"Where's the child? Let me see." Wen Yuzhen looked around.
Granny Li's eyes darted around: "She's...she's sleeping in the next room, don't wake her up."
"Take me to see him/her. It's not a good thing that the baby isn't nursing." Wen Yuzhen stood up, her tone leaving no room for refusal.
“This…” Granny Li was clearly flustered. “She’s really sleeping. Please come back another day.”
Liu Fen also sensed that something was wrong. She broke free from Granny Li's hand and staggered to her feet.
"Mom, where is my daughter? I need to see her!"
“She’s sleeping in the next room, what’s the rush?” Granny Li’s voice rose eight octaves.
Liu Fen rushed into the next room without a care, with Su Wantang following closely behind. The room was empty; there was no sign of the child.
"Nannan! Where is Nannan?!" Liu Fen's voice became shrill, filled with a desperate tremor.
She rushed back into the main room and grabbed Granny Li's arm tightly: "Where's my daughter? Where did you take my daughter?!"
Granny Li was hurt by the grab and shoved her away: "Are you crazy? She's just a good-for-nothing, why are you getting so worked up?"
"What?!" Liu Fen stared wide-eyed at her mother-in-law in disbelief. "What did you say?!"
"What's wrong with telling the truth?" Granny Li simply laid her cards on the table, hands on her hips, looking completely self-righteous. "She's just a little girl, what will she do when she grows up and gets married anyway? She'll just be a waste of our family's food supply!"
"What...what did you do to her?" Liu Fen's voice trembled violently.
"He gave her away, what else could it be?" Old Mrs. Li curled her lip. "There's a businessman in the city whose wife couldn't have children, so he paid fifty yuan to raise a baby girl. Fifty yuan! That's enough to buy so many nice things for our family!"
"Bang!" Liu Fen staggered backward and fell to the ground with a thud, her face deathly pale.
"You...you sold my daughter?!" Her voice was broken, like a tattered piece of cloth.
"What do you mean by selling? That's called giving them away! They're rich and powerful, much better off than us!" Old Mrs. Li showed no remorse whatsoever, and instead became more and more self-righteous as she spoke. "You should take advantage of your youth and hurry up and have another son! What use is a daughter?"
Liu Fen struggled to stand up, but her body was too weak, and she could only kneel on the ground, tears streaming down her face like broken beads.
"Give her back...give me back my daughter..." she cried, her voice breaking with anguish. "That's my child, my own flesh and blood..."
"What are you crying for?" Granny Li waved her hand impatiently. "It's all been given away, how can you expect it back? You should take good care of yourself and give me a big, healthy son next year, that's better than anything else!"
Wen Yuzhen, watching from the side, was furious. She knelt down and helped the limp Liu Fen to her feet: "Where did you take the child?"
"What's it to you?" Granny Li rolled her eyes at her. "It's none of your business how our family affairs are handled."
“Liu Fen is a patient my daughter-in-law saved, so her child is naturally my concern as well.” Wen Yuzhen stood up, her face extremely pale. “The child is still breastfeeding, and something will happen if he leaves his mother.”
"What happened? That family is rich, why would they be afraid of not being able to raise a child?" Granny Li said nonchalantly.
"What do you know?" Wen Yuzhen suppressed her anger. "Newborns without breast milk will have very weak immune systems and are prone to illness. Besides, Liu Fen currently has plenty of milk; suddenly weaning her will cause mastitis!"
Granny Li sneered, "That's none of my business! The child has already been given away anyway!" (This chapter has been completed. Please click to continue reading the next chapter!)
