Sun Xiulian lowered her voice even further, almost whispering.
"Yesterday afternoon, thinking she was feeling unwell, I brought her two eggs. I had just gotten to her window when, guess what I heard?"
Her eyes were blazing with anger: "That wicked mother-in-law of hers, she stood in the house with her hands on her hips like a supervisor, cursing! She called her a barren hen, and if she did manage to lay an egg, it was a useless little girl, a money-losing burden! The words she uttered were simply inhuman!"
Wen Yuzhen gasped in shock and stopped knitting.
Su Wantang's face also darkened.
"She's only been out of confinement for a few days, and her body is still weak. Her mother-in-law made her get out of bed to wash clothes! The water was so cold! And she made her kneel on the floor to wipe the floor! She said, 'Mom, I don't have the strength,' and guess what her mother-in-law did?" Sun Xiulian's lips trembled with anger. "She slapped her across the face! She called her a lazybones, born to serve others, and still wanted to be a pampered city lady!"
"My God!" Wen Yuzhen exclaimed, standing up in shock. "This is a terrible thing! How could someone in their postpartum period do that! It will cause lasting health problems that will never heal!"
Su Wantang's heart tightened instantly.
No wonder.
No wonder Liu Fen had such severe breast engorgement!
Exposure to cold, overexertion, and emotional distress during the postpartum period are all direct causes of acute mastitis!
That day, she only saw the illness, but not the root cause, which turned out to be such a wicked mother-in-law!
"Where is her man? Doesn't he care?" Su Wantang's fingers, gripping the soup bowl tightly, turned slightly white from the force.
“Manage?” Sun Xiulian gave a bitter laugh, a laugh more painful than a cry. “Her husband is in the reconnaissance company, and he’s away from home for one or two months at a time when he’s on a mission. All his salary and allowances go to his mother. How would he know what kind of life his wife is living at home!”
"What about the money?" Su Wantang pressed.
"Money?" Sun Xiulian's tone was full of disdain. "Her mother-in-law is as cunning as a monkey! She doesn't give her eldest son's allowance a single penny to his wife; she keeps it all and sends it to subsidize her lazy younger son! Her brother-in-law's family of three is supported by the money her husband earns while working in the army! If she wants to buy her child a piece of cloth to make new clothes, she has to be mindful of her mother-in-law's attitude!"
The air in the room seemed to freeze.
A man works hard to protect his country, but his own mother uses the money she earns to support another son's family, while his wife and children are treated like livestock at home.
This is absolutely the most absurd and chilling thing in the world!
"When she first married into the family, she was so pretty, fair-skinned, and always smiling." Sun Xiulian looked out the window, her eyes somewhat unfocused. "But look at her now, what has she become? She looks older than those of us who have had two kids. This life is unbearable..."
Wen Yuzhen listened, wiping away tears, repeatedly muttering, "Poor child... such a poor child..."
Su Wantang couldn't say a word.
Her mind was filled with the image of Liu Fen when she came to her for help that day: her flushed face, her chapped lips, and her eyes filled with despair and fear.
She thought that by inserting a silver needle, she had saved her.
But now she realizes that it was just a temporary pull out of one fire pit, and in the blink of an eye, she was pushed into another, deeper, colder hell.
That home was not a haven for her, but a cage. That mother-in-law was not a relative, but a bloodsucking demon.
Looking at Su Wantang's unpleasant expression, Sun Xiulian hesitated for a moment, then gritted her teeth and leaned forward, her voice trembling uncontrollably.
"Wan Tang, I...I heard something even more frightening..." (This chapter has been read. Please click to continue reading the next chapter!)
