Chapter 76 Jealousy at Work (3/3)

"Jianguo, look how thin you've become! Does this woman even know how to take care of people?"

Her gaze swept over Li Hongxia like a knife, finally settling on her flat stomach, a look of disdain playing on her lips.

"After raising it for so many years, it can't even lay an egg. What a useless thing!"

Upon hearing this, Zhao Jianguo's face fell: "Mom, what nonsense are you talking about!"

"I'm talking nonsense? What nonsense did I say?" The old lady's voice immediately rose. "Our Zhao family has only had one son for three generations, and we can't let it end in your hands! Let me tell you, Li Hongxia, if you can't get pregnant this year, you'd better go back to your parents' home and stop occupying the position without doing anything!"

From that day on, Li Hongxia's life completely descended into hell.

Her mother-in-law finds ways to torment her every day, complaining that the floor isn't clean enough or that the dishes are too salty. She dumps all the housework on her, while she sits with her legs crossed, munching on sunflower seeds, and bossing her around.

Caught in the middle, Zhao Jianguo was in a dilemma. At first, he would say a few words in his mother's defense, but later he was exhausted by her crying, making a scene, and threatening suicide. So he simply went to the army to avoid seeing her.

Li Hongxia was so tired every day that she couldn't straighten her back, and she also had to endure her mother-in-law's sharp and mean curses.

More than once, she listened to the faint laughter coming from Su Wantang's house next door late at night and silently shed tears.

Why are their fates so different?

Two months passed in the blink of an eye.

Su Wantang's belly had visibly swelled up, like a small hill.

She was suffering from severe morning sickness, vomiting everything she ate, and had lost a lot of weight. Lu Linchuan saw this and was very worried.

He took care of almost all the housework and cooked different dishes for her every day. He would be happy for half a day if she ate just one more bite.

That afternoon, Su Wantang was taking a nap in a recliner when Lu Linchuan carefully walked over with a bowl of freshly cooked fish soup.

He first placed a soft pillow behind her to make her more comfortable before bringing the bowl to her lips.

"Come on, have a taste. I specially asked Old Zhang from the cookhouse to get some fresh crucian carp. I stewed it for three hours without adding anything else, just some ginger slices to remove the fishy smell."

He gently blew on the spoon before feeding it to her.

Su Wantang took a sip, and the delicious flavor spread across her taste buds, and her stomach didn't churn, which was rare.

"It's delicious." She smiled at him.

Lu Linchuan looked as if he had received a great reward, his eyes lit up, and he fed her the whole bowl of soup spoonful by spoonful.

“After the baby is born, I’ll take a vacation and take you to the capital.” He wiped her mouth with a towel while planning for the future, “I’ll take you to eat Peking duck, go shopping in Wangfujing, and make up for everything I haven’t given you before.”

Su Wantang leaned against him, listening to his gentle whispers, her heart filled with sweetness.

This is what peaceful and serene times are all about. (You have finished reading this chapter. Please click to continue reading the next chapter!)
