Chapter 26: Questioning

The entrance to Rongfu Hall where the old lady lived was filled with maids and old women, all waiting for instructions from the old ancestor inside.

Song Wanning was called to Rongfu Hall by the old lady. Before she even entered the door, the leading mother came over to greet her and said, "Second grandma is here. The old ancestor is waiting for grandma inside."

The mother said this and lifted the curtain to let Song Wanning walk into the house.

Song Wanning responded and walked into the inner room, where she saw the old lady sitting on the chair in the center, resting her head on a soft golden pillow and holding grapes that were unavailable at the time of year.

Song Wanning knew why the old lady had called her here, it was just about the old lady's grandson Wen Tingbai. But the old ancestor was so carefree now that she even wanted to take care of her dowry.

Song Wanning wanted to laugh in her heart, but her expression remained unchanged. She walked straight forward and bowed to the old lady sitting above her. "Granddaughter-in-law greets the old ancestor. I pay my respects to the old ancestor."

The old lady glanced at Song Wanning, swallowed a grape, and said coldly, "You yourself are dressed brightly."

Song Wanning didn't get angry after hearing this, she just smiled and said, "What the old ancestor said is true, it's just that when the granddaughter-in-law goes out, she represents the dignity of the Marquis's mansion, so she really dare not not dress herself up."

"You represent the face of the Marquis' Mansion, and your husband Tingbai represents the dignity of the Marquis' Mansion even more." The old lady said, stretching out her palm and slapping it on the table. A loud bang echoed in Rongfu Hall.

"As Tingbai's wife, it's not enough that you can't win your husband's heart, you should also advise him from time to time and prevent him from making mistakes." The old lady now insisted that it was Song Wanning's fault that Wen Tingbai took a concubine. "You can't do anything now, and you can't help your husband with the aftermath. You can't help his career in any way. Instead, you ruin his reputation. What daughter-in-law would treat you like this? Tell me."

"My granddaughter-in-law knows she is dull and cannot do what the old ancestor wants." Song Wanning bowed to the old lady again, "My granddaughter-in-law will definitely reflect on her mistakes at home."

Seeing Song Wanning's refusal to budge, the old lady's expression grew increasingly grim. She angrily exclaimed, "Look at you! You couldn't help Bo Ge'er with his career, and you couldn't even offer him financial support. Now that he's in jail, instead of helping him, you're lending him money at interest. How could you be such a good wife in this world?"

Before Song Wanning could say anything, the old lady continued to scold her, "You are living a life of luxury now, while Tingbai is starving every day in order to save money to pay off his debts. How could he have a daughter-in-law as evil-hearted as you? He is so unlucky to have married you."

"How could that be, old ancestor?" Song Wanning feigned ignorance. "This entire mansion has its allotment of clothing and food. Although our mansion is not as wealthy as the royal family, our allotment is no less than what we have. As the eldest son of the family, Tingbai is always well-fed and clothed. How could he be short of food and clothing?"

"You..." When the old lady heard Song Wanning say this, she only focused on the interest and looked at Song Wanning and said, "Then why do you lend him interest?"

"Grandfather, this really can't be blamed on my granddaughter-in-law. She hasn't saved much money over the years. The money she gave to Tingbai to pay off his debts was her dowry." Song Wanning looked at the old lady and sighed repeatedly, "Grandfather, you really don't know. I really had no choice but to do this. Firstly, Tingbai, as the legitimate son of the Marquis's mansion, embezzled his wife's dowry to pay off his debts. It would be shameful if the news got out. Although Tingbai is poorer now, no one knows that he took my dowry. He just tells everyone that he borrowed it from outside and has to pay it back every month. That makes sense. Secondly, my daughter-in-law's father is coming home soon. If he comes back and finds that Tingbai has used up all the dowry, I'm afraid he will be angry."

"Now I just ask Tingbai to give me money every month to make up for the dowry, so that I can explain it to my father when I see him." Song Wanning said with a faint smile, "Grandpa said that the grandson's wife's thoughts are always reasonable?"

"You are always right, and you don't know how to be flexible." Seeing that she couldn't win the argument with Song Wanning, the old lady had to wave her hand and support her head and said, "Go out, there are too many people in this room, and I feel dizzy."

Song Wanning said yes and turned to leave Rongfu Hall.

When the old lady saw Song Wanning leave, she just snorted, "This granddaughter-in-law is getting more and more sharp-tongued. She doesn't know how to help Bai'er, nor does she know how to persuade Bai'er. She can't have children, and now she's even lending interest to her husband."

The nanny who had been with the old lady for decades saw that her grandson's daughter-in-law was not well-received and immediately offered advice, "Grandfather, Song Wanning is ungrateful. Her family doesn't like her either, and her father and brother are in the frontier and we don't know if they'll ever come back. She won't help Bo Ge'er's career either. What's the point of keeping a daughter-in-law like her?"

The old lady opened her eyes and looked at her nanny, then asked slowly, "What do you mean?"

The old nanny's eyes rolled around, "Grandfather, why don't you divorce her and marry another girl from a famous family to Bo'er? That will also be beneficial to his career."

The old lady's headache grew worse as she thought about this. She looked at the nanny beside her and said, "Don't you know that now, not only Bo'er, but even the other unmarried sisters and brothers in our family can't find a suitable marriage. This great marriage has been ruined by a trick."

Song Wanning, who had just returned to Lan Courtyard, asked about the Rouge Shop's business as usual, "Cai Que, how's the business in the shop these days? Is it under control?"

Cai Que heard the news and reported to Song Wanning, "Grandma, I checked the account book early. The rouge shop has started to make a profit. I'm afraid we'll be able to earn back our investment soon."

Song Wanning nodded and looked at Caique and said, "Now that this rouge shop has started to make money, we can't just rely on this one shop to make money. Wait a few days and find an opportunity to go out and ask what the capital city needs. We should also open other shops to continue our business."

Zhuque, who was standing by, heard what Song Wanning said and quickly stepped forward to remind her, "Grandma, you haven't even visited the farms and shops in your dowry."

"I'll go check it out when I get a chance." Song Wanning smiled faintly after hearing this. "When my father and brother come back, I should give them a surprise."

Just as Song Wanning was thinking, the little maid outside the door hurried in and said to her, "Grandma, someone is looking for you outside. They said there's a letter for you."

"A letter?" Song Wanning stood up from her chair in surprise.

She had lost contact with the Song family and had no brothers or sisters in the capital. The only people who could send her letters were probably her father and brother, who were still stationed at the border.
