"Oh my, Wan Tang, congratulations! You've really made us proud, having both a son and a daughter all at once!"
"Let us see the child! I heard he's exceptionally handsome!"
Wen Yuzhen happily brought the two little ones out to show everyone.
A gasp of amazement immediately rose from the crowd.
"My goodness, is this really a newborn baby? It doesn't have any wrinkles at all!"
"Yes, look at this little face, so fair and tender, like a peeled egg. When our baby was first born, he looked like a little old man."
"Such a straight nose and such a small mouth, she'll be a heartthrob when she grows up!"
Li Hongxia was also squeezed into the crowd, carrying a small bag of red dates in her hand, her smile somewhat stiff. She pushed her way to the front, peeked out, and that sour feeling in her heart started to rise again.
Those two children were undeniably beautiful. The older brother had his eyes closed, his long eyelashes like two tiny brushes, while the younger sister had her eyes open, her large, dark eyes curiously surveying her surroundings, as clear as two pools of spring water. Moreover, both children were exceptionally well-behaved; even with so many people watching, they didn't cry or fuss.
Looking at Su Wantang, although she had just given birth, she looked radiant. Leaning against the headboard, her eyes shone with gentle warmth. Lu Linchuan stayed by her side, tucking her in and handing her water; his attentive care was obvious to everyone. Her mother-in-law, Wen Yuzhen, was beaming, her mouth agape, accepting every compliment with more joy than if she were the one being praised.
This family is like someone from a magazine, so perfect it makes you envious.
Someone nudged Li Hongxia's arm and whispered, "Hongxia, didn't you say before... that her mother-in-law treated her badly?"
Li Hongxia's face flushed red and then turned pale.
The words she had spread earlier now felt like a silent slap in the face. What daughter-in-law, "tortured" by others, could have such a radiant complexion? What mother-in-law, "worked like a slave," could have such a genuine smile?
"I...I must have misread it," Li Hongxia stammered, placing the red dates on the bedside table. "Wantang, take good care of yourself."
After saying that, she slunk out of the crowd.
The women chatted and laughed for a while longer before tactfully taking their leave, letting the new mother rest well.
The ward fell silent again.
Looking at the mountain of gifts piled up on her bedside table, Su Wantang felt a warm glow in her heart. These simple military wives, though occasionally gossipy, were mostly kind-hearted.
The hospital was quiet at night.
The two little ones were surprisingly easy to take care of; they would eat and sleep, and eat again after waking up, rarely crying. Except for waking up twice at night to feed them, Su Wantang slept through the night the rest of the time.
Lu Linchuan was worried, so he set up a small bed next to her and kept watch. When Su Wantang woke up in the middle of the night, she would always see him lying on his side, watching her and the child without moving, his eyes focused and gentle, using the dim light coming in from the corridor.
A week later, Su Wantang was discharged from the hospital.
It was early morning, and the sea breeze was still a bit chilly. Lu Linchuan took one of his military overcoats and wrapped Su Wantang up from head to toe, leaving only her eyes exposed.
"I'm not made of paper." Su Wantang was both amused and exasperated by his words.
"No, you can't be exposed to drafts during your postpartum period." Lu Linchuan's face was serious, leaving no room for discussion. He bent down, picked her up horizontally, and steadily walked towards the jeep at the hospital entrance.
Wen Yuzhen, carrying two swaddled babies in each arm with practiced ease, followed behind, muttering, "Walk slowly, don't let them bounce."
The sunlight was perfect, shining brightly on the family of four. (This chapter has been finished. Please click to continue reading the next chapter!)
