Su Wantang, dressed in a brand-new deep red dress, sat in the front row. She felt somewhat awkward, surrounded by military leaders, mayors, and provincial governors—all important figures she had only ever seen in newspapers before.
The spotlight shone on her, and it was a little too bright.
"Now, let's give a warm round of applause to our great hero, the most beautiful military spouse—Comrade Su Wantang, to come to the stage to speak!"
Applause erupted like a tidal wave.
Su Wantang took a deep breath, stood up, and walked to the podium. She saw Lu Linchuan in the audience, dressed in a crisp military uniform, sitting in the first row, looking at her. In his eyes was a light she had never seen before, a light mixed with pride and love.
Speaking clearly into the microphone, she said, "I'm not a hero, I just did what I was supposed to do..."
The flashbulbs kept going off, capturing the moment.
The next day, her huge photo was featured on the front page of every newspaper in the city.
The headline is eye-catching and sensational: "One person saves a city: the selfless dedication of Su Wantang, the most beautiful military wife."
Su Wantang became a household name.
Walking through the courtyard, everyone looked at her with admiration and gratitude.
Su Wantang stepped down from the podium, and Lu Linchuan strode up to her. He didn't say anything, but simply held her hand tightly, his palm burning hot, the force so great it felt like he was about to crush her bones.
Outside the Great Hall of the People, the sun was shining brightly.
The women swarmed around Su Wantang, surrounding her completely.
"Little Su, you're truly a living saint in our compound!" Sister Wang, the wife of Battalion Commander Zhang, held Su Wantang's other hand, her face beaming with smiles. "If it weren't for you, we don't know when Old Zhang's leg would have fully recovered!"
"That's right! My son was saying just the other day that Aunt Su is a fairy descended from heaven!"
"Wantang, your dress is so beautiful! Where did you buy it? Look at the fabric!"
The chattering praises, mixed with good-natured jokes and affectionate tugs of the hand, almost overwhelmed Su Wan. She felt a little uncomfortable with the enthusiasm, and responded with a shy smile.
Lu Linchuan stood like a guardian deity, silently protecting her in his arms, separating her from the overly enthusiastic crowd, his eyes filled with indulgence and pride.
Just a few steps away from the crowd.
Li Hongxia stared intently at Su Wantang, who was being fawned over by everyone, her nails digging deep into her palms.
On what grounds?
Why does she get all the good things?
It was just good luck; she knew a few folk remedies, and now she's become some kind of savior. Looking at her sisters-in-law, who usually ignored her, now fawning over Su Wantang like lapdogs, Li Hongxia felt a wave of nausea wash over her.
That red dress stung her eyes.
She also had one, but the material wasn't as good as Su Wantang's. She had saved up for several months to buy it, and she treasured it, rarely wearing it. But how come it looked so good on Su Wantang?
