Blood.
"Ah..." A dissonant, trembling gasp escaped her throat.
"What's wrong, Wan Tang?!" Wen Yuzhen was washing dishes in the kitchen when she heard the noise. The spatula fell to the ground with a clatter. She rushed out without even wiping her hands.
She immediately noticed the glaring red stain on Su Wantang's pants.
Wen Yuzhen's weathered face instantly lost all color.
But the panic lasted only a second.
The next moment, she rushed to Su Wantang's side in three steps, grabbed her cold arm, and spoke urgently and loudly, with an undeniable calmness.
"You're spotting! She's going into labor! Don't be afraid, Wan Tang, don't be afraid! This is a good thing! The baby is coming out!"
Su Wantang's lips trembled so much she couldn't speak. She gripped Wen Yuzhen's arm tightly, her nails digging almost into her flesh, her eyes filled with overwhelming fear.
Is she about to give birth?
But... isn't there still more than half a month until the due date?
"Mom...I'm scared...of blood..." Her voice broke, trembling with sobs.
"Don't be afraid! Mom's here!" Wen Yuzhen patted her back, like comforting a frightened child. "Giving birth is like this, it's a sign! Quick, sit down and don't move!"
She helped Su Wantang to sit down in a chair, and then moved about like a gust of wind.
"Water! We need to boil water!" She rushed into the kitchen, filled the largest kettle with water, and put it on the stove.
Then he rushed into the bedroom and dragged out a large, bulging cloth bag that he had prepared beforehand from under the bed.
"Lin Chuan! We have to get Lin Chuan back right away!" Wen Yuzhen muttered to herself, turning to run outside.
"Mom!" Su Wantang called out to her, as another wave of intense contractions hit, causing her to curl up in pain, cold sweat streaming down her temples. "It hurts...it hurts so much..."
"Oh, my darling!" Wen Yuzhen immediately ran back, squatted down in front of her, and wiped her sweat with her rough hands. "It's okay if it hurts! How can the baby come out if it doesn't hurt! Just bear with it, Mom will go and call someone right away!"
She ran to the door, flung it open, and shouted with all her might towards the yard, "Help! Guards! Xiao Zhang! Go quickly and call Battalion Commander Lu back from the regiment! His wife is about to give birth!!"
The shrill shouts shattered the morning tranquility of the residential compound.
Li Hongxia, who lived diagonally across the street, had just come out carrying a washbasin when she heard the shout. Her hand trembled, and the water in the basin spilled all over the floor.
Is she about to give birth?
Is that pampered young lady, Su Wantang, about to give birth?
Wen Yuzhen had no time to pay attention to the commotion outside. She ran back into the house, took out a clean cotton cloth and a thick cotton pad from her bag and placed them under Su Wantang, then took a thick cotton coat and draped it over her.
“Wantang, listen to Mom,” she cupped Su Wantang’s face, forcing her to look at her, “Don’t panic now. Learn from Mom, inhale… exhale… yes, take it slowly… when the contractions come, just breathe like this, it will make you feel better.”
Su Wantang's consciousness was in turmoil from the waves of excruciating pain. She could only instinctively follow Wen Yuzhen's instructions, gasping for breath.
A few minutes later, the sound of a Jeep braking suddenly could be heard outside the yard.
The car door was pushed open with a bang, and Lu Linchuan's tall figure rushed in. His military cap was askew, and his face showed unprecedented panic and paleness.
"Wantang!"
He rushed to Su Wantang and saw her pained face and the glaring marks on her body. His heart felt like it was being squeezed by a giant hand, and the pain made his vision go black.
