Wen Yuzhen became increasingly angry as she spoke, pounding her fists on the table with a loud "bang bang".
Su Wantang listened quietly, her expression gradually darkening. Her hand, resting on the edge of the cradle, unconsciously tightened.
Fifty yuan.
A life is worth only fifty dollars.
She could imagine the despair Liu Fen must be feeling. A mother who risked her life to give birth to a child, only to have it sold off like merchandise by her own relatives in the blink of an eye—this kind of pain was like having her heart ripped out.
"Mom, don't be angry." Su Wantang's voice was very calm. At this time, getting angry won't solve anything. "You can't reason with that kind of person."
"What can we do? Just watch that child get sold? If Liu Fen wakes up, she'll go crazy!" Wen Yuzhen was frantic.
Su Wantang's gaze fell on the window. The family compound was quiet, and the sunlight shone on the snow, making it somewhat dazzling. She was silent for a few seconds, then turned to look at Wen Yuzhen.
"Mom, we can't handle this. We need to find someone who can."
"Who? Who are you looking for?"
"Sister Zhao from the Political Commissar's family," Su Wantang said slowly, "Sister Zhao Jing."
Wen Yuzhen was stunned for a moment, then her eyes lit up.
Yes, Zhao Jing!
Everyone in the family compound knew that Political Commissar Zhou Haiping was henpecked; his wife, Zhao Jing, made all the decisions, big and small, at home. Zhao Jing herself was a straightforward person with high prestige among military wives. As the head of the military dependents' committee, she couldn't stand such sordid affairs.
"I'll go right now!" Wen Yuzhen slapped her thigh, stood up, and walked out. This matter needed someone to step forward and uphold justice.
Zhao Jing's house wasn't far, just in the front row. Wen Yuzhen, preoccupied with her own thoughts, walked quickly, still breathless when she reached the door. She straightened her clothes and knocked.
The door opened quickly, and Zhao Jing peeked out. She was somewhat surprised to see Wen Yuzhen, and quickly smiled and ushered her in, saying, "It's Wen Yuzhen! Come in quickly, it's cold outside."
"Sister Zhao, I...I came to tell you something." Wen Yuzhen entered the house, not even bothering to drink water, and went straight to the point, telling you the whole story about Liu Fen's family.
She spoke quickly and urgently, talking about how Granny Li sold her own granddaughter for fifty yuan, how Liu Fen fainted from anger, and how the newborn baby girl might never come back. Wen Yuzhen's eyes reddened.
The smile on Zhao Jing's face gradually disappeared as she listened.
At first, she was surprised, then solemn, and finally, her face was so dark it could drip water.
"Are you telling the truth? Li Guilan really sold her own granddaughter?" Zhao Jing's voice was tinged with coldness.
“It’s absolutely true! I heard it with my own ears!” Wen Yuzhen assured her urgently, “Liu Fen is still lying unconscious on the ground in her house, and that old hag isn’t even going to take care of her!”
Zhao Jing slammed the knitting needles in her hand onto the table with a "bang".
"This is outrageous!" She stood up abruptly, her face contorted with rage. "This isn't just a simple family dispute; this is human trafficking! It's a crime! For something like this to happen in our military compound is a disgrace to our entire unit!" (This chapter has been read. Please click to continue reading the next chapter!)
