Chapter 3 Letters
In the deep river valley, the cold drizzle gradually weakened. At the tragedy scene of the carriage team, Dorothy sat on the ground facing Ed's body and gasped for breath. It took her a long time to come back to her senses. When she stood up shakily, she suddenly realized an important problem.
'Oh, by the way! Where's this guy's dog?'
Thinking of Ed's two hounds, Dorothy quickly clenched the revolver in her hand and became alert to the surroundings. In her impression, the two strange hounds were just blown away and should not be dead yet. It would be bad if they got up to avenge their master. Because it was her first time shooting and killing someone, her emotions were fluctuating a lot and she didn't react to this for a while.
Dorothy held the gun and looked around. Then, with the dim light, she found the two hounds. They were lying on the river bank not far away, motionless and without even a breath, like corpses. Dorothy was stunned by the scene.
"Dead? No way... He was just blown away, but he died immediately? Can a dragon roar of unrestricted power have such power?"
Seeing the two dog corpses, Dorothy felt puzzled. However, because the appearance of the two hounds was too exaggerated and weird, and looked extremely scary, Dorothy did not think of checking them, but the doubt remained in her mind.
“Hmm… Forget about that for now, let’s think about what to do next…”
Seeing that the hound was no longer a threat, Dorothy breathed a sigh of relief and sat on the ground. She picked up a black umbrella that had fallen beside her to shelter herself from the rain, and then thought about how she should face this strange world next.
Dorothy had just traveled to this world that looked like a foreign country in the 19th century and was reborn as a girl who should have died in a car accident. Dorothy was still extremely confused and didn't know what to do for a while. The new world and new body made her feel at a loss. At this moment, she felt at a loss.
After thinking it over, she decided to follow Dorothy's original pace of life.
"Let's go to the city to look for Dorothy's brother first... After all, he is the closest blood relative I have in this world, and family members are always trustworthy and reliable... This is also the little girl's last wish..."
Sitting on the cold and wet stone with her chin supported by her hands, Dorothy thought that in Dorothy's memory, the brother whom she had never seen for a long time loved her very much when she was a child. According to Dorothy's original idea, going to live with him was a good choice... After all, no matter where you are, you must find a "home" first.
"My clothes are all wet and I'm so cold... I need to find a place to change. According to what Dorothy heard from the driver, there should be a town nearby. Let's go there first."
Dorothy was cold and hungry. She felt that she should find a place to change clothes and eat before going to the city to find her brother. According to her memory and the information she got from the previous conversation with the coachman, if she continued along the direction the carriage had been traveling, she would soon reach a town called Wokkan. Since these bandits could find a place to land, there must be a passage back to the main road in front of the river bank.
Thinking of this, Dorothy took a rest and prepared to leave. Then she thought about it and thought of other problems. That is, she had no money. She wanted to find food and accommodation, but she had no money now!
This time, Dorothy was sent to the city by a caravan that Aunt Hannah knew well. The fare and food expenses that her brother had sent were all given to the driver by Aunt Hannah, asking him to help take care of Dorothy on the way. Now the caravan was in trouble, and the money of other passengers and the driver had just been collected and put in the carriage as bait. Now the carriage and the two robbers who had taken the bait had fallen into the river.
Thinking of this, Dorothy couldn't help but pause. She stroked her chin and glanced in front of her, finally focusing her eyes on the bandit leader who was shot to the ground.
Since he is not a bandit leader, he must have some money on him...
Thinking of this, Dorothy picked up a gas lamp on the ground, ran to the corpse without saying a word and began to search it. Since she had searched other corpses before, she was used to it and did not feel much fear.
Gradually, Dorothy took out the things on Ed's body one by one, including a dagger, a deck of cards, some banknotes, a bunch of keys...
Dorothy put away the things she needed, then thought for a moment and felt that she had not licked the bag clean enough, so she continued to search it carefully several times, and found some coins, a few cigarettes, and a matchbox... Just when Dorothy felt that she had searched enough and was thinking about whether to take off Ed's suit jacket, which looked pretty good, and find a place to pawn it for money, she suddenly discovered something unusual.
She felt something between the layers of her clothes, and it felt like some cardboard.
"Is there something hidden in the lining of the clothes? It must be something good if it's hidden like this! Does it feel like private money?"
Dorothy's eyes lit up, and then she immediately pulled out a dagger and cut open Ed's clothes. Then she took out the thing she had touched before from the interlayer, and when she held it in her hand, she saw that it was two envelopes!
"Envelope? Is there a letter inside? What kind of letter is so important that you need to carry it with you in the lining of your clothes?"
Dorothy was a little disappointed to see that what she took out was not money but an envelope. Then she opened one of the envelopes with doubt, took out the letter from it, and put it under the gas lamp to observe it carefully.
There was a series of neatly written letters on the letter paper, and she was surprised to find that she could actually understand them!
"Ah... that's not right! Didn't I sacrifice the language Dorothy had learned and exchange it for Dragon Language? Why can I still understand it now?"
Dorothy wondered in amazement, in her opinion, shouldn't the sacrificed knowledge be lost? But why did she still have it?
'Perhaps... it's because the essence of knowledge is information, not objects... Information can be copied, but objects cannot. My sacrifice of knowledge does not mean that I have lost it. My imparting of knowledge to others does not make me lose that knowledge... Just now, perhaps I cannot say that I exchanged my language for the dragon language, but I have flowed the dragon language...'
Dorothy felt relieved at the thought of this possibility. She didn't have to worry about being illiterate in this world.
Then, Dorothy, feeling happy, continued to read the letter. The letter was written in Putin, which was the common language of the Putin Kingdom where Dorothy lived. The language was a typical phonetic alphabet.
The content of the letter surprised her.

Dear Mr. Edwin:
We are honored to receive your letter. According to your previous description in the letter, we can confirm that the extraordinary item you found is called Corpse Puppet Ring, which has the effect of manipulating newly dead bodies. It is indeed a wise choice for you to use it to manipulate the corpses of wild beasts. I hope you can use it to create a bigger world in Vukan Town. Of course, we also advise you not to be too ostentatious, so as not to attract the attention of the Secret Security Bureau or the Church.
We are very pleased about the intention to join the society expressed in your letter. As a street leader with extraordinary items, you are qualified to join us. We believe that with your status in the town of Wokkan, you can make the influence of the society radiate further.
We welcome you to join us, but before that, we have a small task for you to complete. This can be regarded as a test, a special test.
On the evening of April 8th, a convoy heading for Igwinter will pass by on the road from Zishan to Wokan. In the convoy there will be a girl with white hair, about thirteen years old. Catch her.
Please don't get me wrong, normally our social tests for new recruits aren't kidnappings like this, but this time it's a special case, that girl is useful to us, we should have done it ourselves, but the Secret Security Bureau has been active recently, there have been signs of hunter teams appearing in Vukan.
For the sake of prudence, we have decided not to come forward, so we need you, Mr. Edrick, to do it for us. As long as you treat this as any other normal kidnapping business, the searchers will not care about such a case without any extraordinary traces. We believe that with your professional and skilled techniques, you will be able to handle this case perfectly.
Of course, we will not let you work for nothing in the name of testing. We have prepared special rewards for this special test. This reward is very generous for you, enough to make a big leap from a newcomer who knows nothing in the extraordinary field you yearn for, and even have a considerable status in the society.
If you accept this test, please reply as soon as possible. We believe that you will not refuse this rare opportunity. I hope that you and I can enjoy a feast at the same table in the future and experience the beauty bestowed by the great blood cup together.
