Chapter 36 Return

Ever since the Marquis of Zhongping learned of Song Wanning's father and brother's impending return, they've been having more reunion dinners than usual. Every now and then, they'd invite Song Wanning over for a reunion dinner, and the main topic of discussion around the table was Song Wanning's father and brother, the mighty General Song Jing and the promising young Major General Song Lan.

Mrs. Wang, the wife of the second house, asked directly about the return of Song Wanning's father and brother. "Wanning, I heard that my in-laws will be arriving in a few days?"

Song Wanning wondered what this family was planning, and replied with a faint smile, "I guess they'll arrive in the next few days, but no one has come to inform us, so I don't know when they'll arrive."

The Second Wife's smile remained unchanged as she scolded, "This relative hasn't been home for ages. Now that he's finally back, shouldn't Wan Ning go to the city gate to welcome the general? After all, you and your daughter haven't seen each other for ages."

"We don't know when my father and brother will return. If I wait at the city gate, I'm afraid my wait will be in vain. Secondly, if I wait too long, my father and brother will be heartbroken when they return." Song Wanning ate her rice peacefully without raising her eyelids. "In my opinion, there's no need to go to welcome them. When they arrive, my father and brother will naturally send someone to inform us."

"How can this be possible? How can we wait even a moment for our loved ones to meet?" Madame Wang, realizing she had a plan in mind, immediately said, "Wan Ning, don't worry about waiting too long. Just send a few servants to watch the city gates. If they see the general's men from afar, they can report back. Then, Wan Ning and Tingbai can ride in a carriage together to greet the general. He can then see how happy you two are, and reassure him."

Song Wanning sneered in her heart, but still raised her eyes and said, "Now that my father and brother's days are uncertain, Second Master has to go to court every day. How can he accompany me to welcome my father and brother?"

"This is easy. It's not surprising that the son-in-law takes a few days off to welcome the general back." The second wife was determined to have Song Wanning bring Wen Tingbai to show up, fearing that Wen Tingbai would not please his father-in-law.

Song Wanning knew about this family's scheming, so how could she let them succeed? "Father has never asked for leave in his life. If he knew what Second Master did, I'm afraid he would be unhappy."

After hearing this, Mrs. Wang felt that her idea was not very reliable. She smiled and said, "Wan Ning is right. Then we should wait until the general returns. Tingbai and Wan Ning will come to visit together."

Wan Ning didn't want to listen to Madam Wang's nagging anymore, so she agreed, "That's right, Madam."

Seeing that Song Wanning agreed, the whole family breathed a sigh of relief and happily started to eat.

Song Wanning knew that Song Jing and Song Lan were not the type to show off, and their return to the capital would be a quiet affair. As far as she knew, their father and brother's return was only three days away. Naturally, she wouldn't share her thoughts with the family.

Song Wanning finished her reunion dinner and went to the courtyard feeling uneasy. Who would have thought that her mother would come to the gatehouse a moment later and said, "Grandma Bai, there's someone at the door looking for you. Can you go and check on them?"

"Someone? Who?" Song Wanning was puzzled, secretly wondering if it was Yi Chen.

"Two men wearing bamboo hats refused to tell us where they came from when asked, and only said they were looking for grandma." Seeing that Song Wanning was still lost in thought, the concierge mother said, "If grandma doesn't want to go, then this old servant will go to the door and send those two men away."

"Wait, I'll go out and take a look." Song Wanning's heart was in her throat. She had a guess in her mind but felt it was impossible. However, she still ran out of the Marquis' Mansion quickly.

Two tall, burly men stood at the door. Even in casual clothes, it was clear they were not ordinary people. Both wore bamboo hats, obscuring their features.

Song Wanning only needed to take a glance to know that the two people in front of her were the father and brother she had been thinking about day and night.

Song Wanning ran out impatiently, shouting loudly, "Daddy, Big Brother."

The two men outside looked up at Song Wanning, only to see her sprinting towards them like a cat. Song Jing chuckled, "Run slower. Daddy and Big Brother won't disappear."

Song Lan, who was next to Song Jing, also laughed and said, "My sister is still as active as she was when she was little."

Song Wanning looked at her father and brother, whom she missed day and night, and finally couldn't hold back her tears. She felt something was wrong, took out a handkerchief and wiped the tears from the corners of her eyes, and smiled, "Shouldn't they arrive in a few days? How can they come back so early?"

Seeing Song Wanning crying, Song Lan smiled and said, "Little girl, you know how to cry now that you've grown up. It's because your father is worried about you that he found two fast horses and went back to Beijing first."

"It's good that you're back, it's good that you're back." After hearing this, Song Wanning's tears flowed more uncontrollably. Her eyes fell on Song Jing and Song Lan's faces, and she murmured, "Daddy's hair has turned white, and big brother has grown taller and darker."

"Don't cry, little crybaby. Daddy is in his prime now. It's okay for your big brother to be a real man and have some dark spots." Song Lan patted his chest and said with a smile, "If not, how can big brother make achievements outside?"

After hearing what Song Lan said, Song Wanning finally felt relieved.

Song Wanning still remembered her past life, when Song Jing and Song Lan were plotted against by their henchmen and died in Huizhou. After hearing the news, she lost all desire to fight in the Marquis's mansion. Later, when she fell ill, she refused treatment and watched helplessly as her power as housekeeper was gradually taken away by Cui Xiaoxiao.

Now that her father and brother were standing here safely, Song Wanning felt as if she were still in a dream.

Song Wanning glanced back. Although this was the side entrance of the Marquisate, many people were coming and going. Song Wanning simply said, "It's not appropriate to talk here. Wanning invites father and brother to Tianxiang Tower for a delicious meal to welcome us."

Song Lan has always been free and unrestrained. After hearing what Song Wanning said, he chuckled and said, "That's perfect. I'm going to make a killing on you. You haven't had a full meal all the way because you were in such a hurry."

After hearing what Song Lan said, Song Jing exposed him without hesitation, "Your eldest brother is talking nonsense. On the way back, he bought ten pancakes, and seven of them went into his stomach."

Song Lan didn't feel ashamed after hearing this, and said shamelessly, "Dad, you don't even give your son any face. Your son is still growing and will get hungry soon."

Song Jing rolled his eyes at Song Jing, but with a smile on his face, "Slippery."

Song Wanning was amused by the old man and the child. She pulled Song Lan's sleeve and walked towards Tianxianglou. "Don't worry, eat as much as you want. I guarantee you'll have enough."

As the three of them left, Xiao Si at the door looked at each other and said to the other, "It seems that the general has returned early. Go in and tell the master and the mistress."

After hearing what was said, Xiao Si quickly went into the Marquis' Mansion to report.
