Chapter 14 Lease
Looking at the two cups of black tea brought by the waiter at the counter, Dorothy pursed her lips and said.
"Thank you for your thoughtfulness, boss. But I think we should skip the tea. My brother and I just had a full meal and are in no condition to drink anything else. Don't you think so, Greg?"
Dorothy said this while looking at Greg beside her. Greg, who was casually flipping through an old magazine, came to his senses and nodded yes after hearing this.
"Yeah, the juice in that restaurant was pretty good. I accidentally drank a little too much. Now I don't feel like drinking anything."
Listening to Dorothy's brother and sister's response, the clerk behind the counter looked a little embarrassed. He glanced at Clifford who was looking for a book among the bookshelves in the distance.
"Boss...this..."
"Haha... it's okay if the customer says he doesn't want to drink. Just bring the tea over. We can both taste it later." Clifford, who was looking for a book, said to the waiter with a smile. After hearing Clifford's words, the waiter nodded and brought the tea over.
Then Clifford continued to look for the book. From an angle where no one could see him, Clifford's expression suddenly became gloomy.
"Damn it... You didn't even want to drink... And you didn't expect that man to be Gregos. Now I can't force him. I can't let such a good opportunity slip away so easily..."
Thinking this in his mind, Clifford glanced at Dorothy not far away from the corner of his eye, then looked at the old book in his hand, and then he made a decision in his heart.
Then, Clifford said with a surprised look.
"Oh my... there are a few books that don't seem to be here. Sorry, I need to look at them from above. Please wait a moment, I'll be right back."
"Well, we'll wait here." Dorothy nodded and said, then Clifford immediately walked up the stairs from behind the counter and soon arrived on the third floor.
Then, Clifford came to the wall and turned a candlestick mechanism. A cabinet silently rotated and opened, revealing a dim dark room. Clifford walked into the dark room and picked up a finger-thick, red-covered book from a desk.
"Since you don't want to drink the medicine, you should read some books. Studious girl, feel the temptation of the 'cup'..."
As he thought about it, Clifford opened the book, tore off the first few pages, and then put them between one of the books in his arms.
After that, Clifford closed the dark room and came out. After finding a few more books on the bookshelf in the house, Clifford went downstairs with a pile of books. After seeing Dorothy and her siblings again, he laughed again.
"Haha... Sorry to have kept you waiting for so long. The books you want are here, little girl." As he spoke, Clifford put the book in his hand on the counter with a smile.
Dorothy looked through the titles of the books one by one and said with some confusion.
"Well, they are indeed the books I want, but why are there a few missing?"
"Well... I'm sorry, many of the books here are rare, so they are only rented and not sold, and you can't rent too many at one time. Miss, remember to return them after you finish reading these, and then rent other books." Clifford continued, and Dorothy nodded after listening to his words.
"Yeah... that's true. After all, rare books can't be sold just like that. Now... Greg, please help pay for it."
"Oh, are you done? Then it's my turn."
As he spoke, Greg began to pay. Normally, Dorothy had no financial ability at the moment, so naturally, as the parent, Greg would pay.
Then, Dorothy packed all the books on the counter into her bag, and left the bookstore with Greg. Looking at the backs of Dorothy and her brother as they left, Clifford revealed a meaningful smile.
…
Sitting in the carriage, Dorothy touched the books in her bag, then spoke to Greg.
"By the way, Greg, what do you think of the bookstore we visited just now?"
Listening to Dorothy's words, Greg thought for a moment and then spoke.
"I feel the atmosphere is a little weird, but most of the stores on White Pearl Street are like this, as if everyone has some secrets behind them, which is normal in that street. And that boss...hiss, I feel a little too enthusiastic...By the way, Dorothy, is there any problem with the book he gave you? There won't be any fakes in it..."
Greg spoke as he pondered, and Dorothy nodded in response.
"Yes, no problem. They are all the books I'm looking for."
"Really? That's good..."
…
Riding in a carriage, Dorothy and Greg went all the way along Nanyang Flower Road. After arriving home, Greg took a shower, while Dorothy went directly to her room with her bag, closed the door, and sat on her desk.
Then, he took out the old books he had rented before, opened them one by one and quickly flipped through them. Finally, when Dorothy was flipping through the third volume of "The Glorious Gospel", she found a few hidden pages in the book.
Dorothy took out all the pages, held them in her hands and looked at them carefully, then a slight smile appeared on her lips.
"Sure enough, you guys sent me a secret message..."
That’s right, what Dorothy was holding in her hand at the moment was the secret book, a fragment of a secret book of “The Cup”.
After seeing that the Holy Communion's base on White Pearl Street was actually a bookstore, Dorothy, who was thinking about how to deal with this base, came up with some other ideas.
Dorothy knew that the purpose of the Holy Communion was to corrupt Greg by corrupting herself. According to Aldridge, there were generally two ways for the "Cup" Society to corrupt people. One was drug control, and the other was drug temptation. After seeing the bookstore opened by the Holy Communion, Dorothy immediately set her mind on the second one.
How could there not be secret teachings in a bookstore that is the base of the Holy Communion?
Since the Holy Communion Society wanted to corrupt me, if I went to their doorstep to buy books, they would definitely not miss this great opportunity and would find ways to corrupt me, either using drugs or poison.
What Dorothy needs to do is to find a way to avoid the drugs so that they can only use poison identification.
That's why Dorothy insisted on taking Greg with her to the bookstore.
If Dorothy went to the bookstore alone, the crazy people in the Holy Communion might bite her directly, control her by force, and then force her to drink drugs. Even if she managed to escape, her nature as a Beyonder would be exposed.
But as long as Gregor was by his side, they would not use force because they were afraid of him. As long as he and Gregor did not eat or drink anything in the bookstore, their medicine would be useless.
Dorothy knew the truth, so it was simple for her not to eat anything. In order to prevent Greg from accidentally eating the food they prepared, Dorothy suggested in advance to find a restaurant to eat before buying books. As a result, neither brother nor sister ate the food served at the communion.
So if the Holy Communion wanted to take this opportunity to corrupt Dorothy after the drugging failed, there would be only one way.
That is poison identification... In the book rented to Dorothy, secret information was mixed in, so that Dorothy would be inadvertently distorted by the poison identification while reading, and ultimately achieve the purpose of corruption.
And this is what Dorothy wanted...
…
Emmm, everyone, it will be on the shelves tomorrow.
