"Smack—!"
A crisp sound rang out, so clear that it silenced the entire residential compound for a moment.
Everyone was stunned.
Li Hongxia covered her burning face, completely stunned by the slap. She stared at Wen Yuzhen in disbelief: "You...you old hag, how dare you hit me?!"
"That's exactly what I'm going to do!" Wen Yuzhen's eyes blazed with fury, like an enraged lioness, and she slapped him again with her backhand!
"Smack!"
"This slap was for my daughter-in-law!" Wen Yuzhen pointed at Li Hongxia's nose and shouted angrily, "You gossipy bastard! You do nothing all day but stare at other people's private affairs! My daughter-in-law is pregnant with twins, and the doctor said she needs to rest. I, as her mother-in-law, came from my hometown to take care of her. I'm happy to do so! What's it to you? Are you stirring up trouble here because you're jealous that my Linchuan became a battalion commander, or because you're jealous that I, this old woman, am good to my daughter-in-law?"
Li Hongxia was thoroughly berated, clutching her swollen cheeks, both angry and anxious: "I...I didn't say that! You're slandering me!"
"Didn't you say so?" Wen Yuzhen sneered, glancing around at the military wives watching the commotion. "All the sisters here heard it! You called my daughter-in-law an empress dowager and me a maid! Let me tell you, Li Hongxia, the fact that I treat my daughter-in-law so well is a blessing for the Lu family! She's carrying twins, the offspring of the Lu family! Even if I treat her like an ancestor, that's my family's business! Who are you, an outsider, to interfere and spread rumors?"
These words were forceful and resounding, a thoroughly satisfying and scathing rebuke.
The military wives around them looked at each other, and many of them showed expressions of guilt and embarrassment.
Just then, a thin old woman rushed out of the house; she was Li Hongxia's mother-in-law.
"What are you doing! What are you doing! Are you trying to kill me?!" As soon as she saw her daughter-in-law being beaten, she immediately tried to throw a tantrum.
Before she could speak, Wen Yuzhen turned her fire on her.
"Mother-in-law, you've come at the perfect time!" Wen Yuzhen stepped forward, her imposing manner in no way inferior. "I want to ask you, how did you raise your daughter-in-law? Instead of staying home to be a good wife and mother, she's like a spineless fly, spreading rumors and causing trouble everywhere! Today she dares to spread rumors about me and my daughter-in-law, damaging our mother-in-law/daughter-in-law relationship. Tomorrow, will she dare to spread rumors about the military region leaders, disrupting the unity of military families? A daughter-in-law like you, if you don't discipline her properly, are you just staying at home to prepare for the New Year?!"
When the accusation of "undermining the unity of military families" was slapped on Li Hongxia's mother-in-law, her face turned pale.
In the military, this is a serious crime!
Seeing the strange looks from those around her, she felt utterly humiliated. Determined to distance herself, she turned and grabbed Li Hongxia's hair, slapping her repeatedly with both hands.
"You jinx! You troublemaker! I'll beat you to death today, you disgraceful wretch! I'll teach you to spout nonsense outside! I'll teach you to ruin our family's reputation!"
The scene instantly descended into chaos.
Li Hongxia's cries and her mother-in-law's curses mingled together, creating a complete farce.
Wen Yuzhen watched coldly, and when everyone's attention was focused on her again, she cleared her throat, and with all her might, announced loudly to everyone in the residential compound:
"I'm making this clear today! Su Wantang is the daughter-in-law I, Wen Yuzhen, have chosen; she's the apple of my eye! She gave me a grandson, so it's only natural that I serve her! I'm happy to do her laundry and cook for her; I'm happy to treat her like my own daughter! If anyone dares to gossip about her behind my back or say a single bad word about her, don't blame me for turning on them!" (This chapter has been read.
