Chapter 157 A Choice Deep Within the Rift

"Damn it, just as I thought!" Lu Zhaoming grabbed Liu Gang and moved with lightning speed, plunging into a hidden corner filled with abandoned pipes before the enemies who were about to surround them could react.

Almost the instant they hid, the flow of time returned to normal.

Several low shouts and chaotic footsteps came from outside, clearly indicating that the ambushing enemy had missed their target.

Lu Zhaoming tightly covered Liu Gang's mouth, lowered his voice, and his eyes were sharp as knives: "What did you just hear?!"

Liu Gang shuddered, clutching his head in agony, veins bulging on his forehead, large beads of sweat rolling down his face: "They...they're talking to me...making me...making me ruin your plans...I...I can't control myself..."

Lu Zhaoming looked at his pained expression with cold eyes, but he understood everything in his heart.

The Ghost Doctor's psychological suggestion device was indeed more troublesome than he had imagined; it was no longer something that could be solved by simple signal interference.

What other tricks is this old fox hiding?

He took a deep breath, his mind racing as he considered countermeasures.

"Don't make a sound, they haven't gone far yet." Lu Zhaoming's voice was extremely low, carrying an unquestionable command.

Damn it, these bastards are like flies, you can't get rid of them!

Lu Zhaoming cursed inwardly, his ears as sharp as radar, picking up the fading footsteps and whispers outside. The rustling sounds were like the footsteps of death slowly approaching, sending chills down his spine.

He figured the enemy had been fooled for the time being, and was planning how to take Liu Gang, this "time bomb," and make a quick getaway to a safe place to reconsider.

The waters of this white-robed base are deeper than he imagined. Forcing his way into the core area is like lighting a lamp in a latrine—it's suicide!

Just as he made up his mind to pull Liu Gang away through another, more hidden rat tunnel—a narrow passage that even rats would shake their heads and say, "Too narrow, buddy"—the familiar system interface in his mind popped up with a glittering golden window, almost blinding him.

"[Congratulations, host! A new type of experimental data fluctuation has been detected nearby. After analysis, a new Judgment skill, 'Memory Restoration,' will be unlocked!]"

"Memory restoration?!" Lu Zhaoming's eyes lit up instantly, feeling as refreshed as drinking ice-cold plum juice on a sweltering summer day!

Holy crap, this skill is like a perfect pillow when you're sleepy, and it's even made of latex!

If Liu Gang's altered memories could be repaired, wouldn't the Ghost Doctor's control become a complete joke?

But the next line of fine print in the system delivered another chilling blow: "[Note: Obtaining this experimental data requires close access to the White Coat Organization's core database. Risk level: Extremely high! So high you'll question your existence!]"

Core database?

That's like a VIP room in a den of dragons and tigers—easy to get in, hard to get out, and you might even need a permanent residence permit!

Lu Zhaoming's brows furrowed into a knot, his fingertips unconsciously tapping on the cold pipe beside him, producing a soft "tap-tap" sound that was particularly jarring in the deathly silence.

The air seemed to freeze, with only his and Liu Gang's heavy breathing echoing in the narrow space, like two dilapidated blowers.

Going there would mean a slim chance of survival, or even certain death; not going would mean Liu Gang would be completely ruined, and he'd have to call him "Comrade, the organization sent me" every time they met.

The silence, lasting only a few seconds, felt as long as waiting for my girlfriend to put on makeup and leave the house.

Lu Zhaoming gritted his teeth, a glint of crazed gambler's light flashing in his eyes. That cool, roguish charm returned, and he grinned like a brat about to blow up a latrine: "Damn it, fortune favors the bold! System, give me directions to the nearest database! This time, let's go big! If we lose, we'll just be heroes again in eighteen years; if we win, we'll get brothels and young models!"

However, just as he made up his mind and before his bold words could fully dissipate in the air, Liu Gang next to him suddenly shuddered, as if he had been violently struck by an invisible electric current!

"Ugh—" Liu Gang let out a suppressed groan of pain, suddenly breaking free from Lu Zhaoming's hand that he had instinctively gripped.

The force was outrageous; Lu Zhaoming felt as if his wrist bones were about to be crushed, and he was almost thrown into a Thomas full twist by the force of the blow.

"Liu Gang, what the hell are you doing?!" Alarm bells rang in Lu Zhaoming's mind, and an ominous premonition of "Holy crap, this is bad" instantly enveloped his entire body, making him even more panicked than when he saw the system prompt "low battery".

Liu Gang's eyes were bloodshot and filled with terrifying veins. His face showed extreme pain and struggle, as if two little people were playing tug-of-war in his head.

He staggered like a drunken zombie, and suddenly turned around and rushed out in the direction the enemy had just searched, which was also the direction where the core database was located!

That speed was faster than a rabbit seeing an eagle!

In the night wind, only a muffled, yet seemingly desperate and apologetic, word drifted by:

"I'm sorry... Zhaoming..."

Lu Zhaoming's pupils suddenly contracted, and his outstretched hand froze in mid-air, only grasping a handful of cold air.
