Chapter 639: Confidential
East coast of Plitvice Island, Tivian.
In the dark night, at the border between the southern and eastern parts of Tivian, in an alley that deviates from the main road, the alley is brightly lit and bustling with people.
This is an alley with not very good sanitary conditions. The ground is full of potholes. Countless people in different clothes walk on it and come and go. Various temporary gas lamps are hung on both sides of the road, flashing lights of different brightness. In the inconspicuous corners at the edge of the alley, there are many vagrants in ragged clothes huddled there. Some of them look at the flow of people in front of them with indifference, and some put their hats upside down on the ground with pleading faces.
On both sides of the alley, there were many women wearing heavy makeup and dressed gorgeously. They were big and small, with a wide age range, but most of them were young. Each of them held a flower in their hands, facing the flow of people in front of them, winking and showing their charm. If anyone passing by made a fuss with one of these women, they would go up to them and ask for the price of the flower. If the two had agreed, they would open the door and walk into the building behind them.
Among the buildings on both sides of this alley, most are hotels, and there are occasionally some bars and restaurants. In a bar with slightly luxurious decoration, a man is sitting in a seat by the window, drinking and reading a newspaper in his hand.
The man was about 27 or 28 years old, wearing a logo suit, a dark red tie, and a top hat placed on the table beside him. He had short brown hair and a logo face, revealing a gentle and elegant demeanor. Combined with his clothes, people could tell at a glance that he was a gentleman of status. His overall style was slightly out of place in this chaotic alley, as if he shouldn't be here.
The man was scanning the words on the newspaper on the table while leisurely savoring the red wine in the glass in his hand. He had a completely contented expression. At this time, there was another person standing on the aisle next to the man. It was an old woman.
"Mr. Vaughn... listen to me, Feiya is also a poor girl. Her father was killed when he was caught in a machine while working in the factory, and her mother's legs were broken when she was asking for compensation. She had to take care of an adult and two younger brothers at such a young age. She had no choice but to come into this world and make a living with her little beauty. She barely managed to support her family. Among all the girls in our place, she is one of the most miserable ones..."
The old woman standing next to the man bent down slightly and spoke slowly in an earnest tone, but the man called Vaughan did not look at the old woman. He just spoke while drinking red wine.
"Ah... Feiya... is a girl with a pretty face and a slim body. I never thought she would have such a miserable fate. The world is so unpredictable..." Vaughan said calmly, without any fluctuation in his expression. Seeing Vaughan's response, the old woman was slightly stunned, and then continued to speak.
"Mr. Vaughn... since you know that it's not easy for Feiya, shouldn't you..."
"Should you what? Grandma Mel." Vaughn said, and then glanced at the old woman coldly. The old woman seemed to feel a trace of fear from this look, and she took a step back in fright. Then she stabilized herself a little and continued to speak.
"You should... you should give us some medical expenses... After you spent the night with her last time and left, Feiya almost died. The child was bleeding all over the bed and was dying. We spent a lot of effort to save her. Now the child is still lying in the hospital. Not only can she not get out of bed, but the daily treatment fee is also a lot...
"Her family has already spent all their own money, and now we are the ones who are paying for it. But we are also doing business, and it is impossible for us to leave it like this. Mr. Vaughan, you are also a rich man... Can you see if you can... give her some help?"
The old woman spoke to Vaughan earnestly, and Vaughan responded softly without changing his expression.
"What does Feiya's matter have to do with me? I have already paid her the contract money. I have nothing to do with her anymore. What does it have to do with me if she is in the hospital?"
"But, but Fia is because of you..."
"Because of me? People like you should all be aware of the risks you face. If you can't even withstand a little teasing, then you'd better not live in this world. Surviving with such a weak body is a pain in itself. The sooner you understand it, the sooner..." Vaughn said as he glared at the old woman with a dangerous look. The old woman was so angry after hearing his words that she was ready to say something more, but after being glared at by the other party with that dangerous look, she couldn't help but be speechless.
"This...Mr. Vaughan...ah..."
Just as the old woman felt hopeless and was about to leave with a sigh, Vaughn's dangerous eyes suddenly changed, becoming gentle and relaxed. After taking a sip of red wine, he spoke again.
"Even though Feiya couldn't even bear that little bit of torture, it's not a pity that she died. But when I thought about it, I played with her well at first, and she also pleased me.
"I usually don't help others casually, but today I'm in a good mood, so I'll be merciful and give you some." Vaughan took out a wallet from his clothes, opened it, and took out a two-pound note and handed it to the old woman. The old woman was stunned when she saw the money. She stood there for a while and said in disbelief.
"Ah... this... there are so many! Mr. Vaughan! Thank you for your kindness! Thank you! Thank you..." Looking at the banknotes in Vaughan's hand, the old woman was stunned for a moment, and then spoke quickly. Obviously, he himself did not expect Vaughan's attitude to change so quickly.
"Quickly collect the things before I get into a bad mood... Oh, take this too, and give it back to that girl. It will help her recover a little."
When the old woman took the banknotes from Vaughan with trembling hands, Vaughan took out something from his body. Upon closer inspection, it was a small piece of dried meat. Although the old woman looked confused after seeing the dried meat, she still took it.
"Thank you Mr. Vaughan for your concern. On Holy Mother's Day, Fia will surely be well again soon. May the Holy Mother bless you..." After saying this, she took the jerky from Vaughan and praised him a few more words before saying goodbye and leaving. For a moment, only Vaughan was left sitting at the table, continuing to taste red wine.
After tipping the other people, Vaughn continued to drink at his seat with good interest. While drinking, he occasionally glanced around the bar and took in the lively scene. When his eyes caught sight of a few hostesses who seemed to be pointing at him from a distance, they all avoided Vaughn's gaze in fear and quietly fled to other places.
Faced with such a scene, Vaughn was not angry. He was in a good mood that day and did not bother with these hostesses. Instead, he continued to taste the red wine leisurely. After a while, a figure quickly approached him along the aisle and came to his table.
"Excuse me, sir, can you share the table with me?"
A voice came from beside Vaughn. Vaughn turned around after hearing it. What he saw next was a man wearing a windbreaker, with a thin face, deep eyes, a hooked nose, and a short hat. He was standing there looking at him, waiting for an answer.
Listening to the man's words, Vaughn looked around again and found that there were obviously no other seats in the crowded bar.
If it were in the past, Vaughn would have rejected such a request without hesitation. He had no reason to have close contact with strangers. However, Vaughn was in a bad mood that day and did not care about it.
"Okay, you can just sit down."
"Thank you sir, may the Virgin Mary bless you."
