The Empress Dowager smiled even more lovingly, hugging her precious little baby tightly in her arms before she could even look down and carefully examine the flower basket the baby had given her.
Upon seeing this, a look of genuine amazement flashed in his eyes.
The little girl nestled in the Empress Dowager's arms and explained to her in a sweet, childlike voice:
"These are the flowers that Niannian picked, and the flower basket was woven by her godmother! Niannian picked so many flowers that the vase couldn't hold them all, so her godmother wove a flower basket for her! And the flowers on the basket were all chosen by Niannian, and her godmother wove them in!"
She had no doubt that the little baby chose it for her himself. After all, apart from this pure and adorable little baby, no one else in the palace would give her such a wildflower that didn't even have a name.
However, within the deep palace, such pure intentions, untainted by calculations or self-interest, are the rarest of all.
The Empress Dowager's eyes sparkled with joy as she hugged the cuddly little baby, her heart filled with gratitude. "Thank you, Niannian! Grandma loves it! There are so many flowers! Niannian must have spent a long time picking them. Did you put all of these flowers here?"
The Empress Dowager looked at the small flower basket with surprise and delight. She really liked it, not just the sentiment behind it.
Although they were just ordinary wildflowers and common vines, when put together, they looked surprisingly beautiful to someone like her who was used to seeing all sorts of precious and delicate flowers in the palace. It wouldn't be an exaggeration to say that they were fresh and refined!
Sure enough, the little boy replied cheerfully, "No, Niannian couldn't fit it all in, so godmother helped Niannian stuff it all in!"
The little boy was very honest. The Empress Dowager laughed when she heard the wording. She said that although the flowers were not hard to see, the fact that they could be arranged in such an elegant and bright way must mean that they had been carefully arranged.
The Empress Dowager raised an eyebrow slightly, holding the little baby and whispering in her ear, "Is the godmother Niannian talking about Aunt Chen from Xihe Palace?"
The little boy loved whispering in the ear of the gentle beauty. He giggled happily, snuggled up to her, and nestled against his grandmother, replying obediently, "Mmm! It's Mother Chen!"
As she spoke, the little boy whispered in her great-grandmother's ear, as if showing off a treasure, "Great-Grandma, my godmother is so amazing! She can grow flowers! She can make pretty flowery clothes! And she can also..."
The Empress Dowager chuckled at the little boy's adoring tone, not paying attention to his form of address. Instead, she smiled and nodded in agreement with him, saying meaningfully, "Hmm, it seems that Niannian's godmother is quite a remarkable person."
Few of the concubines in the imperial harem knew how to "plant flowers," "weave flower baskets," or "make flower clothes."
It has to be said that although Chen Zhixian didn't even show her face, just the little baby had already earned her a lot of goodwill from the Empress Dowager!
He Wan echoed her sentiment.
The Empress Dowager's gaze fell on the pleasing flower basket in front of her. The more she looked at it, the more beautiful it seemed. Among all the extravagant items, it possessed a unique clean and elegant charm.
"He Wan, put this in the inner room for me. I want to look at it more often while it's still beautiful these days," the Empress Dowager instructed with a beaming smile.
He Wan smiled and accepted the flower basket. Just then, the Empress Dowager, who had been laughing happily, suddenly snorted coldly.
Just as He Wan was wondering, she saw the Empress Dowager holding the little baby, gently stroking her cheek, and coldly snorting:
"So we still need to raise a little cotton-padded jacket. What use are those brats? I raised them all these years, and they've never once given me a flower to admire. Instead, they just send these scoundrels to my face, all they do is cause me trouble!"
Upon entering the room, Emperor Chongjin was met with disdain from his own mother. He smiled helplessly and awkwardly touched his nose.
