Upon hearing this, Chen Zhixian suddenly raised her head, staring intently at Feng Cui, her hands tightly gripping the clothes at her sides.
Meeting that resentful gaze, Feng Cui laughed even more heartily, and said with even greater sarcasm, "Our Consort Li is worried that you, Miao Liu, are still tainted with the Sixth Princess's bad luck, and is eager to help cleanse yourself of it!"
“Yingying has been dead for three years! How could she still cause the Fourth Princess to make a mistake in front of the Emperor?” Chen Zhixian, who was usually mild-mannered, rarely argued with anyone with red eyes.
Seeing that Chen Zhixian dared to talk back, Feng Cui's expression suddenly turned ferocious. She raised her hand and slapped her, shouting, "What our Consort Li says is none of your business! You just listen to her, who gave you the right to talk back?!"
"Nian Nian!"
As Chen Zhixian watched Feng Cui's raised hand fall, she couldn't care less about anything else. Almost instinctively, she pulled the little baby in front of her to protect him and curled up with her head down.
"ah--!"
The next moment, instead of the expected burning pain on her face, she heard a scream in her ear.
Immediately afterwards, her swaying body fell into a strong, warm embrace.
Chen Zhixian was stunned. When she looked up, she met a deep gaze, and her heart skipped a beat.
With a "boom," her head was filled with smoke, her mind clouded and her senses clouded. The flush on her cheeks stood out starkly against her pale, almost transparent skin.
Feng Cui, who had been thrown out, cried out in pain, clutching her wrist, her eyes blazing with sinister rage. But when she looked up and saw who it was, all the color drained from her face, and she cried out in terror, "Your Majesty?! This servant kowtows to Your Majesty!"
Emperor Chongjin frowned as he looked at the unpleasant face of the little woman in his arms. Anger surged within him instantly. He swept his sharp gaze toward Feng Cui and coldly ordered, "You lowly slave who assassinated me, drag her away!"
"No, no, no! This servant did not intend to assassinate Your Majesty! This servant, this servant would not dare! This servant is innocent..."
Upon hearing Emperor Chongjin's words, Feng Cui immediately lost her previous arrogance and kowtowed repeatedly, crying out for justice. However, she was immediately gagged and dragged away by a eunuch in front of the emperor.
"Why did it take you so long, Godfather! You didn't even stop Auntie from being bullied! Godfather is a bad guy too! Niannian doesn't like Godfather anymore!" The little dumpling looked at Chong Jindi and shouted angrily and fiercely, her sulking little voice even carrying a crying tone.
It was only then that Chen Zhixian finally reacted. She hurriedly struggled out of Emperor Chongjin's arms, holding the little baby, and staggered a couple of steps before managing to stand up. She bowed her head and said, "Your Majesty, I pay my respects."
Emperor Chongjin looked at the little boy's angry and resentful eyes, then at Chen Zhixian's pale face, her fearful and respectful attitude, and the way she held the little boy tightly. He pursed his thin lips and quickly helped Chen Zhixian up.
"My beloved consort, please get up," Emperor Chongjin said after a moment of silence, then sighed and said in a low voice, "These past years... I've wronged you."
Chen Zhixian raised her head blankly, staring at Emperor Chongjin, unable to react for a moment—the Emperor was…apologizing to her?!
The little boy pouted, complaining, "Godfather's apology wasn't sincere at all! Even if Auntie has a good temper and will forgive you, you can't be so perfunctory! My mother said that a man who's a jerk can't push his luck!"
Hearing the little boy's words, Chen Zhixian was suddenly jolted awake and quickly reached out to cover his strange and frightening little mouth.
