Lu Zhaoming made a shushing gesture, and Su Li immediately understood. Her alluring figure leaned against the wall as lightly as a cat, while Xiao Die clung tightly to Lu Zhaoming's clothes, trembling.
The footsteps grew closer and clearer, sounding particularly jarring in the silent, abandoned warehouse.
Lu Zhaoming squinted and looked out through a hole in the wall.
A hunched figure could be seen cautiously approaching the warehouse entrance.
The figure, with shifty eyes and a pointed mouth and monkey-like face, was none other than the scavenger leader he had seen in the laboratory before—Brother Rat.
Why did this mouse come to my door on its own?
Lu Zhaoming was puzzled, but he gripped the dagger in his hand even tighter.
The warehouse door creaked open, and Brother Mouse peeked in, his little eyes looking around. When he saw Lu Zhaoming, his face immediately lit up with a fawning smile.
"Oh, Master Lu, it's like finding a needle in a haystack! I've finally found you!"
Lu Zhaoming sneered and slowly emerged from the shadows, the dagger in his hand gleaming coldly in the dim light.
"Brother Mouse, you've got some nerve coming to find me? What, do you have a death wish?"
Su Li also came up and looked Rat Brother up and down. "Hey, isn't this Rat Brother? What's up? Here to deliver our heads?"
Brother Mouse was so frightened that he trembled and quickly waved his hand.
"No, no, Mr. Lu, Sister Su, I've come today to apologize!"
"To plead guilty with a bundle of thorns on one's back?" Lu Zhaoming raised an eyebrow, looking at him with interest.
"What wrong have you done that you need to apologize with a bundle of thorns on your back?"
Brother Mouse fell to his knees with a thud, his face contorted with grief, and said, "Master Lu, Sister Su, I deserve to die! I shouldn't have risked my life for those white-robed men for a few stinking bucks, providing them with experimental materials. I was blinded by greed, I was possessed by a demon, I..."
"Alright, alright, stop howling, it's giving me a headache," Lu Zhaoming interrupted him impatiently.
"Get to the point, what exactly do you want to do here?"
"Master Lu, I truly repent! I know those white-robed men are utterly depraved, committing heinous acts. My conscience has been uneasy, keeping me awake at night, so I've come to confess to you today, hoping to gain your forgiveness," Brother Rat said, tears streaming down his face.
"Confess?" Lu Zhaoming sneered.
"What do you want to confess? Confess how many heinous things you've done over the years? Confess how many innocent people you've killed?"
Brother Mouse was speechless after being questioned by Lu Zhaoming and could only keep kowtowing.
"Mr. Lu, I was wrong, I really know I was wrong. Please give me a chance to make amends!"
"An opportunity?" Lu Zhaoming stroked his chin, pondering for a moment.
"Alright, I can give you a chance. But whether you can seize it depends on your own performance."
"Master Lu, you said it, as long as I can do it, I will go through fire and water without hesitation!" Brother Rat quickly pledged his loyalty.
“Very good.” Lu Zhaoming nodded in satisfaction.
"Since you're so sincere, then tell me, what is the White Coat's plan? Why are they capturing so many people to experiment on?"
Brother Rat dared not hide anything and quickly said, "Master Lu, those white-robed men are researching a drug called 'gene fusion agent.' It is said that this drug can greatly enhance human potential, giving people superhuman strength and speed."
"Gene fusion agent?" Lu Zhaoming frowned.
"It sounds like some kind of cutting-edge technology."
“That’s right. It’s said that this drug was unearthed by the White Robe from an ancient ruin. I’m not entirely sure about the exact mechanism of action,” said Brother Rat. “However, I do know that this drug has an extremely high failure rate and requires a large number of test subjects as samples, which is why they’re willing to go to any lengths to capture people.”
"So, those people who were captured were just guinea pigs?" Su Li said coldly, her tone tinged with anger.
"You could say that..." Brother Mouse glanced at Su Li cautiously, not daring to say anything more.
"What have they been up to recently?" Lu Zhaoming continued to ask.
"I heard that the White Robes are preparing to conduct a large-scale test soon, during which more innocent people will be captured," said Brother Rat. "They plan to conduct a large-scale 'screening' in an abandoned factory outside the city in three days, capturing those survivors who meet the criteria to conduct experiments."
"Three days later? An abandoned factory?" Lu Zhaoming's eyes narrowed.
"It seems we must act before them."
“Master Lu, I know you definitely want to stop them. If you don’t mind, I can help you sneak back into the core area of the laboratory,” Brother Rat said cautiously.
"Oh? How will you help us?" Lu Zhaoming looked at him with interest.
“I know there’s a backup exit on the third basement level of the lab, known only to a few people. I can take you in there and catch them off guard,” said Brother Rat.
Lu Zhaoming stroked his chin, weighing the pros and cons.
What Brother Mouse said seemed to make some sense, but who knows if he was playing tricks?
"How can you prove you're not lying to us?" Lu Zhaoming asked coldly.
"Master Lu, I can guarantee it with my life! If I dare to play any tricks, may I be struck by lightning and die a horrible death!" Brother Rat raised his hands and said with great conviction.
Lu Zhaoming stared at Brother Rat for a long time before finally nodding.
"Alright, I can trust you this once. But I'm warning you, if you dare to play any tricks, you'll face the consequences!"
