yu was predictable, but what he had just encountered must have been beyond his expectations.
He was walking in front and she was jogging behind him. They walked all the way to the intersection without stopping. When she saw the red light, she even tried to run it. Fortunately, Liu Jianchun grabbed him in time.
"Xiao Nan, what's wrong with you?"
He glanced at her angrily: "Didn't you say you wouldn't call me 'Xiao Nan' anymore?"
She was so angry that she laughed. Why was she still entangled in these issues at this time? He really hasn't grown up yet...
She didn't stand at the intersection and ask, but stopped a car first and continued questioning after getting in.
Jian Zhaonan closed his eyes as soon as he got on the car, as if he was deliberately hiding the discomfort in his heart.
"She woke up after you guys left."
Liu Jianchun was stunned.
Is this her his mother?
"She told me she didn't have much time left. Her current husband was a loser. When he heard she'd been in a car accident and needed surgery, he vanished from the world and no one could find him. If she died, she wanted me to take good care of her son. She even threatened to have her son's tube removed, forcing me to sign a written agreement."
Her eyes widened in surprise: "You agreed?"
"I didn't agree."
"Then she..." She didn't dare to say the rest of the words.
"She doesn't dare to die. She just wants to use this to force me."
He opened his eyes, they were red, and even if he tried hard, he couldn't stop the tears from flowing.
His alcoholic and domestically violent father passed away from a heart attack two years ago. Unexpectedly, his only mother in the world only regarded him as a tool to raise her son.
