His wife can only be his.
The soldiers jolted and immediately looked away, but couldn't help sneaking glances out of the corner of their eyes.
One of the bolder ones, as Lu Linchuan approached, finally mustered up the courage and, blushing, called out in Su Wantang's direction, "Hello, sister-in-law!"
The sound was like pressing a switch.
"Hello, sister-in-law!"
"Hello, sister-in-law!"
Greetings rang out one after another, carrying the shyness and awkwardness unique to young soldiers.
Su Wantang smiled and nodded gently at them.
That laugh left the group of boys completely bewildered, unsure of what to do with their hands and feet.
Lu Linchuan's expression remained unchanged, but he tightened his grip on Su Wantang's hand and led her straight inside.
The women in the compound had already heard the commotion and were peeking out of their houses or stopping what they were doing in the yard.
"Have you heard?! Commander Lu has brought his wife to our island!"
"So fast?! Come on, let's go take a look!"
"I want to see what kind of woman can make our Commander Lu so obsessed!"
"Me too! I want to see what kind of woman can win over our Commander Lu!"
The women in the family compound held hands excitedly and walked quickly toward the gate of the military family compound.
Not only the family members, but also all the female soldiers in the cultural troupe were very curious about who this Commander Lu's wife was. After hearing the news, everyone flocked to the gate of the compound.
Gradually, everyone arrived, and they all craned their necks, curiously looking towards the doorway.
When they saw Su Wantang's appearance clearly, the entire courtyard seemed to fall silent for a moment.
Shock was the common expression on all the women's faces.
They had imagined that Commander Lu's wife might be pretty or quiet, but they never expected her to be like this... beautiful.
She was so beautiful that it made these women, who were constantly exposed to the sea breeze and scorching sun, feel an indescribable sense of inferiority and jealousy.
"My God, is this Commander Lu's wife? She looks like a movie star!" A woman who was hanging clothes to dry stopped and whispered to the person next to her.
"My goodness! She's even prettier than a movie star! Her skin is so smooth you could squeeze water out of it!"
"Who says otherwise? We're both women, but the difference is just so huge! Look at her and then look at me, I feel so ashamed to show my face! Putting aside our looks, our skin is like night and day!"
"People from the city, how can they not be precious? Look at her skin, so tender, like a peeled egg! I bet even the pearls at the bottom of the sea don't have skin as good as hers. If we were to get sunburned here, wouldn't our skin peel off?" Another woman curled her lip, her tone sour.
"Exactly, she looks like a pampered young lady. Can she handle the work here?"
"She's the daughter of a capitalist, she lives a life of luxury, with all the best food, things, and clothes. How could she not be beautiful?!"
The murmurs were like buzzing mosquitoes and flies.
Su Wantang wasn't deaf, but she simply followed Lu Linchuan's steps without looking to the side, her back ramrod straight.
Despite being a newcomer, she showed none of the timidity or unease typical of a new bride. Her composure only made the prying eyes of the others more complicated.
In the courtyard, a military wife named Li Hongxia withdrew her gaze, spat at the woman next to her, and spoke in a voice that was neither too loud nor too soft, just loud enough for people nearby to hear.
"Hmph, look at her pampered attitude! Does she really think she's a fairy who stepped out of a painting? This island is stormy and rough; it's not a place to keep a canary in a cage.
