“That old woman is really ruthless.” She said while applying medicine to Liu Fen. “Look at these injuries, they’re all evidence. If you really get a divorce, these will be solid proof of her abuse of you.”
Liu Fen looked down at her legs; the crisscrossing red welts burned with pain from the medicine. But for some reason, this pain brought her a sense of clarity.
"Dr. Su, can I really learn it?" Her voice was very soft, as if she were asking Su Wantang, or perhaps asking herself.
“Of course you can.” Su Wantang finished bandaging her wound and looked up at her. “You’ve even survived childbirth, what can’t you learn? Besides, taking care of children is a woman’s nature. You just need to turn that nature into a skill.”
Liu Fen nodded, the despair in her eyes gradually being replaced by something called hope.
"When should I start learning?"
“We’ll start once your fever breaks and your injuries heal a bit. But before that, you have to talk to your man first.” Su Wantang’s expression turned serious again. “This can’t be delayed. The longer you delay, the less courage you’ll have.”
Liu Fen bit her lip: "What if he doesn't agree to me learning these things?"
“That only proves he’s not a good man.” Su Wantang said without looking up as she packed her medicine kit. “Liu Fen, you need to understand one thing: a man who truly loves you won’t stop you from becoming a better person. He will support you and encourage you, instead of trying to keep you at home like a slave.”
These words made Liu Fen fall into deep thought. She recalled that when she was newly married, she had thought about learning something, but every time she brought it up, she was either scolded by her mother-in-law for being "restless" or by her husband for "making a fuss over nothing." Over time, she dared not think about it anymore.
“I understand.” She took a deep breath, her eyes filled with an unprecedented determination. “I will talk to him properly.”
Su Wantang nodded in satisfaction: "That's right. Remember, you're not begging for his charity; you're fighting for a better future for yourself and your child."
The sound of a child crying came from outside the door again, this time even more urgent. Liu Fen couldn't sit still any longer and struggled to get up.
"I have to go back, Nannan is hungry..."
"Wait a minute." Su Wantang took out a small porcelain bottle. "This is a medicinal ointment I made myself, specifically for treating external injuries. Apply it once every night before bed, and it will heal quickly. Remember, whatever you do, don't let that old woman find out."
Liu Fen took the medicine bottle and held it tightly in her hand. The warmth emanating from the small porcelain bottle warmed her cold heart a little.
"Dr. Su, thank you..." Her voice choked with emotion, "I really don't know what I would have done without you."
"Don't thank me, thank yourself." Su Wantang helped her stand up. "You chose to be strong and chose to live for your child."
Liu Fen nodded and limped out. When she reached the door, she suddenly turned back.
“Dr. Su, if I really learn it and can support myself and my daughter with it, I will definitely leave him.”
Her voice wasn't loud, but it carried a resolute determination, like burning one's bridges.
Watching her retreating figure, Su Wantang felt both relieved and worried. She knew the real test had only just begun. (This chapter has been read. Please click to continue reading the next chapter!)
